Friends , foreigners, countrymen & countrywomen , I bid you salutations and greetings on this American Independence day weekend, aka NBW 50. Tomorrow is Independence Day and the highly celebrated New Beer Sunday 854. Veteran and novice posters are all equally welcome, it is FREE to participate. HUZZAH!!!

Time to throw off the shackles of our oppressors and enjoy our freedom of choice in beers. Give us your opinions on the sights, smells, appearance, flavor and overall opinion of your new beer (s). Your beer is most certainly taxed so give us your representation of this brew. Remember, taxation without representation is not freedom. Do your civic duty to celebrate your beer freedom by posting your thoughts. The beer can be a recent introduction or stalwart that has been around for years, we don’t care, just let us know what you think about it. And, if you can, also post a picture or two so we can see this fine new brew. Looking forward to reading about your new beer this weekend!

    Great start @WunderLlama
I will answer the call. This was a late one last night (ahem, early this morning), but I didn't take a pic, so I didn't start the thread.
A friend transplanted from CA to New England was kind enough to send me some Trillium. WhooHooo.

    Public Garden

    Can stamped 04/13/21
Pours a hazy swirl of bright gold, fluffy white cap rises nearly 3 inches, slowly retreats. Good retention, slight lacing.
Nose starts with a citrus wash, moves directly to mango and pineapple. Then some mild grass that is herbal and earthy.
Flavors follow the nose with more of a melange of all of the flavors, citrus blends in with tropical nicely. A light crackery grain note nod gives it more depth.
Mouthfeel is spectacular. Fluffy, light, almost tingly with carbonation.
    Overall, a wonderful NEIPA.

And this little piggy went to market!

Firstly, I want to wish all of you American BA’s a Happy Independence Day!

I was quite surprised to see at my local Retail Beer Distributor a new beer from Sterling Pig: “Prague Hog Czech style lager (yet made in the USA)”. I personally call this sort of beer a Bohemian Pilsner.

I went to the Sterling Pig website to learn a bit more about this beer:

    “ABV: 5.3%

    Hops: Czech Saaz

    Availability: Rotational

The Prague Hog is for days when you need something fresh and crisp. We’d describe this well-balanced Czech Style Pilsner as earthy, clean and satisfying.”

Well, there is some information there but…

Let’s drink and see what we shall see.

Served in my Polish Pilsner glass:

    Appearance:

Straw yellow colored with a BIG rocky white head.

    Aroma:

Wow! There is a notable and pleasant combination of hop aroma (herbal, spicy, and lemon-like) and rich malty aroma.

    Taste:

The flavor follows the nose with notable hop flavors of herbal, spicy and lemon-like accompanied with a full, rich malty flavor of rustic white bread crust. There is a moderate bitterness.

    Mouthfeel:

Medium bodied with a pleasing dry finish.

    Overall:

This beer is a very good - excellent Bohemian Pilsner with flavors very well in balance between the complex hop flavors and the full, rich malt flavor.

I find that all too often that US craft breweries who brand their beers as being Bohemian/Czech Pilsners are really producing German Pilsners but in this instance Sterling Pig has nailed this beer: a true Bohemian Pilsner.

Another high quality Pilsner to join the others in SEPA.

    Na Zdravi!

Thank you, @WunderLlama, for the most excellent start to NBW.
My wife got me a subscription to a beer club, and I'm finding I like it a lot. I get ten beers from five breweries each month, often styles that have been under-appreciated by me. Case in point: a dunkel lager, Moondoor Dunkel, from Wibby Brewing.
Mahogany color, small light tan head that retains well.
Roasted malt aroma, chocolate, a little coffee. Herbal hops.
Chocolate/cocoa taste, a hint of coffee.
    Medium-bodied, dry.

This is a collaboration beer from The Brew Kettle and Duclaw
poured from a can dated 3/16/21
Pours dark brown very little head and no retention
There is a funky almost off putting aroma of moldy or fermented peanut butter or wet oak. It over whelms the roasted caramel. It might be the bourbon barrel influence.
Taste is a different story, really nice peanut butter flavor, roasted malt and a bit of caramel, I did not get a lot of bourbon but it's there.
mouthfeel is on the thin side, a little prickly up front but mostly creamy, no alcohol burn to speak of and a nice lingering peanut butter finish.
Overall it's pretty easy drinking, peanut butter is the most dominating flavor, aroma was weird but did not affect the taste. You can tell it's been barrel aged. I liked it,

I’ve got a XXX bomber I’ve been staring at in my beer fridge for 3 years - and it stares back at me. If it was in a 12 oz format, I’d have probably had 20 bottles by now.

My relationship with bombers is definitely a love/heavy dislike thing - love the beer, have a heavy dislike for the format - essentially two beers of those bruiser impy stouts/porters is hard on an old beer nerd.

