Greetings fellow BAs, and welcome to another New Beer Weekend. It's a beautiful day here in New England, and I have a full agenda consisting of watching soccer, sitting by the lake, reading, and of course trying out some new beers. In other words, it's looking like about a perfect day! I hope you will join in by sharing your thoughts with this group on any new to you beers you may be fortunate enough to try this weekend.

If there are any lurkers out there who have thought about posting in the past but never made the leap, this is your week, as I'll set the bar nice and low. I love trying new beers, and I love seeing what other people are enjoying, but my unsophisticated palate and questionable ability to describe things in detail means my reviews are rarely going to blow anybody away.....and that's totally ok! So join in by sharing your thoughts (taste, feel, aroma, appearance etc.) on whatever new to you beer you're trying this weekend, and don't worry if your reviews aren't world-class, I'll be right there with you.

I'll start off with this can of Smirk of the Dolphin, by Foam Brewers in Burlington, VT. My wife and I were in Burlington a month ago, and while I had several beers on their patio, I'm finally getting around to enjoying the cans I brought home.

Smirk of the Dolphin - Sour DIPIA with Sea Salt and Passion Fruit

    3.71/5 rDev -8.2% | Average: 4.04
    look: 3.75 | smell: 4 | taste: 3.5 | feel: 3.75 | overall: 3.75

Pours bright and yellow with not as much initial head as I would have expected, but good retention and lacing. Aroma is grapefruit, mango and other tropical fruits. Overall, an enticing aroma even from a few feet away.

First taste took me by surprise, as I didn't realize this had salt in it, and that was very noticeable right from the jump. I'm halfway through the can and still not sure if I like it or not. There's a nice passionfruit flavor with a bit of grapefruit, but the salt addition is what I'm trying to get used to. Relatively soft feel and medium carb.

Overall, I think this is exactly what the brewer was going for, but I'm not sure it's my favorite twist on a DIPA.

This morning I am doing some chores around the house and then headed out to Home Depot to pick up some vegetable plants. Our current living situation doesn't allow for me to have a big garden, but I do what I can with the little space I do have. Its generally just an assortment of tomatoes, peppers and herbs - I anticipate this year will be no different. For me gardening is a calming, centering activity. There is nothing like the quiet alone time I get when watering the plants on a hot summer evening - So Im looking forward to getting everything in the dirt today and kicking off another growing season.

This is Dovetail - Dunkelweizen. This beer checks in at 5% ABV and is a recent addition to their canned lineup but has been on tap at the brewery in the past.

Pours a dark mahogany brown color - cloudy and opaque. Thick pillowy tan head forms on the beer then slowly recedes leaving just a thin layer of foam on top of the beer with a thicker ring surrounding the outside. Its a lovely looking beer and has one of the better heads for a dovetail weizen. The aroma has some notes of dried wheat, clove, dark bread, pepper, and all spice. Its initially somewhat muted, but this was in the upstairs fridge so it just got a bit too cold - those aromas do blossom a bit more as it warms up.

Taste follows the nose with some notes of dried wheat, dark bread, pumpernickel, clove, pepper and a general mulled spice quality to it. However, all of that takes a back seat to the completely distracting twangy sour taste I am getting from this ... I have no idea what it is, but it doesn't seem right, and frankly it kind of ruins the whole beer for me. There is a light hoppy bitterness on the back end - but its Feel is medium bodied, smooth and creamy. Moderate carbonation.

Overall this beer would be really nice - if not for that sour twangy note. As it is, with that there on the flavor profile, its distracting enough that I really did not enjoy this one.

Dragon's Milk 2021 Reserve 2. Double bourbon barrel-aged stout with Madagascar & Indonesian vanilla beans. Pitch black, with light foam that quickly dissipates. The smell is strong with vanilla, chocolate, coffee, and bourbon. The taste is chocolate-forward, with intense vanilla, toffee, toasted oak, smoke, with a bit of fruit flavor. The mouthfeel is lead by a lot of carbonation. More than I recall from other Dragon's Milk editions. It is bubbly, oily, think, and high-viscosity. Overall, this a good chapter of the Dragon's Milk saga, but not one of my favorites. The vanilla and chocolate flavor that I like is there, but not in a way that I believe to be more special than similar beers.

A very nice opening from @Roy_Hobbs.
Just back from a walk with the dogs, not too hot yet. I got a Beer Drop shipment the other day, and this gose sounded like it would hit the spot. And it does.
This is Margarita Gose from Fernson Brewing Company in Sioux Falls, SD (my first South Dakota beer!).
A hazy gold color. One inch white head that disappeared rapidly.
    Citrus fruit aroma.
Taste of lime, a little orange. Sweet and salty.
    Crisp, nice sour aftertaste.

    hey what's going on!?

Back for another new beers of weekend.. and taking it all in with good stride. Got some real nice Zzzz's in this morning much needed.

Starting off with this simple little number, fun little can art.

Poured from the can into a Spiegelau IPA glass.

