On to #2, this beer will be cross posted to the Bock tasting thread. I can’t believe I’ve not had this, and am PUMPED to try it. Let’s get our bock on!!!

A delicate pour reveals a cloudy brown beer with a couple of fingers of light tan head that laces not even a little bit. The nose is banana bread, some clove, stone fruit, and a smidge of caramel. Wow.

The banana bread flavor is up front on the taste, and the clove has decided to amp up its game, taking a more prominent role on the taste. The stone fruit and caramel flavors are also present, making this a true hefe Doppelbock, with all the flavors complementing each other and making this 8.2% ABV beer dangerously drinkable.

The mouthfeel is very full, yet a bit “spritzy,” that perfectly balanced hefe/Doppelbock dance these weizenbock’s work toward. This one succeeds at a world-class level, IMHO.

    12 oz. bottle.
    Bottled 03.08.21.

Moderate pour yields a one inch light tan head over a red-tinted black body with sticky lacing. Nose of dark malt, dark fruit, booze, and hops. Taste is more of the same with the booze and hops taking the lead. Very nice and fairly smooth for an American Barleywine. Nice feel and overall, a great example of the style, well-made, and definitely recommend to all those seeking a strong beer.
    Cheers!!

New Beer Weekend turns 40 today! Cheers all around!

I may not be as active as normal this weekend (then again ....). This evening's first beer is Spiritual Needs, the final beer of this season's Cigar City El Catador club - my first, and likely only, year of membership (but only because I'm moving again; I'd totally run it back!).

Summary: if you're a big whiskey fan, and perhaps buckwheat (?), you'll probably love this one. I'd prefer a thicker, creamier, richer, and sweeter malt base, which is promised on the nose but doesn't quite deliver on the palate.

That's not, in any way, to suggest that this isn't made with the same care and attention to detail as most El Cat brews. It's really, really damn good, but it's not quite in my wheelhouse. I also have absolutely no clue what buckwheat is supposed to taste like, much less in a beer.

Due to an error on CC's part, I actually only got one bottle of this one, but gained an extra bottle of a release that I enjoyed more - so, hooray? I guess? Now I've got two more bottles of Journeywork of the Stars, which implies that someone is going to get surprised with a bottle sooner or later.

Eiche is one of my favorites (Urbock is probably #1, and Helles is up there), for the exact reason you mentioned: the marriage of the smoke and the dark, sweet malt base is perfect.

A hometown tick for my next entry, Frost from Structures. Listed as an "American Pale Ale", it even says so on the label, it's fully murky. I think we need an NEPA style category, there's no way this beer should be looked at in the same light as say Mirror Pond.

Ha! Funny enough, my partner ordered a funky saison earlier today, and the bartender (at the brewery) tried to steer her toward something a little more ... I don't know, girly, like a fruited kettle sour? Wrong move, brother. "Oh, no, I like funky!" That's my girl.

Jack, I can't wait to see NBW #4x with your side-by-side between Orval and your own Orval (Horzal? Horval? Orzempa? I'm spitballing here :grinning: ).

    As per can's label:
    "Shake Well and Pour Hard."

Shaking well and pouring hard yields a one (+) inch white head over a very bright, near transparent, light straw colored body with lacing. Nose of maple, vanilla, and Creemee Stand goodness! Tastes like I just had my first spoonful of a classic Vermont Maple Creemee! Nice feel and overall, I won't repeat what I just said. Search this out or wait 'til the Creemee Stands re-open for the summer!

Hi, ho NBWers. I'm owed so much vacation time it isn't even a joke. So I took the week off since it is April vacation and our anniversary is coming up (north of 35, south of 40 years). Spent a few days in Ogunquit, ME which was a surprisingly lively but well-behaved. Relaxing walking the Marginal Way, and we both totally unplugged from contact with work.

We got to Tully's and the beer lady was in. So we had two new brews during the week. Barreled Souls made both and I did review both Little Havana and Blame Canada. I was very surprised by Little Havana, and somewhat let down by Blame Canada much to my surprise.

We also revisited our old friend Curieux. We had it with to go lobster rolls; we had it with pseudo-charcuterie on the hotel deck... Every time I drink that beer I am reminded of how fantastic it really is.

Enough jibber jabber, what am I drinking now after a day with the grandson in the woods and garden...

