    New outta town hefe

I’m in Aurora IL (cue Wayne’s World) for a soccer weekend with my eldest. We just happen to be staying across the parking lot of Two Brothers Roundhouse. What a happy coincidence.

This morning started with a very early drive from West MI. The game ended in a 1-1 tie against some very solid competition. Weather was great, and we’re in for another early one tomorrow.

    On to the beer…

    Ebel’s Weiss from Two Brothers

    look: 4.5 | smell: 4.25 | taste: 4.25 | feel: 4 | overall: 4.25

On-tap at the Two Brothers Roundhouse

Ebel Weiss 22oz weizen glass tap $8

A- Hazy golden-yellow-orange body with a fluffy white head of 1-1/2 fingers with great retention and stick.

    S-Classic banana/clove and a little lemon

T- As the aroma suggests. Lots of banana and clove with hints of lemon and some more bubblegum.

    A-Creamy, medium body.

O- Great classic take. Very well done. Super nice on a hot summer afternoon at the brewery after soccer.

I also reviewed the brewpub/restaurant. For those interested, it’s linked below.

Prairie Spicy Pickle Monster Sour Kettle Ale, 5.3% ABV; 3.7 overall

Pours an effervescent gold with a thumb of fast falling cream colored head. No head retention or lacing

    S: Pickle Juice

T: Pickles, a little salt, even less heat& a little lemon up front. Some dryness as this warms, a little more spicyness & pickle juice, plus building heat & a little sweet orange. Finishes a little spicy, a little sour & with a little sweet orange

    MF: Light/medium body, slight carbonation

Delivers the promised flavors. I drink pickle juice occasionally. it is/was the old school Gatorade

Timber Ales Vanilla Maris BarleyWine ( English supposedly, not really ). 4.3 Overall 12.0% ABV

Pours an effervescent chestnut with 3 fingers of mocha colored head. Some head retention &
    lacing

    S: Dark fruit, brown sugar

T: Maple syrup, vanilla, dryness, Stroop Waffle Cookie & a little brown sugar up front, slight smokeyness & a kiss of coffee. Vanilla, brown sugar, figs as this warms, along with a kiss of coffee & Molasses. Finishes dry, warming, & chewy with Maple Candy Flavors

MF: Medium body, near zero/smooth carbonation & pretty damn warming. Gets a little sticky on the teeth

Tastes like a sugar overload breakfast, in a very good way. The ABV doesn't hide by any means

    cheers @micada

This next new beer for me is a pretty unique beer from Dovetail - their Rauchweizen - a smoked wheat beer that checks in at 5.2% ABV. This is described as a smoked version of their hefeweizen.

This one pours a dark burnished orange color. Cloudy, partially opaque with a thick frothy tan head on the beer. The head dissipates pretty steadily leaving a thin film of foam on top of the beer. The aroma on this is really unique because its got the smoked malts, campfire smoke, a bit of wood, but it also has the wheat and clove coming through even a bit of banana. I will say the smoke really dominates the aroma though so that is what you are going to get unless you really try to dig through it a bit.

Taste follows the nose with the smokiness on the nose dominating the flavor profile as I expected. Lots of smoke, campfire, and wood come through initially, but then as your palate adjusts to it, the wheat and clove come through on the back end. There is a slight earthy bitterness on the back end, but its mild. Feel is smooth and creamy, bright carbonation, with a somewhat drier finish.

I sent this one out to @TongoRad recently and he reviewed it I believe last week and didn't care for it all that much. I can definitely see that as there is a lot going on with this one and its pretty unique, but for whatever reason I am digging it. I could see this being a real favorite in the autumn months when the temps turn cooler ... This is exactly the kind of beer I want to drink by the fire pit.

Thanks again for sending it, and I do think it works as a concept. But for whatever reason I did get a noticeable astringent/ overattenuated quality on the finish that more or less "broke the spell" that the beer was trying to cast. Who knows, it just might have been the wrong beer on the wrong day for me.

Late to join the thread this weekend... Busy day with just brief time on the computer, although I did find time to review 2 new to me beers.

Early this afternoon I opened this one:

    Hacker-Pschorr Weissbier
    ABV: 5.5%
    IBU: 20

This beer is currently the #7 Hefeweizen on this site.

Can stamped with 01.20.2022 4 and 01.20.2021 R. I'm assuming, then, that it was canned on Jan 20, 2021, and destined for export to the USA, given the American mm dd yyyy format.

