Also I hope everyone knows you can search top beers by style.
If you just want to see the top German Pilsners for example, you can already do that.

I'm in favor of 2 lists, 1) an all inclusive top beers list, and 2) year round top beers list under $1 an ounce or something to that effect. I also think seasonal beers that come out every year in variety packs (ie, Sam Adams Winter Variety Pack) or what not are fine in the more current and active beers list but reserve the big hitters that have short and limited exposure for the all inclusive top list. They way it would be more like one list is the Hall of Fame and the other list is the current All Star team.
But, I would like the list expanded to say 3, or 4, or even 500 top beers on both lists, that would give us all some goals.

Ding, ding. Winner, winner, chicken dinner. The current list is like an unknown Picasso hanging in someone's private home. They and their friends vote on it being the greatest painting ever made, but nobody else can see it. I don't doubt it is nice, but is it really that much better than the 12 Picassos in the public museum? Maybe...we'll never know. Is it valid to list it as the greatest paining in the world? Maybe not.

I thought so too. But - The vote says "split up", If you're in the "don't change the old list but creating a 2nd "top available" list sounds groovy" camp - which a lot of posters seem to be - then I could see yes or no to "splitting it up" sounding correct.

Interesting you include a bunch of beers nobody can get unless they live next to the brewery, but skip all the most widely available/distributed beers in the top 50 that anyone can get like BCBS, KBS, Parabola...none of which are IPAs.

I was under the impression those weren’t released year-round. My bad I guess they are.

Pretty sure he meant they were easily available now for most of us, and on shelf for months, or all year, or in some cases for multiple years.

I think that’s probably what he meant also. It sounds like the proposed change wouldn’t calculate that factor though.
You could make a “secondary value less than $50” list, but good luck figuring out those numbers, when they are not hard statistics.
Todd’s post stated changing it to year-round available beer, and that’s what I was trying to reflect in my post.

Could be fun to do a top 250 per year (or top 100) - which would reflect how many of these top hitters are one-offs or are a function of a particular trend in brewing, but not necessarily a "beer of fame" Another way to cut this, statistically speaking, would be to build another category under your "Beer of Fame". You've got criteria for beers of fame (minimum number of reviews, scores, etc.) so you could come up with the same here. Top 250 based upon scores would reflect (I think) what you have now, and then maybe something which consistently keeps a high score over time would be "Top 250 beer of potential fame" until it graduates to that list.

I voted no. I think the top 250 should stay as is. Including the other filters might be a nice addition though. IMO, you should always have a 'top' list with no qualifiers (minimum requirements to be considered, but no qualifiers).

No no no it can’t be! The top 250 are just beers with inflated ratings and is impossible to get anywhere! Especially a top 5 beer on that list. It’s a dumb list!

I voted "yes" because the main Top 250 should reflect beers that people can actually find throughout the year. There can also be a top 250 for rare/specialty beers.

Personally, I'd also like to see a list of top beers for each of the four seasons.

Most important, no matter what happens with the Top 250, the Beers of Fame is still the most important list to me.

Yes, yes, a thousand times yes.

There is no point in listing a beer that's a one off or extremely limited, as very few people will ever get a chance to try it unless they actively trade.

I would suggest having multiple top 100 lists divided by major style: IPA's, stouts, pilsners, saison, etc.
