@Roguer ‘s review is not Ernest Hemingway in style but more akin to James Faulkner, “ it was a dark and stormy stout....”

[IMG] Poured into a 16 oz tulip glass not sure when it was canned. Pours a hazy yellow with a finger sticky white head that leaves thin lines of lace with solid retention. 4.25

Aroma is melon, lime, passionfruit, and apricot. 4.25

Taste follows honeydew, passionfruit, apricot, and a little hint of lime really well balanced. 4.25

Mouthfeel is medium, soft creamy gentle carbonation, not sticky or dry, and at 6% ABV it may drink a little bigger, but goes down really easy. 4.25

Overall this what I expect from them, never blown away but never disappointed. Recommend it for sure. 4.25

Good day BAs! For the NBS portion of NBW my New breakfast Beer:

DDH Pulp Daddy from Greater Good Imperial. Received on 9/4/21 from @Rub_This_BBQ in NBW BIF #13. 16 oz can stored upside-down at home at 42 degrees. Reviewed 18/4/21. Note that I use DD/MM/YY protocol.
Bottom of can stamped “CANNED ON 03/17/2021”. Served at 43.7 degrees in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. Final temperature 49.8 degrees.
    Appearance – 4.
First pour – Pale Straw (SRM 2), murky and nearly opaque. Unfiltered.
Body – Pale Straw (SRM 2), murky and opaque. When rear-lite, same.
Head – Large (Maximum six cm, aggressive center pour), white smoke, high density, average retention, diminishing to a nine to thirteen mm jagged crown and a thick partial cap. As the head collapses, extreme examples of torn curtain lacing remain above the crown. Second pour produces a high density 1.2 cm head.
Lacing – Good. Head retraction and volume reduction leaves wide three-dimensional bands of tiny to medium bubbles. See also above.
Aroma – 3.75 – Citrus, tending to sweetened grapefruit, and conifers, kind of weak. No malt, no yeast.
Flavor – 3.75 – Begins with some grapefruit-like citrus in the foreground but lacks the refreshingness of citrus. Mild resinousness, too weak for pine but still coniferous. No malt, no yeast. No alcohol (8 % ABV, as marked on container) taste or aroma. No gastric warming occurs. No dimethylsulfide or diacetyl.
Palate – 3.75 – Medium, approaching creamy, soft carbonation.
Final impression and summation: 3.75 Good for the style but generally weak for a DDH brew.
    Rating 3.77, rDev -10.9%.

Caught up with the thread. Three beers added to the "must find" list:
    • @eppCOS 's Half Acre Parrot of Paradise
    • @WunderLlama 's Central Waters Straight Outta Amherst &
    • @FBarber 's Goldfinger Bohemian Pilsner (also cool you shared Malort - Never seen Barrel Aged Maltort so now I have that on my radar.
WCIPAs, Lagers, Pilsners and traditional English Beers are not brewed well by many, but glad to see more brewers taking the leap, being BuckleDown with the English Mild or a new brewer dedicated to old school beers like Goldfinger, which is what I have planned for today.

Was disappointed Goldfinger's latest release, Maibock, was sold out day of drop at my local store, wanted to pick up for the Bock tasting next week. The Pils and Lager are still available, so I'll grab one of each to try within the next few weeks. @ovaltine (cues Fiona Apple inspired by his response) is mighty impressed as well, as have others in the Great Lakes thread. Today is the first in at least a few attempts to see whether the hype and quick sellouts are justified.

    Stay tuned.

Greetings, BA's! It's nice to see everyone's reviews and there are some really tasty offerings being consumed this weekend. I had a very late night on Friday celebrating the birthdays of two close friends. I got about three hours of sleep before being woken up to go on a birdwatching outing. It was something we had scheduled, but that didn't make waking up any easier. It was a very rewarding trip though, and we saw some incredible stuff. The first bird we saw was a bald eagle that soared above a creek we were walking beside. A few moments later we saw another adult perched in a tree directly across from where we were standing. It was a great way to kick off the outing, and helped wake me up. I have to say, ticking birds is starting to interest me almost as much as ticking beers. Any other birders in here? I anticipated having a few rounds yesterday to put an end to the day, but after chipping a tooth during lunch and taking a long nap the previous night's festivities caught up to me. I was able to squeeze one easy drinker in though, and it exceeded all expectations(spoiler alert). This one came to me from the very generous @Dimidiata in the recent and ongoing NBS BIF. She sent me so many incredible beers from world class breweries, but there were two cans specifically that I got really excited about. This is one of them - Moonlight Brewing's Reality Czeck Pilsner.

