[IMG] So some of you may have noticed, I have been posting a lot early lately. I have been out of work, my family business that was established in 1990 is no longer. Medical supplies, that I have run along with my brother and sister since 2001. I am thinking about getting into the beer business or I have a few other options in the same field. I have a passion for beer, but as my wife has been stressed since my last day on 3/31/21 I need to really start to explore any avenue. I have still been getting a paycheck every 2 weeks, but just realized a week ago that the business won’t be moving forward and not sure when the money will be done flowing, I am at a cross road. I have been doing little things around the house and coaching my son and his buddies to a perfect 14-0 season in Cal Ripken Major level baseball, with districts 2 weeks away. That has been a bunch of fun for all. Anyway I will let you all know when I find my way.

Back to opening my personal favorite weekly thread. We want people to crack a new beer and tell us about that beer. How did it look, when was it canned or bottled, did it smell nice, very important what did it taste like, did it have a nice body and mouthfeel, and your overall experience with that beer. It is a great tool for all of us beer geeks to know what we passed on at the store. Take a little extra time with that new beer this weekend and make wish we were drinking it or in some cases glad we didn’t purchase.

Poured into a 13 oz not even sure what this glass would be called. Canned 5/27/21. Pours a hazy milky yellow with a half finger sticky white head, with really nice retention, leaving thick streaks of lace sip after glorious sip. I personally love this color in a NEDIPA. 5

Aroma mango, passionfruit, papaya, peach, pineapple, mandarin, melon, slightly dank marijuana, apricot, and grapefruit rind. 4.75

Taste follows and like the nose we have a lot going on with this one. Papaya, peach, pineapple, mandarin, honeydew melon, marijuana, apricot, and a little grapefruit bitterness in the bold balanced lingering finish. 4.75

Mouthfeel is pretty big, soft creamy mouthfeel, maybe a tad sticky but not dry, and at 8.5% ABV it goes down very easy. 4.75

Overall this brewery should be on people’s radar, because this one could hold its own with all the big boys in this style. I am pretty darn blown away with this one, a wow factor for sure. Thanks @jzeilinger for this top notch brew and sweet glass. 4.75

Thank you @SawDog505 for kicking off this week's thread. Huge changes like the one you are facing can be difficult, but they also can present great opportunities you wouldn't have considered until you make the leap. I recall you mentioned working recently in a beer store. I hope that is rewarding, and/or opens a door for you to pursue something else you feel even more passionate about within the beer industry.

I am naturally a night person. When I post this early, it is typically it is because I stayed up through most or all of the night, prefer going to sleep around 7-8AM til 2PM. What the hell, most breweries are closed until then anyway.

Today is no different. I'll usually stick with a lighter beer in the summer and in the "morning", and today is no different. Have two planned from this brewery for the weekend, just cracked open this one to start my weekend.

    Goldfinger Pils

Can Notes: 16 ounces canned 4/13/21 @20:26.4.9% ABV. German-Style Pils: Dry. Bright. Floral.

Appearance: Multiple pours into a large pilsner glass. Bubby generous white head lingers for a few minutes before leaving soapy and clumpy lacing. Mild carbonation, light faint straw yellow colour base. 3.75

    Aroma:
Nice bread cracker aroma, salty, grassy notes, consistent with a traditional pilsner. Medium strength, inviting. 4.0

    Taste:
Nice taste, consistent with the aroma, except the hops are much stronger than a traditional pilsner. Fresh cut lawn, light hay or straw, followed by saltines. It's OK to good, but perhaps to salty and bitter. 3.25

    Mouthfeel:
Carbonation persistent like Elizabeth Warren, small but fizzy bubbles throughout the serving. Light to medium body, dry and a persistent bitterness as well, suits my taste but may not others seeking a more traditional malt lead and sweet to neutral taste. Very light and easy drinking, slightly dry and dare I say bitter aftertaste. 3.75

    Overall:
Is this a Pilsner? Perhaps, though the uncharacteristic strong hops profile leaves room for doubt. Is the hops presence a reason this brewer is riding the hype train locally? Perhaps again. Did I enjoy this Pilsner as brewed? Yes. Not one I would necessarily seek out, as there are better local and national/international options out there, but it's a good beer I'd order if in the mood for a pilsner on the bitter side. However, I'd likely just grab an IPA or hoppy Pale Ale instead. 3.5

Looking forward to catching up after I wake up later today. Til then, I bid you a great beer day, wherever you are and whenever you choose to sleep or drink!

