wow, modern american beer culture saddens me. I had an 08 BCBS while waiting in line for KBS and thought it still was pretty overly assertive with bourbon flavor although it was good. I had a fresh BCBS a few years back when it still sat on shelves collecting dust and couldn't even finish it b/c it tasted more like whiskey than it did beer. Damn, can you appreciate complexity and subtelty in beer and still be a BA?

Founder's didn't originate the BA stout - Greg Hall did at Goose Island in '92 to celebrate their 1,000th batch. Nonetheless, both are amazing.

Ah, very nice. I stand corrected. Both BCBS and KBS are early examples of the style.

This is exactly what I've been wondering too.

Yes, you can still be a BA, some people think that BCBS is too bourbon forward (you) some think it's just right (me).

I was under the impression that's what BA was about, forming your own opinion and discussing it. I didn't knock KBS at all, in fact I thought it was f--king great, I just said to me, BCBS is favorable. I don't think that means there's any reason current beer culture should sadden you (even though there are a lot of reasons the current culture has gotten sad)...

    It's only because you're over-generalizing.

Both were good. 2011 blew my skirt up more though. Probably cause I have had a lot of other amazing beer since then.

This is quite possibly my favorite year of it except for '08. Great balance and oak aroma and flavor.

I liked the one that I was able to have which I believe was a 2009. I am still searching high and low for the 2011.

This 2012 KBS is a great beer, I think it is well balanced and the ABV is not overpowering at all, barely noticeable. I have had other BA beers with lower ABVs that have had a lot of heat, I was surprised this KBS wasnt hot at all.

That's an excellent idea. I have one bottle from 2010 and a couple from 2011, and I was also planning to do a vertical tasting. I'll be sure to post my thoughts on your thread in the cellaring forum.

I wouldn't say there have been many harsh words. In fact it seems there are at least as many people on this thread who prefer BCBS over KBS than vice-versa. Some people prefer the more assertive bourbon character of BCBS, some prefer the balance of KBS. I love both but would have to slightly favor KBS.

Ok i guess i blew it out of proportion lol

This will be my first time having KBS..and ive loved everything else ive had from them. Their CBS was outstanding and Backwoods Bastard is my favorite beer. I wasnt able to get Better Half but maybe ill get it next year.

Long story short. Im sure i will fall in love with KBS

Drinking this now in a Chimay Chalice. Not too cold.

More sweet dark chocolate this year with a decent amount of bitter espresso. The vanilla and oak are tamed and balanced like always. Smells a little hotter than the taste. Smooth, creamy, lush mouthfeel.

    In the past 3 years, I preferred 2010 > 2011 > 2012.

I would save one for that moment, but fortunately I didn't start working until 4pm today so I was able to get to the store beforehand.