Beaming dark orange/tangerine colored body, with some clarity and nice amounts of fine carbonation. Fluffy, and bright topped three finger white head, with a soft creamy top and thick chunky like lacing abounds. Great looking IPA.

Good solid aroma. Mild hints of sweet earthy hop, touching a little bit of tropical fruit. Some of the sweetness accents a little bit of caramel like malt it seems also. Fairly basic, but pretty good, nothing earth (forgive the pun) shattering. Small hints of tea like hops also.

Palate keeps the goods delivering. Nicely juiced, with a faint hint of mango and orange flavors on first sip. Good hinting tropical guava like flavors too, with a grass and earthy punch. Good balance mix of malt and hops, with a real good contrast between sweetness and bitterness nicely.

Not an amazing IPA, but a real good solid drinker and go to.

    look: 4.25 | smell: 4 | taste: 4 | feel: 4 | overall: 4 | Final score: 4.02/5

    Cheers!

Unlike most beer drinkers (at least U.S. based ones), I'm not a huge fan of IPAs, so it's not common for me to have back to back DIPAs, but here I find myself. This is another one from Foam Brewers. I highly recommend making a visit to their flagship location in Burlington VT, and Burlington in general. Stay at the Courtyard Marriott and splurge for the lakeview room. You will not regret it.

Very nice appearance. Inch+ of foamy white head with reasonable retention and excellent lacing. It's hazy without being murky, and a really nice, bright yellow in color. I found the aroma relatively unremarkable. When it comes to IPAs, I have a bias towards aromas that burst from the glass, and this one has me sticking my nose well into the Teku in which it was served to pick up the citrus and tropical notes.

Taste is nicely balanced, with grapefruit & a potpourri of citrus notes, although I find it overall somewhat subdued (much like the aroma). I am enjoying how the tropical notes are well complemented by just the right amount of bitterness.

Overall this is an interesting beer. It's not overly complex, but is a good example of how a more simple approach in the hands of the right brewer can still be very good. I have no general love for IPAs, but am enjoying this one.

Growing things must be in my genes. Amen on the calming influence, it's truly been essential through the years. Our wild herb garden is a riot of peppermint, lemon balm, bee balm, oregano, catnip, and whatever else shows up! Tomatoes are in the back yard and growing well. They need lots of water so far this season. Fourth of July BLTs and tomato sandwiches seems on schedule.

Thank You 2021, from Maine Beer Company. 6.4% ABV. IPA of coarse. I always look forward to trying a new Maine beer.

Pours a clear golden/orange color. A dense white head rises to two fingers. Excellent retention and lace left behind. This is a looker.
A simple hoppy aroma of tropical fruits, berries, and bread crust. Certainly not the most complex nose, but enticing.
Taste wise has that tropical fruit and berry flavor again, and has more punch up front here. Biscuit/bread like flavors. A wonderful lingering bitterness brings everything together nicely.
A medium body with good carbonation. Not overly effervescent but not "soft" either. Just the right amount of firmness, that becomes ultra smooth after a minute. Easy to drink for sure, just classic all around and I always appreciate that from Maine.

I'm always more appreciative of just well made and to the point beers. This is a perfect example, normally with an IPA, I think a lot of people look for more aggressiveness. Though this just reminds me why I like things simple. Very much to the point, moreish, and well done. Sometimes I think breweries forget that, and glad Maine will not.

Overall score is 4.14, solid A- from me.

Also, just now starting Clarice Lispector's The Hour of the Star. This is the last book she published while alive, I have always wanted to read this but think its been out of print until thos wonderful 100 year anniversary edition by the great New Directions publishing. One of the great true independent publishers, and they always focus on translations of foreign books to English. She is one of the oddest, to put it lightly, writers I have come across.

Got some classic Hefe's to open later and some tunes to spin as well...will see you in one of the other threads later today.

Good afternoon, Weekenders! It took me quite a while to get to today's first beer (yesterday's schedule of imbibement may have had something to do with that  ). Starting off with a NE IPA from a New England brewery known for wonderful IPAs - but not specifically NE IPAs.

Missing is a collaboration between Beer'd, Outer Light, and Barley Head, brewed for a good cause: to raise money for a local farmer whose grain trailer was stolen. It's a shitty thing to have happened, but it's always nice to see good people come together in a time of need.

Beer'd's hop bombs are second to none, and this one is no exception. It doesn't bring anything particularly new or unique to the modern NE IPA experience, but it's executed supremely well. Full flavored, juicy, and creamy, with notes of orange, mango, papaya, cream, and moderate dankness.

I like it quite a bit.

I agree, I like the new TreeHose CC logo. I have an extensive glass collection and I am a sucker for cool designs, glassware and unique glasses. I used to represent a very cool line of belgium glassware (Durobor) and they had some cool stuff. Cant wait for THCC to start releasing more gear.

The pool is more a Mrs Wunderllama thing. It is pretty nice and Mrs wunderLllama consistently outdoes herself with the surrounding gardens. Going in the pool today for the first time since surgery. I extended an invite to you to discuss how to fix @ovaltines wagon poolside but, I guess you are too busy changing diapers....
