You put your finger right on the truth. NBS was an odd and beautiful weekly communion. I do miss the banter and the personal stories. It was a rare electronic marvel.

Just to note, I have posted small off topic stuff when doing a review since it has changed to NBW. If I'm at a brewery that has food, I'll get something like a burger and post about it along with the review. I almost always have a book I'm reading, and will mention it or work it in somehow as well. I don't think there has ever been a problem with that, or if there is, then nobody really pays attention to me anyway, which is fine as well

    Very possible

Disagree in this instance. I think the hosts of NBS deserved a ton of credit, and BA owes them some gratitude. (You and the other mods deserve some thanks and appreciation, too, for what it’s worth!)

Ha, thanks. I have been kind of absent the last few weeks, will try and get back to it soon.

I can only speak to my own frame of mind. I admit that I bear tremendous respect and gratitude to the hosts over the long years of NBS. I just don’t expect it myself, in whatever capacity. Whether that’s out of misplaced self-deprecation, or properly placed sense of personal insignificance - or somewhere in between - I can’t say.

I have been a huge music fan all of my life. All different types and genres. I learned about a lot of music in the old NBS and without the music I feel it was greatly diminished. Beer and music are inseparable. I also added to my beer knowledge and knew who to trust as I perused the beer shelves at my favorite store.

As I mentioned to @thebeers, I recognize “Get over it,” (to paraphrase) can be misconstrued. I recommend you read my response to him if you care to understand what I was getting at - but that’s hardly your responsibility. To summarize: it’s not “Your opinion doesn’t matter;” it’s “Don’t expend emotional capital on something you can’t change.”

@Todd has said there is no dedicated host, no gate keeper. He has been consistent and firm on that. That’s why I’m very matter of fact on it: because it simply is the case.

I’ve made it clear that I personally am in favor of dedicated hosts. You may have missed that; I’m long winded and have several posts in this thread. But that preference doesn’t serve me in any way if it’s something that isn’t going to change. It’s something I can choose to get over, or expend emotional capital while still not effecting any change.

As to the timeframe, I didn’t say it wasn’t different, I said it was arbitrary - and I suggested, tongue-in-cheek, that someone provide the timeframe that makes for the most perfect thread. If you are going to suggest my argument is weak, please at least capture it accurately. I submit that a two-day thread is still a limited timeframe; you literally said, in your post, that it is not (point 2). That, I quite simply do not agree with - because it’s mathematically incorrect. And again, a four hour window is also a limited timeframe (and different), but it doesn’t mean it’s better. Obviously.

Re: the matter of whether cross-posting with WBAYDN “dilutes” the NBW experience, I always include an invitation to check out NBW with my cross-posts. Not a good thing?

The lack of music is something I can’t argue against - except to say that I learn about music from WBAYDN?, and from the Off Topic forums (which didn’t exist in the NBS days).

It’s a valid thing to miss from NBS, but NBS doesn’t have to be the place I get that, either.

Totally a good thing. I frequently invite people to join us, for those who haven’t yet discovered the thread - at least once each weekend.

I think the “dilution” matters more when people are triple or quadruple posting: WBAYDN?, NBW, BIF, tasting thread. It starts to feel like a “Likes grab.” I personally prioritize NBW if I could post something in multiple places. I do cross post, but I actively try to avoid overdoing it.

I'm late to this thread. And so many of you have made amazing comments that capture many of my feelings and observations. If I remember correctly, the reason for not allowing "dedicated hosts" goes back to rules for the cBA community. Question: @Todd can this be changed? NBS/NBW is a very small corner of BA, and as we can see by a LOT of the feedback, it really gave NBS that "feel" of an intimate gathering.

As for the 1 day vs. 2, I agree that the change was just that, a change. And change can be a little stressful, but life is full of change. And I don't believe the change to 2 days is a tragedy. I leaned toward "yes" on the the change for the reason of inclusion. I truly believe that a wider timeframe makes it more open to BA's from a wider range of time zones. Also, it provides more space for back and forth. I like having the ability to read something from @Shanex or @Snowcrash000 on Saturday, comment, and get a reply on Sunday.

So, I would say yes, to keeping the 2 days. But I would be OK if it did go back. But I really would like to see some kind of return to the hosting/kickoff.

NBS seems to be bearing a huge existential/emotional burden for a lot of folks. Your comment is a good reminder that there are lots of places where one can have these needs met.

Any insight as to why, after 15 years, this become an issue? I had theorized it had something to do with BA’s new ownership, but was told that wasn’t the case.

Still not the case. I simply feel that no single person should "own" these threads. Allowing this in the past has created some of the issues/concerns expressed in this thread.

If we were to bring back NBS, with dedicated hosts, whoever posts would simply need to kick it off with a beer review and pic of their own (often times this was missing). I don't think that's too much to ask and it'll help set the tone/rules. And I'm fine with some off-topic life stuff being included, so long as that doesn't become the focus.

It doesn't matter to me, but I don't think that people who never post any pics should be commenting here. They're able to make a lot of posts every single day, but it's "too hard" for them to figure out how to post pics. Even when it's explained to them time after time.

My only issue with this (and pretty much disqualifies me as a host) is that this means the host has to start drinking pretty damn early in the day, a Sunday no less.

Thanks @Todd! Any latitude granted if the host posts a pic of the beer they plan to review later in the day, adding an element of foreshadowing to the thread (and where applicable any specific thread theme)? If not, might limit the selection(s) of high-ABV brews for the thread host.

Appreciate your willingness to explore options!
