Thank you for kicking off the thread today @Roy_Hobbs !

Sorry the Dunkelweizen was a rare Dovetail miss for you @FBarber , I like their Dunkel, but have not had this beer or the one you presented yesterday in the Wheat tasting thread.

Thank you for your review @champ103 , I've been meaning to try to track one of those down since I saw it pop up on WBAYDN the past few weeks. Speaking of which, my first new to me beer this week I popped open close to 8 this morning. It's a gift from my brother, so a nice start to the day.

    Yuengling Golden Pilsner

    Bottle Notes:
12 oz bottle, no ABV. Date hard to decipher, but I believe this was bottled May 13, 2021 based on a barely readable Julian calendar date.

    Appearance:
12 oz bottle poured into a large cylinder glass. Light pale straw base. Aggressive foamy rich head, bubbly, lingers for a few minutes before leaving nominal clumpy lacing and a constant layer above the base. Persistent medium carbonation throughout. 3.75

    Aroma:
Nice bold pilsner aroma, salty crackers, light grassy backing and citrus lemon hops presence. Nice. 4.0

    Taste:
Consistent with the aroma but lighter in strength. Malt leads, very salty crackers, hops remain in the background, lemon and lemon grass. Somewhat watery. 3.5

    Mouthfeel:
Light thin body, watery. Light fizzy carbonation persistent throughout, slight dryness, balanced on the sweet bitter scale, very easy drinking, nice clean finish. 3.5

    Overall:
This is a good pilsner offering, smells and tastes consistent with the style, malt runs this show, light hop backing, easy drinking for a hot summer day. Thank you Andy! 3.5

The standard Yuengling Lager is one of my lowest rated beers, just very watered down and tasteless beyond salt, so glad this one worked out a lot better.

Depending on how the day goes, I hope to find a wheat beer. Til then....

Thanks @Roy_Hobbs for the kickoff post. Coming in early for me with a wit from Allagash. I found a single can in a random stop at a store that doesn't carry much from Allagash. Starling Wit graces the glass, splitting with the missus.

Pours quite clear for the style with a fairly dense pure white head. Wheaty tang and plenty of Orange on the nose. Earthy ginger and coriander in the background. As it sits, the typical Belgian spiciness emerges.

The taste is crisp and clean. Pretty orange forward, but the ginger, coriander, and yeast driven flavors all play nicely. Tangy wheat holds it all together. Slight earthy notes.

It is light to medium bodied, fairly refreshing with a clean finish. Peppery spice shows up after a few sips. Pretty enjoyable overall. A more flavorful version of their White.

Debating whether I want to go get the lawnmower running..if I do, that means work. Hmmm...maybe best to not risk it...

Dark, honey-amber body; mildly cloudy; thick and creamy head, dense and spongy. Strong banana note in the smell; sweet. Decently flavorful; more grainy than sweet and less of the Isoamyl acetate (i.e., banana) taste; honey; mild bitterness; yeasty. Heavy body; sticky and sweet on the palate.

Ayinger has a rock solid German dark wheat beer.

When I was a teenager, I used to watch a lot of horror movies, like a lot. I watched many of them with my friend Erik, whose father was a Congregational pastor (and widower) who joined us for many long movie marathons, mostly on VHS tape. We favored low-budget, culty flicks like Peter Jackson’s Bad Taste and the Hellraiser films, and one of our favorites was Phantasm. The plot is almost embarrassing to describe, involving a super-tall mortician (Angus Scrimm) who turns corpses into dwarf-slaves before transporting them into another hellish dimension (!) There’s also a cool, small, silver sphere that plants itself into people’s foreheads and drills their brains out. It’s extremely dumb, but wonderfully atmospheric, and has some big fans—JJ Abrams not only paid to have the film recently digitally restored, but also named the character Captain Phasma in The Force Awakens after it. I recently re-watched it on Amazon Prime, and the story didn’t hold up at all, but it’s visuals are still super cool to watch.

How’s that for off-topic? Let me bring it back around to beer by mentioning that phantasm is also the name of a “thiol-based” ingredient that I’ve see pop up in a lot of beer descriptions lately. It’s apparently brand new to the market, and several breweries are experimenting with it. Including—tada!—Trillium, who incorporated it into my new beer for today, Dialed Out. This is a variation of Dialed Up, their DIPA that incorporates Sauvignon Blanc grape must and was, for a long time, probably my favorite “winey” beer. The first couple of times I had it, I was blown away; it really tasted like all the best of a good Sauv Blanc and NEIPA, perfectly balanced and highly sippable. It’s been years since I had it, and I’m a little skeptical of this phantasm business, but let’s get to it.

