June 27th is the last day. I am crushed. Denver beer scene will never be the same.

Do yourself a favor and go drink a bottle of 21st Anniversary beer made by Lost Abbey before I go buy them all.

The King's Blend by Westbound is good also and comes in a magnum.

I'm definitely in shock. My heart goes out to Chris, Steve, and Al Black + the entire Falling Rock crew and family. Falling Rock is an irreplaceable beer institution. Denver will never be the same.

Thanks for 24 years of awesome beers and good times!

    Howdy Everyone,

    First – The Negative
I’m really not sure how to say this but we here at the Falling Rock have made the difficult decision to close. I know this may come as a shock to those of you out there, but this last year has just been the icing on the cake of the last 5 years. A year-long construction project that caused a 30% drop in sales, changes in the neighborhood that have impacted our business negatively (like crazy late-night crowds and decreased office usage), continued increasing competition from our suppliers, challenges in finding kitchen staff plus rapidly increasing costs all have added up to a financially unsustainable situation. After consultations with our landlords (who have bent over backwards during COVID to help us and have been amazing for the last 24 years to work with) we have all decided that us closing will allow both parties to move on without causing financial harm to either one.

    Second – The Nitty-Gritty
The Falling Rock will close on Sunday June 27th in the evening (not sure of what time, we’re going to play it by ear). We will be closed on Monday June 21st & Tuesday June 22nd in order to sort through items and get ready for a whirlwind 5 days of selling off the beer, booze, and the stuff on the walls (Note: all of the Neons and current Taphandles are going back to the Breweries/Distributors that own them, I will be at the bar after 1pm on Wednesday-Friday for this purpose). Tentatively the hours on Wednesday and Thursday will be 5-10pm, Friday 5-10pm, Saturday Noon-10pm, and Sunday Noon-? The Beer Cellar (most of which can be checked out on fallingrock.com/products ), lots of remaining T-shirts, Signage, old Tap Handles that the breweries no longer use will all be sold off. COME AND GET IT. If anybody has ideas of what to do with the bottle collection, I’m all ears, I’d really hate to just recycle them.

    Finally – The Positives
We can’t possibly thank all of you enough for the last 24 years of the Falling Rock. To the amazing Falling Rock staff (some of whom have been here since day 1 or very nearly so) that truly have been our family here in Denver, Thank You for everything you did to make our vision of what a beer bar could be. We changed the Denver Beer Scene and completely changed GABF Week. When we opened the Falling Rock in 1997, bars/restaurants participation surrounding the GABF was almost exclusively hanging a banner out front welcoming the GABF crowd and selling buckets of Sam Adams for a discounted price. Falling Rock was not having ANY of that. We called up some breweries and had some special kegs sent in. In 1998 we started having a schedule of special Tappings and by 1999 we decided to expand the week by having a Kick-off Tapping on Monday. To ALL of the breweries that supplied us with amazing beers for the last 24 years, we were so honored that you would consider us worthy of pouring your most prized beers, Thank You. To all of the local brewers that supplied us with amazing beers to serve, hung out after your shifts and became such good friends at the same time, Thank You. Special thanks to Crooked Stave Artisanal Distributing for all the organization and supply of interesting, amazing, small Breweries from all over to choose from. Another Big Special Thanks goes out to the Elite Brands crew for keeping me in beer for all these years. This last year has been horrific and Falling Rock would not have made it through without the support of Vinnie and Natalie Cilurzo of Russian River Brewing keeping us supplied in Blind Pig and Pliny the Elder kegs. I know it took a lot of extra effort to keep the kegs rolling to us, but it helped keep us alive, Thank You. To All of you that bought beer from the Cellar Sale and donated to the Gofundme fund. You got us through the winter and gave us a shot at surviving, I’m sorry that we didn’t ultimately succeed but you have our undying gratitude, Thank You.

    Love & Eternal Thanks
    Chris, Steve, & Al Black
Plus all the Falling Rock Staff

I just read this on Facebook. I was only there once, with Mentor, a BA who passed several years ago. This is SAD news for those who frequented often.

This sucks. I lived in Denver for about twenty years having moved away recently, but enjoyed many a brew there with friends. A great loss not just to Denver or even Colorado but to the entire beer community! A toast in memorial is needed!

Met lots of great folks there and drank plenty of great beer. Maybe 2.0 will come....?

So many memories. PtY with my dad, pre-games before Rockies, GABF after parties, my bachelor party, date nights with my wife, the list goes on and on. I never thought I would see this day.

Terrible news. I’ve always wanted to go. Heard so many great things. I’m actually going to be in Denver for the first time ever on Monday and Tuesday. Bummed.

Some of my greatest memories of being a professional brewer were at FRTH. Not only the amazing events where I got to see hundreds of people enjoy the fruits of my labor. But the quiet times drinking a beer with Chris and Beth and whatever beer rep or brewer happened to be there. A truly great place and truly great people. Sad news but I will always remember the good times there.

They'll definitely be missed. Crazy to think how gutsy creating a bar like that was back in the 90's. Back when I lived off the Englewood light rail I used to end up there almost every week. The amount of crazy taps they were pulling (back when that was VERY unusual) is still pretty incredible. I remember thinking their staff was pretty surly early-on, but as time passed I grew to appreciate it. It was a little bit like busting your balls and once you "got it" they were the nicest people in the world. It's a really similar vibe to the halls I've been to in Belgium. Once they know what you're about - they'll go out of their way to make you have a great time.

In the last few years I found myself in that area fewer and fewer. Basically just during GABF and maybe one other trek each year. With so much opening in RiNo and other suburbs, I just don't go to LoDo much anymore. Other places I used to frequent down there (like the Celtic Tavern and such) also disappeared, so there were even fewer reasons to go.

Hopefully this isn't the end of the line for the concept. I feel like they could still succeed in a different environment.

I’m hoping Chris and company stay in Denver and do something else somewhere else. Downtown is a tough place to be and with all the breweries moving into RINO no one really goes downtown anymore.

I stopped in Falling Rock today. They have La Folie 2013 on tap and a Westbound/FR ipa on tap. Sounds like Chris is going to get all his bottles/kegs organized and brought over on Wednesday so they’re gonna go out with a bang! Sad to see it go but glad they’re going out on their own terms. I’d hate for it to be bought out and be run into the ground.

Sad news. End of an era. I was able to go while visiting Denver in 2015, and always told others to go if I heard they were visiting Denver. So many iconic beer bars have closed in this last year in a half. Never thought FRTH would be one of them.

I was only there once. It was for a BA Denver pub crawl on December 07th, 2013. Falling Rock was the last official stop, but a few of us diehards stumbled up to River North after wards...

Very sad to learn of this news, and the realization I'll never get to stop in there again. Loved everything about Falling Rock, and always recommended it to friends when they were rolling to Denver. Wish them all the best in whatever is next.

Haven't posted here in years, but I had to share my thoughts. I spent a few years working about 3 blocks from Falling Rock, and I was there for lunch and/or happy hour numerous times a week. I consider myself lucky to have had the opportunity to call Falling Rock my "Cheers" for several years.

During Covid lockdown, when Denver allowed to-go beer sales, I drove down a couple of times a month to try to do whatever I could to try and help them survive. At times I wondered if they would be able to make it. But once we got to May and businesses opening fully and the Rockies being back to half capacity, I assumed we were in the clear. I guess I was wrong.

I've lost friends and family members before, and while I don't intend to trivialize the loss of human life, I feel very much like I'm losing a friend. I was able to go by Sunday and say goodbye to Chris and the staff that was still there working and those that had dropped by to say goodbye as well.

There will never be another Falling Rock.
