Local beer - Shine On

 

Enjoying the hell out of them. Got a few in trades awhile back and got hooked. When I saw that the brewery was shipping its beer to Virginia I just had to order three four packs. Shipping was not cheap but worth it to me.

So how is life my friend.? Any big plans for the summer?

 

Had to go to Brazos Bookstore, the best new release bookstore in town, to pick up Paul Howarth's new novel Dust off the Bones. Which is the sequel to Only Killers and Thieves. Which is probably the best Western since Larry McMurtry or Cormac McCarthy. These, however are in the western genre, but taking place in Australia and deal with a lot of the same themes.

Anyway, no trip to Brazos is complete without stopping at my favorite old school dive, named after one of my favorite books...Under The Volcano, just down the road.

Then Hacker Pschorr Lager, and some beef short ribs that are way better than the $6 would suggest.

Having a brew from north of the border, Steamworks Lions Gate Lager, from lovely Vancouver B.C. Nice little brew.

 

Final pour today, also new to me and the brewery (all four today at the two breweries are new offerings). A collaboration with a Chicago Institution.

Half Acre It Pours

Half Acre X Morton Salt bring you It Pours IPA, a recipe brewed with Morton Salt. A 7% abv IPA that features one of our favorite New Zealand hop varieties: Riwaka. It Pours pays respect to a traditional IPA while pulling in elements of contemporary recipes. A cross of old and new, it delivers a unique stance on IPA today.

Appearance: Golden tan clear pour, light carbonation, cream bright white head leaves generous fine lacing. 9.5 oz draft pour into a thin tall taster glass. 4.0

Aroma: Firm and pleasant Riwaka hops aroma, pithy grapefruit, citrus, sweet and pleasant. 3.75

Taste: Consistent with aroma, grapefruit, citrus. Nice bitter offset, like this better than their hazy Riwaka DDC offering. A bit salty, in the proper measure. A traditional IPA, like it except disappointed I didn’t order a full pour. 4.25

Mouthfeel: Light to medium body, nice balance, bitterness offsets the riwaka sweetness. Easy drinking and clean finish. Perfect for style. 4.5

Overall: This is a solid IPA, the rivals hops are presented unfettered, the salt complements well. Balanced, light dryness, easy and enjoyable. I’m coming back for more. 4.25

 

I like their beers. They remind me of Fort Hill - which Im overdue to get some. Not turbid, just a little hazy and not too thick. The DDH Pulp is really damn good too.

 

Just dont get stopped by the Lawn Police. You step off that tractor and the engine shuts down you will get cited for not using the parking brake and shutting the blades off before dismount

I gotta get my sorry ass up north. Younger sister lives in Pennsylvania near NJ border. Older sister, her daughter, and granddaughter live in NJ. All good folks.

Prior to Covid , I had the good fortunate of meeting up with a number of BAs in Richmond. Some multiple times. I would like to think they came to Richmond to drink with me but I am not that stupid (wife disagrees). Richmond has an awesome beer scene and many BAs wanted the experience. I cannot remember all the breweries (Answer Brewpub, Veil, Triple Crossing, Hardywood, Vasen, and others) I had the honor of sharing a few too many beers with.

Lots of RL Burnside on this album.




As well as Junior Kimbrough, which they did on Chulahoma way back in the day, but its cool they continue on with him some more.

Would I chose this instead of the IPA and DIPA I had tonight? Hell no but just the same I always liked this lager.