Aroma is strongly banana with more than a hint of spice and fresh bread.

Appearance brings a golden amber body from the front, changing to a golden yellow with a backlight. Nicely carbonated. The pour develops a tall slightly off-white head, thick and creamy, with excellent retention. It forms a domed top and leaves thick lacing as it recedes.

The taste has more clove than the aroma, and the banana is in the background. There is a tanginess in the middle that lingers into the aftertaste as well. The combination is a refreshing beer, but not up to its rank. Perhaps it is suffering due to being canned. The final pour did give some yeast sediment, so it seems it was can-conditioned.

The body is moderate for the style and leaves a nice presence on the tongue.

Overall, as I stated above, an enjoyable hefeweizen, but this canned version is not up to being ranked #7 in the world, IMO.

Then, about 5 hours ago, I reviewed this one.

    Potosi Rosa Stiefel Grapefruit Hefeweizen
    ABV: 4.5%
    IBU: 8

There's been recent discussion on this site regarding the issue of women in brewing, sexual harassment in the craft beer industry, and other related issues. So, when I saw this one, I had to get it.

"Rosa Stiefel" is German for Pink Boots.

Rosa Stiefel Grapefruit Hefeweizen is a collaboration with the Pink Boots Society and Potosi Brewing of Potosi, Wisconsin. $2.00 Per Case goes towards the Pink Boots Society’s Scholarship Program to assist, inspire, and encourage women beer professionals through education. The timing seemed too right to pass up.

Aroma is strongly dominated by grapefruit. I can detect more behind the grapefruit, but the grapefruit swamps any hope of parsing out anything else. Not a particularly good start.

Golden yellow hazy body, heavily carbonated topped with a tall, white, thick head that recedes fairly quickly leaving no laving.

The taste is more varied than the aroma. The grapefruit is there, but more in a peer-level role, allowing the typical banana and spiciness to also assert themselves a bit. The result is a wonderfully bright, crisp, and complex beer. This one hits the spot. The smooth banana dances nicely with the crisp grapefruit in the mouth, with just a touch of spice.

The body is moderate, with some crispness from the carbonation.

Overall, an excellent summer beer. If you are looking for a typical hefe, this obviously is not that. And, the aroma had me a bit apprehensive that this was too over the top on the grapefruit. But, it is not. It is extremely well done. If any of you BAs from this brewer's distribution footprint see this one around, I recommend you grab a 4 pack (or two).

Next up is a new brewery - new beer for me. This is 93 Octane - Hugger Orange Whip an American Orange Wheat Ale brewed with vanilla, lactose, and coriander.

Pours a mostly clear golden color - however there is a ton of sediment suspended in the beer. Lightly effervescent. Three finger white bubbly head forms on the beer and then collapses leaving just a thin layer of foam on top of the beer. Aroma comes across like a orange creamsicle as that vanilla and orange interplay on the aroma. But then the coriander come through giving it this odd spicy note that really clashes with the orange creamsicle aroma.

Taste again follows that same pattern - orange creamsicle comes across from the orange and vanilla overlaid on the wheat base, which is fine, but then you get the coriander and spiciness comes through and just clashes with the more sweet focused initial presentation. Fizzy, spritzy carbonation. Light and easy drinking.

Overall, I feel like the coriander with the orange/vanilla/lactose just doesn't work well together - its like this beer doesn't know what it wants to be. Can't say I'd ever want to drink this one again.

Good day BAs! Off to another NBS portion of NBW. Today's New Breakfast Beer:

Hockhocking from Jackie O’s Brewing. Received on 21/9/20 from Craftshack, San Diego, CA, for $ 22.49 (Including shipping) for 16.9 oz ($1.33/oz). Brown bottle stored at home at 42 degrees. Reviewed 20/6/21. Note that I use DD/MM/YY protocol.
Bottle dated “2017”. Served at 49.8 degrees in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. Final temperature 54.5 degrees.
    Appearance – 3.
First pour - Begins nearly colorless and clear, with only the faintest yellow hue.
Body – Pale straw (SRM 2), clear. When rear-lite, same. A lot of sediment occurs in the bottom of the bottle (a 500 mL wine bottle), but this remains packed through the first pour.
Head – Tiny (Maximum 1.3 cm, aggressive center pour), off white and fizzy, low density, short retention, diminishing to leave only a 0.15 mm ring of bubbles.
    Lacing – None.
Aroma – 4.25 – Weak grape and some acetic acid with a touch of Brettanomyces funk. No malt, no hops, no yeast.
Flavor – 4.25 – Begins slightly sour with acetic acid predominating. Some transitory grape flavors occur. No malt per se, no hops, no yeast. No ethanol (6.5% ABV, as marked on container) taste or aroma. Gastric warming does not occur. No dimethylsulfide or diacetyl. Ends with a bit of lactic acid.
Palate – 4 – Medium, watery, lively carbonation.
Final impression and summation: 4.25 Pretty good saison – not too funky and not too sour. A bit of the grape remains and both the acetic and lactic acids are well-balanced with the thicker wheaty body.

