The wife and I got married in NOLA and are returning in mid-May for our 10 year anniversary (we'll both be vaccinated by then). We like to return as much as we can but haven't been since last year's national championship game, not long before COVID. I typically wouldn't need recommendations but am seeking them now since I don't know how and to what extent COVID has changed things.

What's open now? What's expected to be open by mid-May? What current restrictions are in place? What's the best way to follow the city's reopening status and otherwise monitor the COVID-related goings on?

Thanks in advance for your input!

(btw, not limited to beer--food recs more than welcome too)

I can't speak for New Orleans specifically as I live in a different place, but in Louisiana we're still under a mask mandate in public indoor places which is generally being followed and enforced at least where I am. Restaurants (and assumedly breweries) are open for business in limited capacity, and all places would be doing take-away and pick-up too. I would generally say that business should be open as usual but with restrictions and social distancing in place. You'd have to check with individual businesses (or look at their websites or Facebook pages) to see their specific arrangements.

Louisiana is currently in "Phase 3" of the reopening process--here is a link with a description of the current guidelines for restaurants, bars, etc.: https://gov.louisiana.gov/index.cfm/newsroom/detail/2987. The Louisiana Department of Health is a good reference for the current COVID situation in the state: https://ldh.la.gov/. I don't have any New Orleans-specific links, but the LDH link might point you in that direction. Enjoy your trip, and happy anniversary!

Blind Pelican shut down pre-COVID-- fairly nasty owner dispute.

504 Craft Beer Reserve on Tulane Ave in Mid-City is fully open. Really nice people and a decent tap list and bottle/can selection for both on premise consumption or to go.

What part of town are you planning to stay in?

Most of the tap rooms are open.

Miel Brewery is tap room only, and usually has a food truck. Its Uptown and a block away from NOLA Brewery, and a short cab ride to Port Orleans which has a restaurant in the tap room. Urban South is also in the area.

Parleaux in the Bywater is taproom only. It’s my favorite Brewery to visit. It’s out of the way so I would take a cab to the brewery. If you enjoy wine bars Bacchanal’s is a block or two away. I haven’t been to Bacchanal’s since before COVID, but I think they are open.

If you’re staying in the Quarter, Brieux Carre is another great taproom only brewery.

The Avenue Pub and the Bulldog are great places to visit.

If you’re in the City Park area 2nd Line Brewery is a great place to visit.

For restaurant’s, is there anything in particular you’re looking for?

GW Fins may be my favorite seafood restaurant.

If you want any local beer recommendations let me know what style you like.

The Avenue Pub still has Covid hours as opposed to it's usual 24/7/365. Such a cool place for many beers and a burger,

    Current Covid Hours

Things are slowly opening back up. Nice to see NOLA almost back to normal. I personally love Avenue Pub and Cochon Butcher for great food and beer.

Thanks for the detailed suggestions! I don't remember the name offhand but our hotel is in/just outside the Quarter, on or right off Canal.

Regarding restaurants, as of now not looking for anything in particular other than to avoid the touristy places--no desire to go back to Acme, for example.

I enjoy pretty much all styles, especially BA stouts and barleywines, but will probably steer toward light and refreshing while visiting, to comport with the temp + humidity. The wife enjoys the occasional stout but mainly likes IPAs, from hazies to Belgian pales, as well as hefes and Berliners.

    Thanks again!

I'd check out Courtyard (pretty walkable from Canal) and NOLA taproom (not that walkable from Canal). Avoid Crescent City - tourist trap-py.

The 24-hour stores on Canal should have pretty good local craft selections
