They only had 3 4 packs left so I went all in and grabbed them all. And I'm glad I did cause it's phenomenal!

All this helles love I gotta grab some now. I like the original so I figured it was pointless to try the helles, I now realize typing this how not smart my thinking was.

I would be interested in hearing your thoughts about this new Helles from Weihenstephan. Maybe in a NBW post?

A BA posted previously in this thread:

"Flavor profile is dialed back considerably, they weren’t kidding when they said “easy drinker” with a “light body”."

I would be interested to see if you think the same here. If so, this is a non-purchase for me.

    Cheers!

I was planning to :beers: if I can find the time to get out and grab some. Found another relatively fresh import that I’m excited to drink to but I’ll gladly add the helles if I can.

Spoiler alert - I will be discussing Remastered Boston Lager tomorrow in NBW.

    Cheers!

At 11.1% plato and 4.8% abv, and 16 IBUs, it's like a modern German pilsner with half the bittering. They emphasize the flavor of the Saphir and Select (Spalter?) hops in the marketing. Maybe the hops are slightly more aromatic than a typical helles these days to give it a more modern taste? It's clear that they are aiming for a lighter bodied Helles. Perhaps they have found that a significant enough portion of younger people have a distaste for the bitterness of the modern German pilsner, while also feeling that the typical Helles is too heavy for them. By keeping the body of a modern pilsner while reducing the bitterness they can cater to those consumers, and potentially add a bit of brightness with some hop flavor and aroma. All of it tied together with a retro 50cl Euroflasche.

And "modern German pilsner" is a 'ghost' of what a German Pilsner should be IMO.

Another reason to not buy this 'new' Helles from Weihenstephan.

    Cheers!

But it isn't a German Pilsner and doesn't claim to be, from what I've read. Helles are malty alternatives to spicy hoppy Pilsners. That's the beauty of it.

Yes, but as discussed in this thread by a number of BAs this 'new' Helles from Weihenstephan is a 'watered down' version of a Helles. Weihenstephan Original is a Helles and I do enjoy drinking that beer if I can find it fresh. What is the 'benefit' of drinking another beer from Weihenstephan that is a 'lesser' version of Original? Have you tasted this new beer from Weihenstephan? If so, what are your thoughts? How would you compare it to Original?

    Cheers!

    Taste outstanding?

You bought it and I thought you may have reported your opinion in this thread -- or a review.

I find this one less hoppy than the Original that I had in 2006 but it has a similar strong malty profile, imho, and fits the style more accurately.

Less hoppy watered down to me. Shrugs

Yes, to me it does taste outstanding. That's why I mentioned it in the thread aboot the last malty beer you had that impressed you.

Permit me to suggest a side-by-side tasting of the 'new' Helles with an Original of similar age. This may (or may not?) formulate a better assessment for you.

    Cheers!

Don't give me ideas . D'oh! Too late.

I want to do that, but none of the new helles has showed up. (yet?)
Here in Bingladesh a lot of things are late, or not at all . Might show up past the BB date , so......next January? :stuck_out_tongue:

I just checked my review of their Pils. Perhaps it and their Original Helles had too much in common and they wanted to create a larger difference? Conjecture on my part.
