This is likely good news for all of the NY breweries operating under a Farm Brewery License (about 200 breweries use that type of license).

In recently talking to a friend that is the head brewer at such a brewery, the % requirement of NY grown hop/malt requirement has increased over the years. It is moving to 90% in 2024. Having some unique hop varieties available other than mostly traditional C hops will help.

Sadly no consumer cares if their beer uses hops that are resistant to pests and disease...

If they can make them smell like passion fruit and weed however....

This is seriously such a cool thing for NY and I'm very excited to taste the fruits of these labors.

Sure, I love the idea of NY varietal hops. Still, the food science side of this is really exciting. Other places are doing the same research, so there is much to be optimistic about.

The local angle is cool too.

New York State maintained a hop variety development program at it’s Agricultural Experiment Station in Geneva NY, headed by Prof. J. D. Harlan, in the 1930’s and '40's in a failed effort to revive it's hop industry. That is where Brewer’s Gold hops were developed for US growers. The Experiment Station maintained several hopyards, one in Waterville into the late ‘40’s.

Google recently "upgraded" their webpages and totally destroyed hours of work on my sites (this fuckin' concept of having to constantly change shit forcing people to learn totally new programs drives me crazy) but the fragments and sad remains, deleted images, incorrect margins, tiny jpegs, empty white space, etc., of what's left of my New York State Post-Repeal Hop page can be found at https://sites.google.com/site/jesskidden/hops/new-york-state-hops-post-repeal

A very cool place, for it’s research history. Thanks for all the articles, good reading for tonight.

For those interested in architecture, there is an octagon house at the NE corner of the campus. For those interested in beer, there are several worthy breweries within a few miles. BigaLICe and Ardennes are new.
