hotel booked, staying at the hampton inn downtown. still undecided on dinner restaurant. black birch sounds amazing but scared of the no reservations thing. we did a night in portland a couple years ago with no reservations and wound up getting shut out of every decent restaurant we tried. like actually being told we will not have a table for you before we close. I'm also more concerned with having an awesome meal (not necessarily fancy) than with a great beer selection. but i think i'm down to down to black birch, cure, the wilder, and goat for dinner. maybe popovers, friendly toast, or goat for breakfast the next day.

yelp cant give me this kind of service. lol, we should start a new website called "ask a local" for tailored recommendations.

Maybe I'm older than I thought, but the few times I spent at D Street in the early 2000s were awesome. Granted, it's been a LONG time since I went out drinking in town.

I am right there with you. Some of the best nights in my 20s in the early 2000s were spent closing down the Daniel Street Tavern ("D Street") on a Sunday night after some aggressive karaoke. That said, it is the dive bar of dive bars in Portsmouth.

    What about Lexis Joint?

Also, no one mentioned the lobster roll at Row 34.

I’ll 27th Black Birch. If you get there right at open you should be ok.

And @Jcorn I know you want to keep it walkable, but When Pigs Fly could also be an option.

Love Anju - the pork bun and a subby is one killer Wallingford square combo. Not sure if the Dram is open yet - but with the addition of Corner Pub to the line up - you’ve got four great spots within 50 feet of each other. Kittery Foreside rocks.

Someone mentioned it before but Mr Kim’s is making some of the best food in the area. It would be my second choice after the Birch.

Worth a quick addition that even though the mask mandate for the state was lifted, Portsmouth still has their mandate in place through June 30th at least.

I don’t give a fuck what your stance is but the business here (especially breweries) will reject you without one. So just keep them on, it’s not very hard or painful. This is just to be informative.

I have to wear one all day (some days 10-11 hours nearly straight except for eating/drinking), I forget I even have it on.

    It's not that bad honestly.

The uproar over the mandate removal is bewildering. Lots of people are big mad at Sununu, but I don't think people actually understand what he said. Like, nothing's really changed, except you don't have the NH government telling you what to do. I thought that was a good thing? Restaurants, stores etc. all have the right to require one, and if you don't like it, don't go in. Or be a gigantic **** about it, film yourself and put it online and do bad Yelp reviews.

    Dumbest time to be alive....

But seriously, have fun in Portsmouth OP!

Agreed, if my close to 6 year old can do it and not complain a grown adult should find it a breeze. Moving on to beer talk!

I can get behind this. If you're pro-mask still, you can go to places that enforce it.

NH has never been strict with the Covid rules, as you said, this doesn't really change much. And they're doing a great job vaccinating.

Gotta agree here. You haven’t done Portsmouth until you’ve crushed a few Jimmy Juices and a fisherman’s platter at Old Ferry Landing on a beautiful summer day.

Agree 100%. A Jimmy Juice (or two) on a nice Sunday summer afternoon was a great pre-game to late night karaoke and crushing PBRs at D Street. Don't get more than two Jimmy Juices though....they are sneaky good!!

For black birch, when you say het there at open, does that mean like 4pm? Lol. I’m turning 40 but I’m not early bird special old. Haha.

I am! Odds are you’ll still have to wait, and you can drink some Bissell on draft while waiting.

Or head to the Dram while waiting and have an awesome cocktail or Substance on tap.

I haven’t been yet since reopening after winter. But the draft selection varies now as it does at many places since covid. Still solid but Bissell is not always a guarantee at any of the foreside spots (birch, dram or anju)) Hopefully this has changed in the last few weeks but during the fall it was very hit or miss. Just for reference on subby