The pour was a beautifully transparent straw color with lively carbonation and topped with a fluffy white head that rose above the rip of the glass like a nimbus cloud of beer. The aroma displayed a nice grainy and bready character with some fresh cut grass. The first taste that I noticed was pale malt and doughy bread. The grassy and somewhat floral hops became more prominent as the liquid diminished. A nice crisp finish with some bitter hop notes brought it all together. The feel was on the lighter side with the carbonation keeping my palate alert and engaged. This is not a complicated beer, but rather a fantastic example of how wonderful simplicity can be.

    Thanks again, @Dimidiata!

Such a great beer. Have drunk countless pints at Toronado in SF, usually alternating with Pliny. Both beers flow copiously there.

I was lucky enough to have Toronado suggested to me last time I was in the Bay. That's my kind of bar. The bartender was surly and the taplist was incredible. I had my first taste of Alvarado Street there, and I believe followed it up with a Blind Pig.

Welcome one and all to New Beer Sunday #842! Have two Goldfinger beers on tap for today, my first stab at this Downers Grove brewery receiving all the hype and love, brewing styles that don't get as much hype as the usual suspects.

    Goldfinger Vienna-Style Lager

    Can Notes:
16 oz, canned 2/9/21 14:11, pour with a slight cap off into a large pilsner lager glass. Purchased shortly after release and refrigerated since my purchase. 5.5% ABV. Vienna-Style Lager: Doubledecoction (sic). Toasty. Malty. This naturally carbonated lager is rooted in family tradition. Brewed like our ancestors did in 19th century Krakow. Na Zdrowie!

Appearance: Clear caramel straw color, nice egg-white head formation lingers for a few minuets before leaving clumpy lacing in its wake. Steady carbonation throughout. 3.5

    Aroma:
Nice dark fruit and bread mix, raisins, dates, cinnamon, pumpernickel, medium in strength, enticing mix. 4.25

    Taste:
Similar in characteristics to the aroma, but lighter in strength. Spicy pumpernickel, light cinnamon and raisins. Roast malt dominates, sweet caramel and toffee, light hops presence leads some balance but this is a sweet beer. 3.5

    Mouthfeel:
Medium body, slightly creamy, light carbonation lasts throughout. Easy drinking, slightly dry, sweet overall. Caramel aftertaste lingers. 3.75

    Overall:
This is a good Vienna-Style Lager. I've only had a few of this style at this point, but it is similar to others I've tried. Sweet consistent with style, balancing hops lighter than expected. 3.5

I found my review of Dovetail's take and found my scores about .5 higher throughout, more earthy, grassy with pepper backing on Dovetail's take. Still anxious to try my second later today, and other offerings. Glad I ran into this brewer here and in the Great Lakes forum, encouraged that more brewers are pursuing these styles.

See you this afternoon to cap off the weekend!

oh damn, that meme hits home. :joy:

I did get Dovetail delivered this week too, though, so I guess you could say I'm in an open lager brewery relationship right now ... because if you haven't checked them out, but get the chance, Art History Brewing also should be on your radar for traditional English and German styles. They've been doing some great stuff.

Good morning NBS/NBW and thanks @ChicagoJ for the hosting this week.
Things are greening up here in WMass, with that amazing once a year "spring green" color in the trees. Todays offering is from Schilling Brewing in NH. A very good Dopplebock, that stays in its lane quite well. Excellent malt expression while avoiding all he traps os being too sweet, slick, tacky you know what I mean
    Cheers

    Brücius

Poured from a 16 oz can dated 03/04/21 so 5 weeks.
A - Beautiful mahagony with some ruby tone, Excellent clarity, Carbonation is steadily feeding a lasting tight knit froth of off white.
S - Caramel, sweet brown sugar, light roast coffee. There is a slight hint of smoked malts as well
T - Caramelized sugars, in a good way, again threads of toffee, brown sweet bread, a hint of molasses, and roast hazelnut.
M - Medium in body, with all that caramel in the prior catagories the offering starts on the sweet side but mid palate shifts toward the dryer side, with a very elegant finish. Carbonation helps move things along.
O - A very good offering from Schilling, avoids the sweet dark side quite well.
    A worthy domestic Dopplebock

Happy Sunday! It's cloudy and cool here, with a chance of rain. We certainly could use some rain.
Not much going on today, so I think I will drink beer and watch sports on TV.
My new beer for today is Maximus from Lagunitas, a modest 9% IPA.
A clear, amber colored beer. Modest off-white head that leaves a good deal of lace.
    Sweet malt and pine aroma.
    Lots of caramel, some pine.
    Malt-forward, late kiss of hops.

Hello again, NBWers, and here's today's entry.

