Should we sync with Untappd's beer styles?

First, thanks to everyone for contributing in this forum. I've been reviewing all of the threads and replies and appreciate the passion and discussion.

When BeerAdvocate joined Next Glass back in February 2020, one of my big ideas was to create a unified beer database across all data-driven brands (BeerAdvocate, Untappd, Oznr, etc.) under the Next Glass umbrella. I'm not sure if or when this will happen, and it's a massive project, but I'll continue to push for it as the benefits for everyone are just as massive.

In the meantime, would it make more sense to sync with Untappd's beer styles? There'd be nothing stopping us from building out more styles once synced (at least until a unified beer styles database is created), but at the very least this could fast track our adding new styles (many of which are long overdue!) and create some consistency across the two platforms and those who use both.

Either way, I'd love to get your thoughts on this idea, as well as any pros and cons that you might have.

    Thanks!

I love both BeerAdvocate and Untappd for different reasons.

When it comes to styles I think sometimes we(don’t mean to be presumptuous there lol) get it better on styles than Untappd, & sometimes vice versa.

I really like their “International” pales & IPAs, sometimes, New Zealand/Japanese etc hops & or adjuncts provide a beer that isn’t quite a US IPA but in that general area.
Also love the listing of Grisette, almost as much as drinking it

But will defend with my very life's breath us having the definition of English Dark Mild & English Pale Mild, which they do not.

Somewhere before I said you can justify both having the definition of 3 different beer styles or 3 hundred.

So getting to brass tacks, I think being influenced by Untappd’s syle list may be a good thing, we shouldn’t just blindly adopt it.

I agree with @EmperorBevis , we should add certain styles, like international IPA, or something like Pilsner - Other, and absolutely NE DIPA. I also think TIPA should get it's own style. But I think Untappd as a whole is a bit cluttered, style-wise.

There's a lot of dreck in UTs styles, and some omissions. That needs to get cleaned up before any merger.

Agreed. They also link off to various sources for more info on the styles. Ideally, we could position BA to take the lead for beer styles and have them link to us to learn more!

I also like how they have some "xxxxxx- Other" styles, or "xxxxxx- International" styles that can serve as catch-all's that don't really fit with some of the traditional ingredients.

My thread about the "Norwegian Ale" question would have been solved by having the "Pale Ale - International" style on BA. And "Pilsner - Other" would solve the issue of highly hopped pilsners by American breweries.

I’m not advocating adding cider, I am in agreement with it’s omission here just saying that you couldn’t blindly install Untappd styles because they include Ciders.

oh and Meads but objected to me adding a none alcoholic Kumbucha

Pilsner - Other or Pilsner - American - either way, we need something to catch all of these pilsners that dont fit into the continental categories ...

    Nope.

If they're made too much alike, one of them becomes redundant. and we know which one would get dropped.

Don't care as long as we get different styles for saisons. No more mixed culture compared with traditional farmhouse! #splitupsaisons

If any untappd syncing were to happen would rather it be a way for us to have our profiles and ratings over there too

I like a lot about Untappd styles. But some are just too much. IPA - Brett, IPA - Farmhouse and IPA - Sour??? One beer could be considered any of those 3. Also, not a huge fan of "- Other".

So I like how BA does it, but I feel like it needs to broaden further. As I said on a style question awhile ago...if a brewer makes a beer and adds Milkshake IPA to the title, then maybe Milkshake IPA is a style.

I would be in favor of matching and including the Untapd categories for continuity across platforms. Also I don't think that "more" is necessarily worse, as far as style options. I will probably be in minority.

Agree with this, especially the NEDIPA  I also like the comment above about potentially splitting up Saison's.

I also agree with @EmperorBevis in regards to why we can't just copy over styles, since UT has cider, mead..
