I guess the "one day" question is the one posed by this thread, through, right? I think a few of us are saying that changing back to New Beer Sunday doesn't really solve any of the real underlying dissatisfactions people are expressing.

What if we tried the next NBW with a host Introduction.. I nominate you for this task.

I might be able to at some point, but this weekend wouldn't work as I'm traveling.

What was the impetus behind disallowing non-beer-related discussion?

It was anticipatory, a way to speak your mind, writing as a way of life and reading similar comments from very trustworthy folks.

Yes, I expressed the latter in my second post in thus thread. NBS being the one day would not necessarily bring me back.

Edit: it was my second post, not first.

I'll throw my hat in with those who desire to return to eloquent opening posts for the thread and a loosening of off-topic beer conversations.

Beer is more than just a fermented, malted beverage. It is community. The throttling back of non-beer related topics, to me, goes against the social grain of how I know and experience beer drinking. Personally, I feel stifled about what I am "allowed" to discuss and post on NBW (and at least one other forum).

Whether the 'New Beer X' thread returns to a single weekend day or encompasses an entire weekend doesn't matter much to me as long as opening post stylishness returns and more leniency in off-topic content are permitted. And if none of that happens, I'll still contribute such as I can, but it's hardly as inspiring and as exciting as it once was. I'll adapt, regardless...

Same here, Doc, and the openings provided by you, @cjgiant, @cavedave, and Jane are what hooked me on the magnificent NBS threads. The dedicated host model is something I believe should return, whether the format is one day or two days.

And let me post pics of Ranger with impunity. That’s a simple request from a simple beer nerd.

But it is threads like this that do bring out that nostalgia-driven angst. I am a little guilty as well, but not enough to take my toys and go home. I'll adjust and adapt. Beer is part of my life, but it's not the boss of me (and I can't let that be the case), so maybe it is easier for me to adjust than some. There is that little nostalgic tug, though, no matter how attached or not I may actually be. Revisionist history, things and people change. I notice most newbie posts are really short, for instance, regardless of how welcome you make folks feel. There were some WTF posts seemingly totally unrelated upstream here. One reason (besides low consumption) for me not participating in WBAYDN was the tendency towards inside jokes and stories. To be fair, I don't know if that still goes on or not.

Why? I think the focus made it feel a bit more special, and the fact that people "talked" more openly than the typical WBAYDN post. The daily thread is stopping at the bar for a quick one after work. NBS is different, but whether that "different" is one or two or sometimes three days shouldn't matter. I believe having dedicated folk to start the thread was cool and added to the focus. But at that point it becomes a job in some sense although it did set the tone or even a theme for the day. I thought the idea of the change was to open it up across time zones and to allow more people in different parts of the world to play. The thread makes me think more about what I am tasting and try to capture it better in writing, and I have learned much about beer and what I like, and about the fine people here.

Content trimming...darned if can find it but I vaguely recall it being focused on beer, no more times, etc. and it had something to do with volume of content or some such technical thing.

And the point about Covid and the "lock up" is a real thing - I have heard that from other folks as well that realized how much of their lives were "on line" between all of the social media outlets and they were kinda horrified. Some...well...they just dug in even deeper like an Alabama tick, to paraphrase Jesse V., and have yet to emerge.

My opinion is why confine it to Sunday when there's folks enjoying new beer on Saturday that start their workweek on Sunday. It is a luxury to have Sunday off folks.

So my question is (and I'm not being disingenuous): can "we" decide to return those elements, the opening posts and off-topic banter, to the thread? Were these officially deemed improper?

I don't think the opening thread was deemed improper, just that Todd decided anyone can open the thread. Again, that seems fair, as there apparently weren't any 'officially' designated NBS / NBW hosts. Plus, that overall community thing...

The loosening of off-topic content - that, I believe, if enough voices support the idea, might allow more leeway in what can be discussed. Of course, that requires some temperance and discretion on our part so as not to unduly piss someone off (always been the case anyway, as far as I know). Perhaps some sort of BA sanctioned guidance on discussing off-topic things on this (or any thread) might be useful.

I don't know, just jazzing a bit while pushing supper into my face and nursing a beer...

I generally shop for beer, new and old, at my local craft beer joint during the week. Often, I’m too darn excited to wait to any weekend day, so I’ll drink it and post notes on whatever day that might be. Call it NBS or NBW makes no difference to me, I suppose. I’m usually only posting in WBAYDN anyway... Now, when I get a “special” beer that I traded for or bought online, I’m more inclined to save that for a weekend activity.

I am fine either way. Just can't see how the genie gets put back in the bottle for the old school NBS people. Half the people I used to follow there are gone in one way or another. I will say that it was a lengthy/tiresome thread to follow back in its peak, unless I had nothing going on Sunday. I am okay with the looser format of now,

    THIS. ALL OF THIS.

It was a CANpricious move & especially since none of the regulars were CANsulted (nor was an opinion poll CANducted).

What we seem to have now is a case of remorse, not buyer's, but killer's. You killed it, it's dead & that's it. Even if it returns, I won't be.

No remorse here. Just a simple question for the community. I’m good either way.

It's also not dead. It's simply evolved into something new. Something that's obviously welcoming new users into the world of reviewing (the core point of the thread; try and share something new) and accommodating users who would've otherwise not posted in the thread (the core point of the change to NBW).

    And welcome back, again!