Review musically powered while cruising with Billy on 52nd Street.

Good morning NBS/NBW and thanks @SawDog505 for often taking the time to kick things off here every Saturday. Much appreciated.

There’s an ongoing discussion started by @Todd about the possibility of bringing NBS back with a poll even. It’s good at least that the owner of BA is willing to listen to his community and even put the fate of this thread into “our” hands.

As I replied, I’m happy with either, but NBS prior to 2020 certainly was something and even though I never contributed on a weekly basis provided something quite unique and outstanding. Will see later how the poll thing turn out.

For those who might have not noticed, I am not a Mod anymore (my Mod banner being gone should have been a clue…), I resigned to Todd for some personal reasons. Yet having been a mod for a bit over two years I was glad to have helped many and also did other mod tasks like beers and places to take care of behind the scenes. Or edit posts here and there on the forum. Todd told me my job was appreciated by him and many others users, which was the best “Thank you” I could have gotten.

Still a member and happily so now.

So today I have the Leffe Ambrée as a new beer in my glass:

    [IMG]free photo hosting

250ml bottle pouring a once inch white head fading quickly. 6,6% ABV.

This amber beer pours (duh…) an amber color.

Aroma is good, pleasant malts and a whiff of marmalade.

Taste follows the nose, refreshing initial hit as you get the orange zest, finishing with a smooth malt and some spices notes.

Mouthfeel is light bodied amber with high carbonation.

Overall this is a good beer. Nothing outstanding has ever been brewed by Leffe but you gotta respect their consistency of brewing decent to good beers for great prices in Europe at least.
Less than 5€ for a sixer of whatever Leffe variant.

    Cheers!

Thanks @SawDog505 for kicking off the thread, and as usual, quite well, at that. Best of luck in your next endeavor; my father started his own business from scratch, and when it finally closed, it would be easy to look on it as a failure, but I considered a 20-plus year run as an independent businessman one hell of a success. You and your family should, too, even though I’m sure it’s very difficult to move on.

Thanks also to @Shanex for his history as a moderator, especially one who focused on cleaning up the forums. It’s often a thankless and even invisible task; guys like him are the reason I can often focus on cleaning up the database, as forum problems are often so quickly resolved.

I too would like to encourage anyone interested in checking out Todd’s thread on the topic. Love NBW? Prefer NBS? The Man is directly asking for your feedback! Clearly some people have their preferences, and some people are ambivalent, but if you don’t chime in with why you prefer what you do, we obviously can’t have a fully informed discussion about the best way forward.

I am on the road this weekend, so I don’t know when - or even 100% if - I will be joining my fellow Weekenders (and if I do, it will be by phone, which I hate).

But I will at the very least be following my favorite thread, and living vicariously through you all!

    Good morning NBW
Thanks for the opening @SawDog505 and best of luck going forward.

I've harvested spinach, leaf lettuce and basil this morning. Also did some weeding and compost work. I find garden work a pleasant distraction from my 24/7 on call job in a steel mill. I was looking forward to this beer and while I'm thrilled that THBC starting dating their cans, this isn't the best example of a Kolsch style ale...
Terre Haute Brewing Company Waterwalker German-Style Kolsch

16oz can stamped CANNED ON 05/20/21 poured into a super stange glass at fridge temp 5% ABV 23 IBU. The beer pours mostly bright light honey amber in color with off white head. The head recedes to a thin cap and leaves a few spots of lacing. The aroma is faint with sweet, pale malt being the only stand alone note. The taste is more of the same with semisweet pale malt, a bit of wheat malt, mineral and noticeable bitterness with little hop flavor. The mouthfeel is thin to medium bodied with average carbonation and a mostly dry finish. Overall, good. The final pour revealed more yeast sediment than I'd like to see in my Kolsch style beers and I can't find a mash bill on the brewer's website, but there is a wheat presence here that I don't care for in the style. Nice beer so I gave it a bump in overall.