Allagash From Maine With Love No 1. From the can "this wheat beer spent hindsight raspberries that had previously been used to age one of our wild beers. Using the fruit s second time is not only more sustainable, it adds layers of flavor that we couldnt get any other way... " It also states the series is based on employee ideas.

The pour is actually crystal clear....hmmmm...pink? Despite what it looks like in the glass that looked quite clean, it is a nice looking beer. Fizzy pinkish bubbles that do not last at all.

Straight up raspberry assault on the nose, then a wheat perks out, a bit of the funkiness, promise of acidity, tea, and something I can't put my finger on.

Bold raspberry taste and a sharp but not tooth-peeling acidic bite. Tangy wheat. A tea note I often find with fresh raspberry. Would not for a second believe these were recycled raspberries. And a layer of mild funk adds interest. Then there is...something else....I am guessing it is characteristics of whatever the fruit sat in before. I swear I can pick up salt.

This beer is light bodied, there is zero aftertaste beyond a mild tart sensation. Slightly drying, but not what I would call refreshing.

Liking it, but I don't find it terribly complex or layered in flavors. And I am fine with that. I think it is pretty straightforward, personally. I'm feeling 3.8 or so on the barometer of beer scores. Slightly strayed from the usual Allagash fold, but an enjoyable beverage.

    Ayinger - Celebrator

    Doppelbock from Germany (6.7%).

Pours a slightly cloudy, deep, dark mahogany coloration with a large, fluffy head. Smells of slightly roasted, bready, caramel malt, some dark fruit notes of fig, raisin and plum and lighter notes of chocolate, licorice and herbal hops.

Taste is a perfect, quite rich balance of slightly roasted, bready, caramel malt and bitter, herbal, spicy hops, with some quite rich dark fruit notes of fig, raisin and plum, distinct chocolate and lighter notes of brown sugar, coffee, licorice and peppery spice. Finishes dry and bitter, with a very light sweetness and some dark fruit, chocolate and licorice lingering in the aftertaste. Full, creamy mouthfeel with a rich body and light/medium carbonation.

So is Celebrator truly the king of Doppelbocks? In a word: yes! What I love about this the most is its somewhat dry and bitter character, being a lot less sweet than most Doppelbocks, with a bit more focus on the roasted rather than caramel malts as well. While there certainly is some caramel and brown sugar sweetness to this, as well as strong dark fruit and chocolate notes.

Although these are kept in check very nicely by some quite earthy, herbal hops and spice, with the licorice being particularly distinct here, while body and mouthfeel are outstanding as well. Overall, this is just a superbly rich, complex and full-bodied Doppelbock with an outstanding balance of sweet and bitter, earthy notes that's definitely not easy-drinking, but something to be savored.

After a busy Saturday we're settled in, watching a movie, and I'm sipping on this Imperial Stout from @Roguer's BIF box: Coco for Coxness from Copperpoint Brewing Co. in Boynton Beach, Florida.

It pours a deep walnut, approaching black, with a small, light mocha-colored head and thin, creamy film of lacing. The nose offers roasted malt, cocoa, and whiffs of freshly-brewed coffee, tobacco, and anise. While I didn't smell any coconut I can taste it, along with cocoa and burnt coffee grounds. As it warms there are increasing notes of vanilla and smoky char. There is only the slightest hint of bourbon. All of the flavors are delicate and they blend seamlessly. The mouth feel is creamy with moderate carbonation and the 9.2% ABV is not apparent. Overall, this is a delightful Imperial Stout. Thank you, Andrew!

Such a tiny, unknown Boynton Beach brewery, where every beer was "Ehh, this is OK," until that one. When my sister offered to hook me up with a couple of bottles, I leapt at the chance. Cheers!

    The review:
16oz can stamped 07/29/21 poured into mug at fridge temp, no ABV listed on can. The beer pours bright amber in color with off white head. The head recedes to a thin ring and single layer of bubbles. Good lacing. The aroma is grainy, with earthy & toasted malt notes. The taste is barely tart with toasted malt, corn and a quick, clean barely bitter finish. The mouthfeel is thin bodied with average carbonation and a dry finish. Very clean. Overall, good. Very bright and refreshing red lager.

    Cheers all!

Second - and last - New Beer this Saturday is Hubbard's Cave Triple IPA.

Hubbard's Cave (or Une Annee) releases a ton of single and imperial IPAs, including a series of single-hop offerings. This is the first official "Triple" IPA, labeled simply as such (not disclosing the hop profile, nor advertising as single hop), which is honestly surprising. Super fresh, canned this month.