Crooked Stave's New Beer New Me DDH pale ale. 3.5% (the DDH is Cashmere and El Dorado). It's better than an N/A beer, but not quite a pale. Pale session? Pale rider? You get the point.

    3.79/5 rDev 0%
    look: 4 | smell: 3.75 | taste: 3.75 | feel: 4 | overall: 3.75

L - Plays the junior murk session ale well. Appearance is convincing, nice head at first, little lacing.
S - Muted aromas here of some tropical bitters; nothing really distinct, good hop oil impression but something THIS light.
T - Muted again, can really tell it is a low ABV beer, but at least not a NA "wort rich" experience; actually tastes like a light pale ale, or session IPA. Yep, that's what this is. Cashmere (meh) and El Dorado (OK) provide the taste backbone here - a little grassy, a little woody.
F - Good carbonation, decent palate impact, no issues.
O - an interesting low calories session ale from CS - didn't pay attention (dammit) to the canning date. D'oh! This was already 3+ months old (canned 1.5.21) so that certainly plays a role for aroma/taste and the muted hops.

    Good morning NBW
I stopped to buy beer in Bloomington yesterday and purchased a four pack of Switchyard Brewing Company Orange Blossom Blonde out of curiosity. The brewery is in the same block as the store oddly enough.

16oz CANNED ON 03/08/21 poured into a tulip pint glass at fridge temp 4.7% ABV. The beer pours hefe-hazy in a peach tinted amber color. The head is nearly white in color and recedes to a thin ring and single layer of bubbles. The aroma is faint with grain, hints of sweet citrus and honey. The taste is semisweet grain with honey notes. There's a hint of tartness and sufficient balancing bitterness. The mouthfeel is thin bodied with just above average carbonation and a dry finish. Overall, good.

I had Super Mole, from Jack's Abby, for the first time last night. It definitely won't be the last time.

JA says Super Mole has "a silky smooth chocolatey mouth feel enhanced by the use of oats and brown sugar. Noticeable sweetness gets balanced by roasted malt and hop bitterness. Additional flavors include bourbon, vanilla, and oak." and they are not lying.

    4.19/5 rDev +0.5%
    look: 4.25 | smell: 4 | taste: 4.25 | feel: 4.25 | overall: 4.25
L: As black as the bottom of a well on a moonless night and a lovely foamy cocoa colored head that laces at it dissolves into a thick film

S: Bourbon, coffee, chocolate and mild spices

T: Bourbon is up front, followed by burnt coffee and toasted malts. This is backed up (in order) by chocolate, vanilla, cinnamon, and oak tannins; all on top of a pleasant mild chili pepper heat. I didn't notice any sugars.

F: thick and rich in the mouth and smooth across the tongue (likely thanks to the oats), leaving a very nice mild heat on the aftertaste.

O: an outstanding "Mexican" BBA Porter. The flavors are almost perfectly balanced. The only fault I had was that the bourbon was a little too strong and the vanilla was a little too weak, but that could be due to age. Thankfully JA decided not to go all out with the pepper. They struck the right balance of noticeable taste and warmth without turning it into a Porter flavored hot sauce.

Good Morning all! Getting some chores done around the house this morning, but had a few minutes to fit in a review of this one.

    Weihenstephaner - Helles

This is their new canned helles offering that only recently made its way stateside. Checks in at 4.8% ABV. The Weihenstephan website describes it as "quaffable and mild".

Pours a crystal clear bright golden color. Quite effervescent. Two to three finger bubbly, sudsy white head forms on the beer with a generic pour, lingers for a bit, then dissolves into a thin layer of velvety foam that lingers on the top of the beer. Aroma has notes of light, mildly sweet, bready malts. A touch of doughy yeastiness comes through on the nose with some light floral, herbal-ly hop notes comes through on the back end.

Taste has notes of sweet bready malts up front with a clean malt backbone as it goes across the palate. Because the malt backbone is very mild, the hops, are allowed to peep through and provide a really pleasant light bittering note on the back end. They contribute floral, lightly herbal and spicy flavors on the back end. Feel is light, crisp, and yes, quaffable. Bright, lively carbonation. Mildly drying on the finish.

They described this beer as "quaffable and mild" and frankly its a spot on description. At every turn, I kept thinking all the hallmarks of the helles style are just, just very mild. Its masterfully toes the balance of a lighter helles, without losing any of the flavor from the style. This beer is delicious and really enjoyable to drink. Its light, yet still flavorful - and I think this beer would have wide appeal. The question is, will this beer, an import, make its way to its targeted audience? Of that, I am skeptical. But, while its still here on shelves and fresh, I will happily drink this especially in the coming warmer months.