    Rating 4.15, rDev +2.5%

Welcome to New Beer Sunday #852 one and all. If I would have cracked this beer open Friday, it would be from the brewery (Une Anne / Hubbard's Cave) closest to my house. That all changed yesterday, as Printers Row Brewing, originally existing around said Chicago neighborhood, finally opened after a long wait due to the Rona closures. Can't wait to visit this week, perhaps today. A second brewery nearby is also busy at work to open their first ever tap room. I'll post an update in the Great Lakes thread later this week when there is more public news to share on that front.

This beer was sold as an Imperial IPA. It was formerly brewed under the Une Annee brewery six years ago, but switched over to Hubbard's Cave for this release.

    Hubbard's Cave Hopsurd

    Can Notes:
Hazy imperial IPA, 1 Pint, 8.5% ABV, canned 4/20/21.

Appearance: Missed the hazy part, so poured into a large tulip before reading the can for the review. Multiple pours, the first large pour netted slightly hazy orange base, bright white head leaving marginal lacing, and visible medium carbonation. 3.75

    Aroma:
Very tropical, light dankness, pineapple leads, tangerine grapefruit. Bold and pleasant, sticky sweet. 4.0

    Taste:
Consistent with the aroma, but sweetness more muted, taste is danker with bitterness balancing out the sweet flavors and texture. Pinneaple and tangerine still lead, though as this warms, lemon, grapefruit, almost shandy takes over. Don't recall such a pronounced shift in taste after say 10 minutes after opening. Nice. 4.0

Mouthfeel: Medium body, creamy, light fizzy carbonation, sweetness tingles the tongue at times, the bitterness offers a fight but overall edges sweet, light dryness, drinks way under the ABV at first, though strength comes on after you're halfway through. Easy clean finish, enjoyable drinking. 4.25

    Overall:
I typically don't seek this style, but overall rating to style this lives up to it and exceeded my expectations. Complex and delicious flavors, bold aroma, feels great, packs the solid ABV punch toward the end. A truly pleasurable drinking experience. Well done Hubbard's Cave! 4.0

Not sure what direction, literally, I will go later today, contingent on the weather. If I head East, I will join you with a wheat beer or two. If I go West, it will be to a bottle shop, and I may crack open one of those before the day is done. Hoping for no rain.

[IMG] Poured into a 16 oz Nordic pint glass canned on 5/19/21. Pours a hazy yellow with a half finger sticky white head that leaves thin streaks of lace with nice retention. 4.5

Aroma is papaya, mandarin, slightly dank marijuana, peach, and apricot. 4.25

Taste follows mandarin, papaya, marijuana, peach, and apricot really well balanced. 4.25

Mouthfeel is above medium, a tad sticky but not dry, soft gentle carbonation, and at 8.5% really easy going down. 4.25

Overall this is a really nice NEDIPA, but honestly I was expecting even more. I think this brewery at one point put out some of the best NEDIPAs I have ever had and this one is just good. Thanks @jzeilinger for this can. Enjoy your day all you hop guzzling Dad’s! 4.25

Good morning NBS/NBW and Happy Fathers day to all who are. Thanks @Roy_Hobbs for hosting this week. This week has been way to busy at work, but thankfully not that hot, I am thankful for that. Taking a quite back yard respit this morning.
Todays offering is from Allagash, the talented team put together a real treat.
    Do good
    Be well

    Coolship La Mûre

    Lambic - Fruit | 6.3% ABV

    Allagash Brewing Company
    Portland, Maine

    4.19/5 rDev -2.3% | Average: 4.29
    look: 4 | smell: 4.25 | taste: 4.25 | feel: 4.25 | overall: 4

