Closing out an incredibly special week/weekend with this beer. It has been sitting around for far too long in my fridge and I’ve slowly drank down all my barrel beers. This is one of the few remaining...I kept holding onto it to share cause I hate these big bottles. No way I even come close to finishing it but hey it’s better than wasting away in my fridge any longer.

kane - a night to end all dawn with coffee, vanilla and coconut (2019?)

Poured black and slow surprising initial head for a 12% barrel beer but it faded quick. Now left with a nice ring of creamy light brown froth.

Smell to me most prominently is chocolate brownie like aromas, some vanilla, bourbon and wood.

Taste is noticeably different from the aroma because the first thing I noticed was a subtle coconut flavor. Vanilla is still there but I do not really get coffee or it’s coming off as chocolate now cause of the age.

Mouthfeel is full and creamy but in no way thick. It goes down pretty smooth and the hey is minimal. The carbonation is a little prickly. The beer finish is long and lasting with the brownie like chocolate taste.

Overall a nice beer to sit and sip on tonight. This week was super busy but in the best way possible lots of grateful feelings tonight. I’ll savor this beer as I smile on the closing of a great week. I hope everyone else had a great week and wish everyone well this week. Until next time...

Regarding that blue label, that beer used to have a brown label. I assumed that the St Bernardus beer’s current name was patterned after Westmalle - but I really don’t know (I’d like to find out). It’s nice to see your posts here.

Here's another new and very interesting offering from
Upper Pass Brewing Company, Tunbridge, VT.

    16 oz. can.
    Canned last week.

Moderate pour yields one inch white head over a murky golden body with some lacing. Nose of lemon, lime, and orange with a hint of spice. Taste of citrus, spice, and slight pine. Very refreshing with a nice smooth finish. Nice feel and overall, a very unique offering from Tunbridge, Vermont and would recommend for anyone to check out this rye IPA!
    Cheers!!

Not old at all. Hell I hold on to some stouts for years. Like I said it was pretty good, just felt thinner than expected. Still, I appreciate the chance at trying it.

Old trading partner out of IN, he has always been great with sending fun one offs and barrel aged stuff along with a yearly bottle of Dark Lord.

Second to last new beer of the evening. This is Finback's Money's Spent, a DIPA featuring Citra and Nelson. High hopes for this one. 8.5% ABV, canned on 4/1/21.

Pours like a normal Finback NEIPA, of course. They have this down to a fairly-exacting science at this point which makes sense considering this is like the three-hundredth beer they've made in this style. I mean, look at the picture. Hazy orange, solid head, good lace. Not gonna complain, though, because Citra and Nelson is a great combo.

Nose is also as expected. So far, this is shaping up to be pretty much the beer you think of when you think of "strong hazy Citra/Nelson IPA," and I'm here for that. Dankness, cantaloupe, tangerine, guava-like cattiness, white wine minerality, some oat-driven maltiness, and hop candy in the back. Not much else, but it doesn't need any more than that to be honest.

Drinks nice and well-rounded, with lots of fresh mango and guava flavors bookended by dankness and light floral notes. A touch of Nelson-driven acidity with some honeydew melon/cantaloupe, grassy undertones, and a slightly-lingering bitterness in the finish. Balanced feel with some slight doughiness tempered by adequate, prickly carbonation. Definitely one of the better Finback DIPAs in recent memory for me.

Okay, one more big boy coming up before I retire for the night.

Great write up Jay. The diesel you mentions is very interesting. Now I want to hunt down another can and give it another shot. I didn't write it up, but I remember experiencing it like you, roasted nuts and sweet in the nose, and awash in coconut, nuts and caramelized bliss.

Yes, but it's not easy to find. It's listed with the nutritional information (8.0% ABV).

I am bummed that I missed the 2020, but I did a side by side with fresh 2019 and a can of 2018. Even in the fresh can the herbs/spices added aren’t very noticeable outside of just some earthiness. The guys at Tired Hands might not like make stout, but Gatherer and the Only Voids are great stouts.

Hit my 1st new beer of today, and it's probably not shocking, for those keeping score, that it comes from that magnificent maniac known as @JayORear:

Seems like a lot of folks have had something that sounds very similar to this beer but logged it as a DDH version of Punge, whereas this can label definitely declares it to be a TDH beer, so I took the liberty of placing it on the database as such. Anyway, whatever it is, it's a tremendous beer, and went way too quickly.

Cloudy lemon yellow 1/2 inch quickly dissipating soapy head little lacing, partial cap.

Taste is orange and passion fruit with hints of orange rind
Mouthfeel is smooth with a little carbonation on the tongue finishes dry and tart. Very light
Overall it’s a really nice cloudy IPA, I had a hard time drinking it slow. It’s really easy drinking, good one!

    Time for my Sunday Stout-
This came courtesy of @Mbgreg and the amazing boxes he sent me in BIF 13.
Whale’s Blood, a collaborative beer brewed by The Eighth State and The Whale and Mellinial Coffee.
An Imperial Stout with multiple varieties of vanilla beans and coffee. New beer and new brewery. What do we get-
Poured like cold coffee with about as much head. Huh, not inspiring.
The aroma did have some vanilla and coffee and cocoa, maybe, but it’s very faint. Am I expecting too much?
Then I taste it, yowsa, that is good. It hides its amazing flavors well from my other senses. I have to re-read the bottle as I have the impression it’s BBA- but it isn’t. Or at least doesn’t say it is. The coffee and vanilla blend in a way I’ve never tasted before and the stout is big enough to carry them both. So tasty.
The feel is ideal for the style, slowed me down just a little.
OA, well nuts, it’s gone. This is definitely one I would stock in my cellar, thanks Mark, for sending this my way and letting me try it!

I couldn´t help it and I am drinking a St. Bernardus Extra 4 as I write. And have to backdown the boldened assertion above a bit, as this is also a phenomenal little beer in the very same mold as the Westmalle, but still with discernible differences. Let me get this right in the side by side thread at some point, and enjoy those two enkels left for now. And sorry about the actual mindfuck between the different pale blue Extras.

*Extra 4 has fantastic looks usually, and this particular serving doesn´t make it justice. Pretty badass in the noble hoppy camp also imo, at least from a monk view...

    16.9 oz bottle.
    Bottled in Dec., 2020.

Moderate pour yields a thin white head over a slightly hazy golden body with little to no lacing but nonstop bubbles keeping the thin head intact. Subdued nose of wine with hints of grass/straw. Taste of grape, but the feel is very similar to champagne and the bubbles keep coming with a swirl or two bringing back a 1/4 inch head. Yet another unique, envelope-pushing Vermont offering.
Nice job and Cheers to the ZG team!!!
