Burrs are forming on the Cascades and Goldings. I have no other varieties.

The leaves are getting a lot of small (and some larger) holes in them and I spotted a leaf hopper today. Is there a good remedy for them once they've become adults?

Mine are all 10 ft and I've topped em. Burrs are set. We have been getting PNW weather lately and the hops are loving it. Pics later

I have no experience with leaf hoppers but in past years (not this year so far) I have had issues with Japanese Beatles chewing on my hop plants leaves. I then purchase a Japanese Beatle trap and that works for me:

I'm curious as to why you topped yours at 10'?

I don't have the capability to do drop lines, I have 10ft poles the bines climb. HOA stuff.

imidacloprid. check your local hardware or garden store and check out the active ingredient, lots of stuff there has it in it. Sevin would probably work as well, and it would have a lot more knockdown that the imidacloprid.

The leafhoppers aren't what's causing holes in the leaves though. Whatever's doing that, Sevin will kill as well

If additional applications are indicated, how long before harvest should they be stopped?

Sevin (carbaryl) is NOT labeled for hops. So legally, you're not supposed to use it on commercial hops. So there's no official answer to this, but for leafy vegetables for example, it's 14 days before harvest when the last application can be made, according to the label. It's as low as 3 days for other crops.

    http://fs1.agrian.com/pdfs/Sevin_Brand_4F_Carbaryl_Insecticide_Label2g.pdf

I don't *think* there would be an issue but again, this is not a labeled crop for Sevin, and I've never done it, so it's a use at your own risk kind of deal

WhEn in doubt, double the days to harvest, see if you can get a crop with some damage, ie thresh hold, or use a product rated for hops.

    thank you @Merlyn

    Appreciate the input, all. :beers:
The holes have been coming on for a couple weeks now. To be honest, I've only seen one leafhopper and wondered if there were some in a smaller stage that were snacking, and I just couldn't see them. I'll take a pic if the wind lays down before dark.

Hops coming along nicely for 1st year (at my house). These were from Great Lakes Hops, they were all a season old when I got them ( if I understood them correctly).

The Hallertau MF on the left have some really light colored bines coming up. From what I can find on the internet, it looks like iron deficiency?

I’ve tried to acidify the soil to aid in nutrient uptake.

@BetaAcid I don't know about pale bines (although the color can vary between varieties and gets darker as they mature), but it's good to see your Cashmere perked up after getting a drink. Kind of like me on a hot day after that first sip of a cold one

Yeah they made a comeback just like you and @GormBrewhouse said they would. The Hallertau bines that are pale have some leaves that basically albino. We got a bunch of rain one week; it was after that, that I noticed the pale and albino bines/leaves.

    Tagging @Merlyn once again.........
I bought this (can be returned if not needed):
    Bayer Advanced Complete Insect Killer
Lawns and along building foundations only
    Imidacloprid 0.72%
    Beta-cyfluthrin 0.36%
    Mix rate 0.5 oz/gal

    Available for delivery by Monday:
Bayer Fruit, Citrus & Veg Insect Control
    Fruit/Nut trees, vegetables, berries/grapes
    Imidacloprid 0.235% 0.5 oz/gallon
    Mix rate 0.5 oz/gal

Dilution for the Fruit & Veg insect Control is one-third of the Complete Insect Killer, which makes me wonder if the insect Killer would be too strong if mixed as instructed.
The Complete Insect Killer also has beta-cyfluthrin, which limited interweb searching suggests is used on hops.

I could dilute the Complete Insect Killer to get to the lesser concentration suggested for the Citrus & Veg insect Control, or I could order the Citrus & Veg and have it delivered Monday.

    Thoughts?

We use pure crop1, trifecta, as well as various biological teas as preventatives. Pure crop and trifecta are blends of seed oils and essential oils