Poured from a 500 ml bottle dated Dec, 19, 2019 into the test glass.
A - Tangerine colored backdrop, a bit opaque. Active carbonation, with the tiniest of spheres, reminds me of fine Champagne in that regard. A well assembled tight knit cap lasts through the entire experience.
S - Oak, some tannin, clearly blackberries, but as described by the brewer, blackberries in many phases. Ripe and fresh, as well as reduced its quite something. There is a leather and musty basement thread as well.
T - A mixed grain fresh bread, with blackberry jam, Some dusty rine, some green apple, and green grape skin, layers of Oak barrel with the thread being largely citrus.
M - Medium in body, soft on the palate, superbly balanced between tart and sweet. Again the barrel treatment adds a bit of tannin, matched with oaky soft vanilla.
O - An outstanding offering from one of the best at this style, there areso many layers to this. The texture is simply delightful. The barrel treatment and the fruit are happily harmonious. A treat worth seeking out

First New Beer this Sunday: Dogs vs Shinbi, a recurring collaboration between Pipeworks and Beer'd.

Check your biases at the door:
Beer'd (my favorite brewery in CT, and to which I have strong ties)
    Guava (Yo soy Miami)
DDH (give me all the hops)
NE IPA (great when done right)
Pipeworks (they make excellent modern IPAs)
    Dogs (duh)

So with all of my biases disclosed: this is a great, if not quite world-class, NE-style IPA.

Both on the nose and the palate, the guava tends to blend with and complement the Mosaic and Citra, such that it doesn't particularly stand out on its own - although you can notice it here and there as you take each sip, imparting a slight fruity acidity, the occasional punch of sweetness, and a very restrained earthy pungency.

The emphasis is still on the hops, and the combination of Mosaic, Citra, and Simcoe results in a complex melange of bright kitchen herbs and both tropical and citrus fruit. Mango, guava, pineapple, orange, cream, and mild dankness. Low to low-medium bitterness.

The body is really well executed for the style: creamy and mouth-filling, fuller-bodied than the modest 6.5% ABV would normally suggest.

I like it a lot, and I'm not regretting the purchase in any way. I also feel it falls just short of its potential; just a bit more guava presence, and perhaps a little more sweetness, would really elevate this to a new level.

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/30321/377812/?ba=Roguer#review
    4.13 / +2.5%

Would you look at that; a +rDev! My partner and I are meeting some friends at Beer'd second location later today for some beers and some Mystic cheese. :grinning:

Yeah, but my wife's brother-in-law let our toddler age daughter stay in the room while he watched a horror movie on cable that had snakes (or something - we never did get a straight answer) coming out of the toilet.

We were not aware (wife's sister was baby sitting her) and it took us a long time to figure out why she suddenly wanted Mom to always go in the bathroom with her. This fear of the bathroom lasted for several years. I suspect Riley is very much an exception. I know I would recommend anyone experiment to see if their kid is, too.

    Good evening everyone ...
after a recently finished evening ...
Yesterday six cars, twenty-five old friends, about 70 km from Ostia towards Latina, to celebrate the TEN years of our friends from the Birrificio Pontino.

This is the tap list with rotating biire (drunk all and some more times)

    - PSYCO DISORDER - Lemon Neipa (4.5%) - the celebratory beer of the 10th birthday! (extra juicy, velvety, slightly bitter and very fruity)

    - CALAVAERA - Mexican Lager (5%) - beer of the "historic" line, with liviti from Mexico City ... a light and spicy lager

    - MAGIC CIRCE - Session Ipa (4%) - in great shape, crunchy, fragrant and fruity, lively, fruity and drinkable sparkle ... the one I liked the most together with the usual Black Swan (below)
-BRAIN DAMAGE (Peach and Mango ed.) - New England Ipa (7%) - fruity, sweet, quite creamy, medium body ... lots of fruit, sweet note and veiled amrognolo finish

    - SPACCAPALATO - West Coast IPA (6.8%) - old recipe conceived in collaboration with the great Mike Murphy of Lervig, soft, slightly biscuit entry, then the bitterness of the hops is released

HOP MACHINE - Double Dry Hopped Ipa (7%) - Citra, Galaxy and Simcoe, quite opaque. Fruity the right, with a bitter finish that drives me crazy. I also got a 5L keg for the Team of the Nation game today at the European Football Championships.

    - RUNNER ALE - American Ipa (4.8%) - always from the "flagship" line, drinkable, dry, old school, no frills

    - BLACK SWAN - Imperial Stout (9.5%) - on pump, with cocoa beans (predominant flavor), vaniaglia, coconut coffee from a local roaster ... my last four before leaving last night ... or better... just now.

And besides great beers, great party atmosphere