Summary: this is darn good. I don't know the exact hop selection, but I'd be shocked if Citra or Mosaic wasn't at least part of it, and perhaps Amarillo or El Dorado.

Fitting with Hubbard's Cave, this isn't exactly a NE-IPA, despite being hazy. It's got enough bitterness, no doubt, and a good balance of malt sweetness and hop flavors. I'd rank the hop profile as citrus primary, herbal and dank secondary, and tropical tertiary ... but as I drink it, I start to second guess that order.

It almost ventures into the syrupy trap of old-school IIPAs, without quite reaching it, which is nice. Damn dangerously drinkable (the triple D!!!) for a 10% ABV brew.

Is this good? Yes, and then hell yes. Is it amazing? No. But there's a lot of room between good and amazing.

Abita Chocolate Dooberge Cake Stout, 8.0% ABV; 4.34 overall

Pours an effervescent mahogany hued chestnut with 2 fingers of mocha colored head. Above average lacing & head retention

S: Cocoa & vanilla in copious quantity

T: Follows the nose, powdery dryness, a little Baker's Chocolate up front. A little more Chocolate bitterness works in with the sweet as this this warms along with vanilla. Finished a little dry with on point sweetness

MF: Medium body, firm carbonation, wished the body was a little fuller

Drinks very easy, tastes just like a Chocolate Cake, probably the finest beer I've had from this brewery

Anagnorisis by Emerald Republic Brewing Co.

Poured from a 750 into a pint glass

Look: hazy pale orange with a thick white head

Smell: farmyard funk, mango, citrus, and oak

Taste: Big farmyard funk on the attack. This smooths out to a clean mango and tangerine body. Notes of hay, clove, vanilla, oak, mango, and light champagne vinegar.

Feel: Quenching at first but then dries out on the finish. Clean and yet bursting with flavor. The only hiccup is the carbonation is strange. It’s there just slightly and dissipates on the tongue quickly.

Overall: A well brewed and tasty BA Saison from these brewers. I just wish the carbonation was more present.

These guys got their roof ripped off during a wild storm a few weeks ago. I hope them all the best and a quick bounce back. They brew some tasty beers!

Godspeed Baby Svetly low ABV (1.5%) Czech pale lager.

I’d been looking forward to trying this since first reading about the release. I think that Godspeed is the best local lager maker, and am always curious to try sub 3% ABV beers by good breweries.

A vigorous pour into a silly glass received in a German beer advent calendar reveals a bright straw coloured beer with strong effervescence. A large pillowy head rests on top and subsides very slowly.

The aroma is slightly sweet, lightly lemony. Soda cracker.

Mild grain on the tongue. Faint sweetness. A hint of lemongrass on the finish. This is a very gentle beer. Mild. Not watery or thin, however. It certainly drinks like a ‘beer.’

The body is expectedly very light. Again, not watery.

I really like this for what it is. About as good as any NA or Low alcohol beer I’ve had. I hope this is in regular rotation at the brewery. I will buy it again.

Good evening all! This is my second new beer of the weekend, but first one I'm posting here.

This is Goldfinger Brewing Co.'s Maibock. I tasted this one as part of a blind tasting over in the bock tasting thread with two other beers that I have had in the past. The full blind tasting write up can be found here if interested: https://www.beeradvocate.com/commun...-april-23-25-2021.657821/page-10#post-7242432

As for this one, it poured a golden color, completely clear and very effervescent. Thinnish white sudsy head forms on the beer then dissipates leaving just a ring of foam along the outside of the top of the beer. Aroma had notes of sweet malts, light grainy notes, a touch of honey, with some floral, earthy hop notes on the back end.

Taste has rich bready malts up front, the bready notes come across as more rustic that has a touch of graininess to it. Honey like sweetness comes through along with floral, grassy hops on the back end. This is the hoppiest of the three beers, but mainly just because they seem to really come through most robustly. Moderate bitterness comes through on the back end. Feel was light to medium bodied. Light to moderate carbonation produces a smooth mouthfeel.

Overall, this was nice beer, but ultimately, the malt profile was just a bit too rough or rustic. I really want that rich sweetness and while this one heads in that direction it does so with a certain roughness around the edges. I enjoyed drinking it, but I found it rough around the edges - needing a bit more refinement, which I guess is to be expected from a new brewery.
