Yeah I definitely have had some dry phases in my life. Like you mentioned, it becomes more of a habit than anything else at a certain point.

I’ll buy you a beer just for being a pro drummer. That’s a whole other ball game right there!

Exactly! The NA beers are far more fun and satisfying than water. I never drink full ABV beers if I am working at heights or with power tools and hardly ever if I need to drive. The NA beers allow you to look like you are drinking "real" beer when out with friends and the discussion you linked on NA beers is a great resource to narrow down the list of ones to try if someone is new to NA. I actually have found this thread to be inspiring and plan to cut back further on full ABV beers in favor of NA beers more days of the week.

They immediately went for the drinking, and I called them on it. I'd had a bad cold and then the flu just before the problems started, the flu morphed into an upper respiratory thang that I just couldn't shake. Now, alcohol is not good for you, but I'm pretty sure the flu kicked me into A-fib and CHF. My heart also recovered quite nicely after 5 months, my then cardiologist was more excited than I was. I admit that sometimes if I have a strong beer, the A-fib kicks up, but not always. Got a different cardiologist 7 months ago, and he's at least receptive to the viral cause, "Quite possible, it happens". Because I don't have a definitive cause (age, booze, inactivity, the trump administration) I'm taking it easy with the beer, haven't touched bourbon. I do not want to end up back in the hospital even though the staff and care were excellent.

    This is a great thread!
One thing I forgot to mention about beer, and this is from my own R & D, is that after multiple beers the body starts to get rid of the beers' water content and what goes with it? Essential vitamins and nutrients critical to proper bodily functions. Like repair. I'm talking internally that alcohol depletes water, vitamin B12 and potassium. Those are the big 3. I take a number of vitamin supplements mainly for my running but doing so helps out numerous things. Beer headaches are few and far between. But I'm no angel. I like to be having beers with friends and watch the sun come up. To the point, water and electrolytes help immensely to flush out free radicals and toxins. I weigh 155lbs. For every two beers I drink a 16oz glass of water. That's just my thing.
I thoroughly enjoy the beers that I get to have. Cheers!

It was probably 20-25 years ago that I decided that I had learned pretty much all I could about major beer styles by ticking, so I basically turned beer into a culinary beverage. I drink one each night with dinner (very occasionally two) whether I'm having dinner at home or at a local brewery or restaurant. Sunday is the day that I dip into my cellar for a special high ABV beer to accompany the nice dinner that my wife makes.

I've reached the point that at parties, etc. if I have more than two, I feel crappy that night and the next day. (Yes, I've turned into a lightweight and I recognize that my body is telling me that.) Treat any kind of alcohol as a poison (which it is) and that should give you incentive to be smart about your consumption.

I have a 2-tap kegerator in my bar area and a 4-tap keezer in my basement where my brewery is. Most of the time, we keep cans and bottles in the 2-tap kegerator and I'm about to have 4 homebrews on tap in the basement (trappist single, mexican lager with gin and lime, pale ale, and pale lager [split batch brew]).

My wife and I generally share 16oz cans so we limit consumption to a degree, but can have 2 different beers for 1 full can, so that's always great.

I agree completely with BigIronH; I rarely drank during the workweek as alcohol interferes with my sleep, and I am not as sharp the next day. I also have to face the facts that now that I am in my mid-fifties, I simply cannot "recover" like I used to. It is now mainly a Saturday evening event, and I look forward to it very much.

The sleep aspect was probably my biggest motivation to cut back. After 3 or 4 nights in a row of drinking and then getting up early for work, I found myself drained and it became a vicious cycle week to week. But, in addition to this, the reward system has begun to motivate me as well.

Its been over 20 years since I've had an N/A beer, but now I'm a little insipred to try a few. I'm a 1-2 beer a day guy, been finding that 3-4 beers I'm not as sharp the next day so I limite to 2. My weight has held steady for last 10 years however in last couple, the muscle tone /mass is being replaced with a beer belly. Skinny with a beer belly is not a good look. Need to do something about it.

a bicycle might help with that. One of the things I picked up after the heart issues.

I only drink on weekends. Sometimes I can’t quite make it so I’ll have one on Thursday or maybe Wednesday. Other times I might have something good left over from the weekend and I’ll have one on Monday or Tuesday.

I was the recipient of a new heart condition last Fall, requiring me to avoid or limit my intake of stimulants, including caffeine, opioids, behind-the-counter cold meds, and alcohol. Most of the beers I now buy are 4-8%, and I usually limit myself to one beer a day, about five days a week. I'm slowly working through my cellar of 10-18% ABV old favorites because I'm sure not going to pour them down the drain!

Understood for sure. Did they happen to mention to you if your issues were correlated to the drinking or was it unrelated?

Honestly, I have cut back to mostly just drinking on weekends. I’ll have one to three on Friday and Saturday and usually one on Sunday afternoon. Like the others I’ve cut back for health reasons, weight reduction, and to improve sleep. I’ll have an occasional beer here and there during the week but not often.

Bicycle riding is a great form of exercise, but it does very little for the belly. The weight room is much better for turning that belly keg back to a 6-pack.