    Cheers all!

I picked up this beer to share with my wife. She enjoys all beers, but mostly likes sours and IPAs. Modern Times just recently began distributing in my area, so here we are, drinking Fruitlands. It is described as a gose with strawberry, lime, and hibiscus added. It is 4.8% ABV and was canned 02/17/21.
The beer is a rose gold color with a tiny white head.
Aroma of strawberry and citrus fruit, some floral hops.
    Taste of strawberry and lime.
Nice mouthfeel. Just salty enough and just sour enough.

    Hey what's going on!

Busy weekend here, much running around. Got a break so having a simple pint.

i like the theme of these beers.. neat touch.,

Poured from the can into a nonic(k) pint glass.

Creamy forming rich and tall bright white head. Stands an easy three fingers with creamy appearances and a big thick cap. Body color is a nice lemon brass, slightly hazy with a nice glow to it.

Fairly straightforward nose. Hop forward mostly with touches of simple pine and astringent like bitterness. Hints a little toasty on the malt bill as well which is a nice addition too.

Palate gets the job done. Pretty nice mouthfeel, chewy depth of malt backbone, and a touch of brown bread crust to go with it in flavor. Mid palate runs a nice hop mild citrus, but the aftertaste hits with large amounts of pine like bitterness. Toast like finish, but with a big hot pine heat that runs afterwards.

Not a bad pale ale, but quite bitter and astringent.

    look: 4 | smell: 4 | taste: 3.75 | feel: 4.25 | overall: 3.75 | 3.88/5

L - Murk and pretty opaque; has a decent glow to it.
S - Citrus, peach, stones and fruit, a little dank
T - Good Citra-dominant beer here; reminds me of Half Acre BHA
F - Solid mouthfeel, consistent, no alcohol or hop burn. Nicely done. There's a creaminess to this too... not sure if it's got lactose but this is well made murk.
O - This was one week old, fresh, delicious, and pretty solid.

Good luck in what ever Avenue you choose to go down. It’s a huge weight on you to be wondering where the money will be coming from. Look at it like this, the job market is wide open right now, certain businesses are practically begging for help. Pick what you want to do, and don’t settle, it’s a nice opportunity to do something you always wanted to do. Cheers!

I found a lager from Ingenious Brewing that piqued my interests. They are a brewery in north Houston, that I can only say jokingly makes beer. With things like Tangerine Creamsicle FroYo "IPA", Neapiliton Ice Cream Stout, or Peanut butter and Jelly Wheat (note: I'm not judging if you like that kind of thing, its just not for me to say the least). They are in the Urban South train of thought, and I'm always interested to see how these breweries handle "regular" beer. I think this is the first time I have ever had just a beer from Ingenious that didn't have some additive/flavoring of some kind.

Funny enough, the last time I thought I had a "regular" beer, was their so called Mild, but that turned out to have those marshmallow peeps and chocolate added, which was not advertised and they only mentioned it when I asked. I just chocked that down and left, and was the last time I visited the brewery. I picked a single of this up at my local bottle shop.

    So here we go...

Classic American Citra Pils. 5% ABV. Obviously going for an American Lager with Citra hops.

Pours a clear rustic yellow color. A two finger white head forms with good retention and lace left behind.
Nose is Orange rind and lemon. Citrus aromas dominate, with some tea like leafyness. Simple but enjoyable.
Taste is just the basic amount of orange rind and citrus up front. Then cereal grains. Nothing really lingers and no bitterness at all. Really light tasting here. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, and is the point. Though its too basic, as there are many examples of well made lagers around with much more nuance.
A light body, crisp carbonation. Clean and dry, which is nice. An easy porch drinker, especially for hot Houston summers. Something you don't have to think to much about.

