By making your logo indistinguishable from the dozens of new breweries with equally "modern" designs? The Classic logo jumps better when compared to all the cartoon labels. having another cartoon label does not make a brand stand out.

That logo above was on few, if any, actual packaging. AFAIK, Interurban still has the trolley. Just hit Google Images, and see how few of their packages actually have the the heron logo. This is just more visual jumble, that actually works counter to the proposed purpose.

Well, if I saw enough Odells to have an opinion.....

    I've like their brews though.

the brewery they are now is a fad-chasing production brewery. sorry, but just because Matt use to post here all the time doesn't mean we have to give them the benefit of the doubt every time. there buddy use to make the art when it was small enough to handle. they probably underpaid some artist to make this rebrand happen. it sucks, and their cans and packaging look like garbage. #sorrynotsorry

"Benefit of the doubt" because Matt used to post here?

With all due respect, I gave my opinion of their redesign (and my impression of the reasons behind it) based on my 20+ years in the graphic design industry, not as some Fremont fanboy/apologist.

with all due respect, you came to a thread about new branding and wound up defending fremont with a 500 word essay  sorry, but i'm not a fan and i think the beer and the art is boring.

on a totally unrelated note, pelican should update their can art to something more modern. just my opinion, based on nothing else and 0 years of graphic design experience

If they update it, someone will complain.

Wait. Why was Fremont wrong to rebrand but Pelican should? I may be drunk but I’m not following the logic.

Maybe we are just old "get off my lawn" types..and all the younger drinkers think we are wrong. Hmm
Judging by the amount of artsy( some that take me a minute of two to figure out who the brewer is and what is the beer type) and cartoon labels nowadays maybe our day has passed ?

This would be a good place to point out how glad I am that NW breweries are not (at least that I've noticed) doing that East Coast thing where the can art is so abstract you have to stare at it for 10 minutes just to figure out what the name of the beer is. There are some aisles at John's that give me a headache from just glancing at those beers.

Back on topic, Terminal Gravity could use an overhaul. I'm pretty sure Laurelwood is no different than when they started. Btw, for anyone feeling Laurelwood nostalgia, they've resurrected Hop Monkey and have it on draft now. I liked it a lot but there's no way it's the original recipe. The bitterness is not at '09 levels.

So many of Laurelwood’s recipes have huge drift from what they were when first released, a new logo or can art doesn’t quite cover it. Workhorse may have the same grain bill, but after all the hop bill and ABV changes, the current version doesn’t deserve to carry that brand name.

Indeed, Workhorse used to be my go-to. After my most recent 6 pack I resolved to leave it in the past. I'd forgotten that packaged Laurelwood is no longer brewed in-house.

So had I. Thanks for the reminder.

Are packaged Laurelwood beers still contract brewed by Ninkasi?

If I recall correctly, yes. For awhile I believe Full Sail was doing it? I could be wrong about that. Either way, it was not the beer I remember it being.

Yes, both are owned by Legacy. Laurelwood is now just a brand. Only the NE Portland pub is owned by the original owners.
