This is not an attack but genuine curiosity, what specifically is making us so nerdy here?
I would guess if untapped is a younger crowd then of course, every generation thinks that. Again curious for details..thanks

Probably that we genuinely nerd out about beer, and that UT is more for casual beer drinkers. I have the same situation with some of my friends; they'll talk all day on Reddit about beer, yet see BA as "too much trouble". They'll use all their available characters to talk up a brew on UT, yet are unwilling to just cut n paste that into a review here.

Maybe they prefer to spend their nerd energy on Star Wars, Pokemon, Metal, the NFL, or Knitting Advocate.

    Shrug.

If they can't get their priorities right and choose to waste their energy on dumb stuff instead of beer then im ok they aren't on BA

I had a BA account previously that I only had for the magazine subscription, however long ago that was. Never posted or contributed on that account. It used an old email I no longer have access to so I started a new one.

I've had this account for a while to use for reference and such but I didn't really get involved on the forum side until about 8 months ago. It's about the only social media I use. There's a lot of information and interesting posts here that both personally interest me as well as prove enlightening for my work. Occasionally, I get to ramble about my work experiences and seeing people like those is nice. So I'm a stayer, though I haven't been here long comparatively.

While I prefer the forums and the information I can find here, I continue to use Untappd for note taking and keeping tabs on the beers I have in my fridge due to its simplicity. I don't use any of the social stuff UT provides because it doesn't interest me... and I have no friends.

It's getting to a point where I'm recognizing names/avatars and it's nice to see familiar faces because I know I'll enjoy the content of their posts. While I'm not on a friend level with anyone here yet, I'd have a beer IRL (post COVID) with the vast majority of this community. :beers:

I stick around for the cellaring discussion as well as the occasional trade.

In terms of people leaving, a large group of people I used to interact with on the site all left around the same time seven or so years ago. Some resigned their account but most were kicked off by a former moderator who no longer seems to be active who loved the power of the ban-hammer. Don’t miss that guy’s arrogance one bit.

    The average beer drinker does not know or care about;
    How beer is brewed.
    Who is brewing thier beer.
    How breweries treat their employees.
If these breweries are environmentally responsible.
The legalities of brewing, selling and shipping of thier products.
I could go on and on.

This is a site full of aspiring experts and bonafide, full blown experts.

Where else would proud beer nerd go?
    Cheers.

Anyone with a higher than average knowledge level of any subject can be considered a nerd, often by those in the below average group. It can be a noble title, geek on the other hand......

I guess I’ve been here nearly 8 years - wow!

I am fairly sure that I found the site because its scores were printed on shelf tags at BevMo. I loved the wealth of information available (both reviews and poster’s historical knowledge) and got hooked.

Spent lots of time on WBAYDN. Waking up on a Saturday or Sunday and cracking a new beer at home...or on a weekday from one of the many cities/countries I traveled to. Sharing pics, and bantering with the regulars about music became somewhat of a ritual for me. I made lots of friends, did a bit of trading, and even had a few in-person meetups.

During COVID, my time on the site has dropped substantially. I’m not a “leaver”, but I just visit occasionally now. Somehow between lockdowns and work/family stress, this began to feel like more of a chore than an escape/hobby. Not being able to be out and about at breweries contributed, but I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the amount of good beer I can have delivered to my home now!

I also feel the site has developed a bit of a political slant, which has been a contributing factor to me spending time elsewhere.

I’m here for the beer. And looking forward to the next WBAYDN music event!

I had discovered this site back in late 2002. Liked what I saw back then. And joined in January 2003.
I really learned from the Bros. how to do real reviews of beer and to train my senses to pick up on all the aromas and tastes of beer. Forever grateful.
At times i have drifted but always end up coming back.
Mostly now for the camaraderie we had in the old PNW forum, and still have in the Pacific. Its a nice relaxed place to discuss beer..and just how you feel at the particular moment you are having that beer.( off topic I know )
18 years , wow time goes fast

Why do people feel that to love beer and be able to describe why you like a particular beer makes one a "nerd"?
Wine lovers are called connoisseurs..we have more right to that label then them.
Beer is not an inferior product.

Nerd is used lovingly here. I've hated it the few times folks have called me a "beer connoisseur", it's a pretentious and snobby term. Beer is a humble, yet complex, beverage, and the majority of beer lovers who care enough about that beverage do not deserve to be disparaged with that uppity term.

We can argue for our favorite styles with the passion of Sci-Fi folks arguing Star Trek vs Star Wars. That makes us us passionate and fun geeks, nerds, and obsessives!

I totally agree, but not everyone loves beer as much as we do at BA.

I've seen written that the difference between a nerd and a geek is mostly academic: Nerds are more academically inclined, and are focused on things. Nerds are enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and eager. But, the subject is not their profession or course of studies. A hobby, if you will.

The is no positive, or fun, connotation to snob. There are plenty of snobs in the beer world: those of us who don't drink AALs on the regular are called snobs by those who do, even if they also drink "good" beer. There's a bunch of us who consider folks who only drink "4.0+ rated beers" snobs, because they're missing out on a bunch of great beers, strictly based on others numerical scores.

    Shrug.