I will come back to this in a heartbeat over almost anything else they make. Its a fine no frills drinking lager, which is the point. Though I think there are many better examples made locally and regionally (Saint Arnold, Holler, Live Oak especially). Still good on them for actually making a beer, instead of desert concoctions for once.

Overall score is 3.59, which is B territory for me.

Working through an amazing book, Dust off the Bones by Paul Howarth, its a western taking place in Australia. Revolving around horrible things done by the Native Police there to the aborigines. Its the sequel to Only Killers and Thieves, and this one is more about trying to bring to trial one of the main people responsible for the atrocities done . I enjoy these as much as books like Lonesome Dove, Blood Meridian, or The Son. Which is high praise from me.

Cheers to the weekend, and new beer! For me, this newbie is Over The Tops And On The Way Home by Cloudwater of Manchester. I am an enormous fanboy of Cloudwater, and I hold them as the best brewery in the world. This particular beer is an IPA Dry hopped with a combination of Citra, Idaho 7, Galaxy and NZ Cascade.

It pours a hazy, vibrant light orange with about an inch of fluffy head. Tremendous retention and some lovely lace curtains going on. 4.5

Smell is juicy and dank with notes of melon, tangerine, grass, grapes and some gooseberries, which is a note I often get from Cloudwater hoppy beers. Very clean, crisp and inviting. 4.5

Taste is... phenomenal. Juicy, dank and powerful, but still crisp and clean. Notes of melon, grass, citrus rind, gooseberries and mango. Some floral hints lead into a moderate bitterness with a nice bite to it, but no burn. Impeccable balance and damn easy to drink. A slight boozy hint keeps it from true perfection. 4.75

Mouthfeel is perfect, soft and pillowy with good carbonation. 5

Overall, another example of why Cloudwater are untouchable right now. Their IPAs are usually not all the way NE or west coast, but a hybrid that sits right smack in my wheelhouse. Great stuff! Total score: 4.7. Great way to start the evening!

Happy New Beer Weekend everyone! Cheers to @SawDog505 for kicking things off, good luck with everything and hoping your future is prosperous. Thanks to @Shanex for being a great moderator throughout your time. As far as the NBW/NBS debate goes, I would be fine either way so I decided not to vote in that poll. My feelings are there is more time for new beers with the extra day, and also more to keep up with in the thread. One day is a little more special yet also more restrictive with less time to drink the beers. I wouldn't mind going back to NBS, I'm also ok with the current NBW format. I'm not here every weekend anyway since I have a lot of old beers to get through and I don't always find something "new" on hand, when I do have something new and worthy though I try to save it for the weekends on here.

I just moved into a new apartment recently and brought some old good stuff with me. I randomly threw some beers in the fridge and have been trying to drink some down that I'm in the mood for. There is a couple new to me beers in there that I've saved for this weekend's thread, so time to start drinking. I'm starting off today with an old 2016 Sebago Brewing Barleywine ale aged in Bourbon Barrels.

This beer pours a dark burgundy maroon red brown with a creamy light tan khaki colored foam head that has decent retention.

Smells like molasses, dark toffee, cherry, dried dark fruit like fig, raisin, woody oak bourbon barrel, caramel, vanilla, slight chocolate, char, hint of cinnamon spice, with some earthy herbal piney hops.

Taste follows for the most part, big molasses, dark toffee, dark caramel, dark toasted bready malts, cherry, fig, raisin, maybe prune, dried dark fruit, woody oak bourbon barrel, hints of vanilla, chocolate, char, subtle cinnamon spice, with some slightly bitter earthy herbal piney hops.

Feels medium plus bodied, a bit thick and viscous, slick, creamy with smooth moderate carbonation.

Overall I'm really liking this aged bourbon barrel barleywine. It's hitting all the right spots that I expect from the style. Somehow it remains almost refreshing, the mouthfeel isn't too heavy, it has a nice dryness to it, not sure if the age helped or what but this is a really enjoyable barleywine imo. Great balance, enough hops to cut through any sweetness, not too much barrel character, good flavors especially as it opens up, this is a really nice bourbon barrel aged American barleywine even with nearly 5 years on it. I'll be sipping on this throughout the afternoon. Cheers everyone!
