Tributary has been getting a little bit of love here recently from it's Cultivator and, of course, Mott the Lesser. I thought we might start this up, but also, I wrote a lengthy profile on the brewery that I hope you'll take the time to read.

I will embarrassingly admit that I did not know (or never retained) Mott = Harpoon IPA.

He goes pretty in depth about it on his recent appearance on the Steal this Beer podcast. Pretty great story about the industry at the time.

Great story. I love that he told his son "Great, go get a job". I really need to make an effort to try more Tributary beers, I've only really tried Mott the Lesser I believe.

That is far too few. Best to have it at the source too. Tributary should be the next beer road trip!

Great read Matt! I’m so close and ashamed to admit I typically only visit when MtL is on tap. Time to remedy that. I was saddened to hear he’s starting to take a step back but love the idea of him and Galen taking some beercation’s and enjoying life!

Great read Matt! You’re a very talented writer. And you definitely made me want to make a concerted effort to drink more Tributary beyond MtL!

Good read. Tod is (or should be) right up there with the biggest names in craft beer in the US. Been around forever and has had a hand in some of the best known beers out there.
I've been up there for most of the MtL releases, plus a few other trips, and everything |I've had is excellent.

I have so many great stories from what hit the cutting room floor, too.

There's an obsessive push for quality, which is difficult to do with so many different styles. Legitimately it seems like he's made everything. And, I get it, not everything can be a home run, but everything has to be good.

Maybe I'm old (spoiler alert: I am), but Tributary is the kind of tasting room that I want to go to. I don't want 12 IPAs that just mix the same three popular hops together in different ratios. If I can go have a Helles then a California Common then a Belgian IPA and have them all be good to excellent? Sign me up. Far too few places like that.

In the pitch to the story, I wrote to the editor that it's highly likely that Tod Mott is your favorite brewers favorite brewer.

Quick story: I had set up an interview with another Maine brewer (this was a while ago) and we planned to meet at Black Birch. However, the place was closed because a pipe burst or something, so we switched locations to Tributary and to watch this particular brewer talk to Tod was really fucking cool, man. Just a complete being in awe of Tod, peppering him with questions, etc. It was neat.

I still haven't made it to Tributary, I've only heard fantastic things. My buddy and I went up to grab our Barreled Souls Bottle Society haul a couple of weeks back, did the Industrial Way thing and stopped by Bissell, and by the time we were ready to go to Tributary it was 6:45, and they closed at 7:00, on a Friday, which seemed weird.

Well now we know to go there first next time.

i believe the Friday hours are going to expand or might have already to 8 or later. Tributary is a little off the beaten path and Portsmouth and kittery foreside tend to pull in our nightlife so it makes sense for them.

Also, any of you go to the old Kate releases? Those were some fun times, albeit hectic!

Kate releases were probably the high water mark of my beer life. Maybe I’m conflating years a bit, but like 2008-2012. There was Kate and trips to Burlington to hunt for Heady. Plus there were no children in my life, so San Diego was an annual trip. Ahh, now I’m drinking Narragansett by the grill down the Cape and life is bueno, but fun times to reminisce upon for sure.

We’re long lost brothers. Yup, Kate was mid 2000’s and up. More fun before the ticket thing but always a good time. Also no kids at that time. Now my 5 year old is running all over pre k. San Diego was also my second home. Sleepless trips surfing as much as possible and finding the most palette wrecking iPas possible. I miss the tap room in Pacific Beach. Miss all my friends out there as well now. As I step into my 40’s in less than two months

Too many nights spent stumbling down Garnet Ave toward the pier. Hardly recognize that version of myself, cigarette dangling from my lips, filled with Pacificos and fish tacos. In those days, we loved AleSmith and Ballast Point (ah, when Sculpin was an anomaly). The one spot I’ll implore you to visit (if you haven’t already) is breakfast at Kono’s Surf Club. Best breakfast burrito in the land and the best view.

Now my friends are all inland (Temecula) or north (Oceanside, RSF). We are headed out this winter. Our boys days may not consist of carousing in PB or Mission Beach, but we will likely include some North Park.

Ahhh, memory lane on a Tuesday morning. Back to Trib talk.

My friends we’re between PB, Mission beach and La Jolla. Lots of interesting nights at Guava beach. Beers and burgers at Rocky’s. Always enjoyed the selection at Hamilton’s as well. Ohhh sculpin back then! So many fish tacos and reggae nights at longboards ha.

    Back to Tributary talk