Pours slightly less opaque than your typical Trillium brew, light gold, with a delicate, almost fragile head that slowly pops away like bath bubbles. Aroma is somewhat muted, with the white grape pushing through a “scrimm” (see what I did there?) of light citrus and pineapple. First taste is somewhat disappointingly one-note, diluted orange juice and very little white grape. At this point, I’m not really sure what the phantasm is doing, aside from possibly masking the complexity of the must. As the glass warms, something interesting happens—a lot more flavor comes out, but not of a wine character. It’s a ton of not-quite-ripe, almost candied berry, the first time I would have called a flavor gummy bear-like, which Tired Hands likes to claim all the time. It’s not unpleasant, but quite far away from the Sauv Blanc experience I remember from Dialed Up. What isoutstanding is the mouthfeel, no surprise, and even has a bit of the coppery zip I associate with many white wines. Not sure if that’s the phantasm, but I’m into it.

Overall, I suspect that I would like this quite a bit more if I didn’t have such firm memories of Dialed Up entrenched in my palate. I also suspect that Trillium (and other brewers) have a way to go to figure out how phantasm works best, possibly with other hop combos or beers. Glad to have tried, but not one of my fave Trillium beers by a long shot.

Those old Peter Jackson horror movies are something else, I love what he did with TLOTR (I mean its not perfect and they made some pretty big changes but come on, thats just nit picking). Though when I first heard he was doing the trilogy, I thought hmm, that guy?? I was a freshmen in high school and my friends and I had just happened to watch a bunch of those on VHS, then we heard the news. I was really excited regardless as it was all just weird.

Aroma peach, mango, coconut, pineapple, apricot, and grapefruit rind. 4

Taste follows coconut, mango, peach, pineapple, apricot, and grapefruit pretty well balanced with some bitterness in the finish. 4

Mouthfeel is above average, a tad sticky not dry, soft gentle carbonation, and at 8.2% really easy drinking. 4

Overall this is nice, not dazzled but slightly different and pretty tasty. 4

    Moving to another new brew.

Poured from the can into a nonic(k) pint glass.

Pale brass yellow, with a touch of slight haze. Thick full three finger head height, and a big collar like lace as the beer settles. Nicely capped but a little frozen and murky in the mix.
Assuming this is a single hop only addition, it's a neat profile. Nice airy aroma of earth and soft almost passion fruit like flavors on the hop nose. Hints a little earth and pine. Fairly basic but good.

Palate sticks to basics. Chewy hints of wheat like flavors, with a mix of simple backbone. Tangy hop profile, hints a little less fruity than the nose, and more of a sharp grass and sage like herbs. Finishes with soft bitterness, almost like a pils sensing quality as well which is interesting. Real delicious spicy mix in the aftertaste that lingers.

    Neat pale ale.

    Cheers!

I gotta ask @JayORear because of all the horror stuff. Do you watch American horror story? It is the one new show I still watch and get excited for. The weird thing is I hate all horror except that show. I think I’m scarred from watching VHS Jason tapes at elementary school sleepovers. Hilarious as a parent now looking back. Who the hells parents let’s there 5th graders watch horror movies :joy:

Thanks @WunderLlama you weren’t kidding it is literally right off 91. That has to be good for business.

Sticking local for New Beer #2 with Outer Light's Lei Lo, a 5.5% ABV NE IPA with pineapple, papaya, and hibiscus.

If the goal was a light, tropical mixer, crushable on a Summer day, then I suppose they succeeded - but it's just not my jam.

Most IPAs this low in ABV are too watery, lacking any punch and delivery to the palate, and this one is no exception. The fruit and flower don't contribute in a particularly pleasant way, instead combining on the finish in a semi-sweet, pungent, earthy, and tannic fashion.

It's not a bad beer, but I'm not particularly enjoying it. I'll make it through the can, but I regret purchasing a four pack.

Brauerei Gebrüder Maisel - Maisel's Weiße Original

    Hefeweizen from Germany (5.1%).

Pours a cloudy, deep amber coloration with a medium, creamy head. Smells of doughy malt, estery fruit/spice and hints of grassy, citrus hops, with notes of banana, clove and tangerine.

Taste is a great balance of doughy malt, estery fruit and spice notes of banana and clove and hoppy accents of grass and tangerine. Finishes with a light bitterness and some banana, clove and tangerine lingering in the aftertaste. Soft mouthfeel with a medium body and carbonation.

This is quite a hoppy Hefeweizen, with the tangerine accents almost standing out more than the classical banana note, while the clove is very present here without becoming overbearing though. Somewhat unusual, rather dark amber coloration for a Hefeweizen as well, which is quite attractive actually though, with a rather nice, soft mouthfeel as well.

