Pretty sure they have to have a sell by date on them by law here.

I doubt it's lactobacillus, or, ta least, originally wasn't as it was quite respectably hopped. And the sourness only appeared during the ageing process.

I don't recall ever detecting sourness in Stiegl's beers.

I looked back at my reviews of the Stiegl Gold and Pilsner and see no sourness noted.

You had yours on tap? I have to suspect the draft lines at the establishment. I used to frequent a place where I was the first draw of their beers that day (German imports) -- I learned to have them draw a full beer before mine, and that didn't always work.

I’ve seen this is Wegmans. I assumed it was going to be brown and all that stuff but I’m mistaken by the name. I should try it soon.

Ha. Ron, I know for a fact that you've tried Jan Kemker Aoltbier - his rather good (far better than Pinkus) take on a Munstersch Alt. Even more, he's located in Munster too. So it's the real deal. It's a fantastic beer, resembling a more lactic Giradin Lambiek usually matured for 8-12 months on barrels if not mistaken.

I have not had the pleasure of drinking Jan Kemker Aoltbier but it sure looks tasty!

I suspect this beer does not make it to US but if I ever see one I will purchase a bottle. I appreciate that there is dating on the front label is readable font.

    Cheers!

What do you consider a type I?
A long time ago I tried samples of a bunch of Monarchy of Musselland beers alongside Sebastian Sauer talking about them. I tried that Münster Alt but don't remember a thing about it (besides enjoying it). He also had Methusalem, which was their Dortmunder Altbier (aka Adambier) - a strong, sour beer. US labels for both of those beers marketed them as "sour Altbiers."

Regarding color: Jack, you can see pictures of Munchhausen in the glass on Untappd. Pinkus calls the style of their Altbier a "Helles Münstersches Altbier." They have proudly declared that they make the only golden Altbier in the world... and that the beer dates back to 1816. You gotta wonder if the color of that beer was really golden in 1816 though.