Overall, I think this strikes a great balance of malt, esters and hops, with the distinct citrus accents lending quite a refreshing feel to this.

Schneider Weisse G. Schneider & Sohn - Tap 07 Original

    Hefeweizen from Germany (5.4%).

Pours a cloudy, deep, dark amber coloration with a medium, creamy head. Smells of doughy, slightly bready, caramelly malt and fruity and spicy yeast esters, with notes of banana and clove.

Taste is a good balance of doughy, slightly bready, caramelly malt and fruity and spicy yeast esters of banana and clove, as well as very subtle hoppy hints of citrus and apricot. Finishes with a light bitterness and some banana, clove and subtle citrus accents lingering in the aftertaste. Soft mouthfeel with a medium/rich body and medium carbonation.

This is quite dark and rich for a Hefeweizen, with a bit heavier focus on the malts, which lend a certain, light caramel sweetness to this, feeling almost more like a Dunkelweizen. There are still some quite distinct yeast esters to this though, with the clove standing out particularly, which I personally rather like, as well as lighter, quite subtle citrus and stone fruit accents.

Overall, this makes for a somewhat unique, quite malty, Hefeweizen that's a bit too sweet for my personal taste, but still is still rather enjoyable for it's distinct yeast esters, subtle hoppiness and rich body and mouthfeel.

Ink black body; thin, wispy khaki head primarily forming a collar around the inside of the glass. Intense roasted and earthy grain aroma; wood char; peanut butter; vanilla. The taste amplifies the smell plus adds a bit a whiskey booziness to the mix; char bitterness; dark spice presence like cinnamon. Heavy body; sludgy; slow-burn alcohol warmth intensity; dark sweetness with an earthy dryness.

Man, compared to the original Chupacabra, this one has turned the taste up to '11'. And I loved the first batch! Rich and incredibly complex and deep in character. Woulda, coulda, shoulda grabbed a few more...

Poured at 60° F; no dating information noted on the can.

You know, Mrs. BeerGoot and I didn't get a lot of sleep last night (Rocket the Wonder Dog is suffering from some gastrointestinal distress). We believe we know the cause. Despite that, Turner Classic Movies has been airing some great jazz and now rock movies, and we've got the food prepped for some po' boy sandwiches for supper. The weather has produced some nice heavy yet relatively short rain (much needed), and USPS and FedEx have dropped off some great rock and jazz vinyl for me.

I was going to make my next beer a fine low ABV beer from the Collegiate Peaks area, but, damn it, life is to big to go small...and when I think of big, I think of Texas...and this incredible wow-factor beer feeds the need...

Lack of sleep, high octane beers, and a will to live life to the fullest does have it's own weird (and satisfying) rewards...

    Erdinger Weißbräu - Weißbier

    Hefeweizen from Germany (5.3%).

Pours a slightly cloudy, deep golden coloration with a medium, frothy head and slightly visible carbonation. Smells of doughy malt, grassy hops and hints of spicy yeast esters, as well as a certain mineral note.

Taste is a decent balance of sweet'ish doughy malt, very light spicy/fruity yeast esters of banana and clove, as well as some bitter, grassy hops and a certain mineral note also coming through. Finishes with a medium bitterness and some grassy hops, hints of clove and that certain mineral note lingering in the aftertaste. Soft mouthfeel with a light/medium body and medium/strong carbonation.

This Hefeweizen is seriously lacking in that typical estery yeast character to me, while it also feels somewhat light-bodied and over-carbonated, despite a decent, soft mouthfeel. While some clove is noticeable, there very little banana to be found here, with the flavor profile being dominated by rather sweet malt and grassy hops, as well as a certain minerality.

The balance just doesn't work out at all for me here, with this being quite sweet despite lacking in a rich maltiness, the yeast esters being way too weak here, while the grassy, mineral notes are too pronounced for my personal taste. One of the worst Hefeweizens I've ever had, to be honest.

Currently listening to: Ramones - Gimme Gimme Shock Treatment.

EDIT: Interestingly enough, I've just learned that this beer is not bottle conditioned like most Hefeweizens, which may explain a lot.

Pours a mostly clear, very light straw color with a finger of fizzy white head that mostly dissipated quickly except for a thin layer that lasts and lasts. Aroma is bread and grass and really pops from the glass. Would I have known it was a Kolsch style ale vs. another German pilsner? No, but it smells nice.

On the palate, it's clean, crisp and refreshing. The grass, floral and herbal notes carry through from the aroma and make for an easy to drink beer. Happy to have a few more of these sitting around.