This one is for you, @FBarber! I will save a bottle to ensure you can experience drinking this beer! New Glarus Brewing Lots o' Peach 21. The color is beautiful amber-brown, with copper highlights. The smell is strong with fresh peaches, along with sweet candy. The flavor is like a bushel of fresh peaches, quite sweet, full of funk, a bit sour, and tastes like peach candy. The mouthfeel is quite syrupy, vivacious, and champagne-like. Overall, this beer fits right in with the rest of the New Glarus Brewing fruit beers, which are my favorite of the style!

    Good afternoon NBW
I did some beer shopping today, but didn’t find anything I was seeking. I usually leave the store with something and today it's Modela Chelada Limon y Sal
    [IMG]

24oz can stamped BB JULY 2021 poured into a goblet at fridge temp 3.5% ABV. The beer pours hazy light amber with nearly white head. The head recedes to a pencil thin ring and tiny island. No lacing. The aroma is predominantly lime juice. The taste is salted lime juice with a hint of malt body. Minimal bitterness. The mouthfeel is thin to medium bodied with average carbonation and a slick finish due to the salt. Overall, very refreshing. Not something I would purchase routinely at the single price, but it has its place.

    Cheers all!

Tomorrow is usually a big day in our house. We live on Main Street and our road gets closed for the parade. Always lots of family and friend coming and going. With the parade canceled last year we’re really excited for tomorrow. I hate crowds but for a day I can deal with it cause it makes everyone so happy. Calm before the storm and beautiful weather so I’m sitting out back listening to the birds, enjoying another beer I brought back from vacation.

I had hoped to get to this brewery but didn’t work out this visit. Maybe next time, luckily I found them in the store.

Black Flannel - Smoak (3.3% polish style smoked beer)

This one is a very light colored beer, like watered down straw color. It has a really nice fluffy white and lingering rocky head. Little splotches of lacing cling to the glass where the initial head was. Huge plus is that it is crystal clear.

The nose is a very interesting, I expected mostly smoke but was caught off guard. There is a really nice floral earthy hop aroma first that is backed up by a hefty dose of smoke. There is also a nice dose of bread and wheat.

The taste has a nice bite to it that I was not expecting from the nose. There is almost a lemon citrus like refreshing taste to it at first. Then the smoke, hops and wheat malt hit.

Mouthfeel is excellent, effervescent and lively come to mind. Very well carbonated without being overdone. Incredibly clean feel and nothing lingers, except the slightest hint of smoke and it’s so pleasant. Low to almost no bitterness.

This beer really blew me away. First I had no idea it was only 3.3% until I opened it. Second it’s just so perfectly balanced I’m every way. I still have their marzen to try and this has made me really looking forward to it. I really hope to get to this brewery next time we’re up there.

Thanks @WunderLlama for kicking things off. Have a slightly different perspective on the holiday, as my English Grandmother would host us on this day referred to somewhat jokingly, somewhat seriously as "Traitors Day". In her honour, and in preparation of England's match today, I picked up this Barley Wine to celebrate and commemorate.

Also, wanted to mention @Roguer 's side by side review of the 2019 and 2020 FW Anniversary offerings late last weekend. Really loved the 2019, can't wait to try the 2020 later this year. My offering for today, a British Barley Wine.

    J. W. Lee's Harvest Ale (Matured in Sherry Casks)

    Bottle Notes:
Brewed in 2017, 9.3 oz, 11.5% ABV, Barley Wine Style Ale. Harvest Ale.

Our limited edition barley wine is made but once a year. It's made with the first hos to be harvested and fine British malt. It's traditionally brewed to a high original gravity and fermented using our excellent Cerevisiae yeast. Each year's brew brings different flavours which then evolve as the mature. The result is an excellent limited edition full bodied beer.

Appearance: Bottle sitting at room temperature at Binny's for god knows how long, refrigerated since I purchased a few days ago. Light brown colour, creamy tan white head leaves firm ring around the base and light body covering. significant floaters / sediment visible throughout the base. 3.5

    Aroma:
Predominate is the sherry. Mostly pleasant with a strong firm aroma, caramel malt, plums, raisins, cardboard, medium plus strength. 3.75

    Taste:
Sherry leads, somewhat pleasant. Fruity, grapes, raisins and plums. Get some cardboard as well, not sure how well this bottle was kept prior to purchase. Caramel malt emerges into the pour, the fruit sweetness is well incorporated. 3.5

Mouthfeel: Thin to medium somewhat creamy body, no carbonation. Sweet overall but mostly balanced. Slight alcohol warmth short of a burn as I'm drinking, this is potent beyond the 11.5%, glad it's under 10 oz. Light plum raisin aftertaste. 3.25

    Overall:
I understand this is a classic barley wine, and perhaps it wasn't kept well, maybe I should have aged it longer or perhaps it not suited to my tastes. I found this to be a good mostly enjoyable overall offering, but not one I would necessarily seek out again. 3.25

Til tomorrow, I wish you good beers and times!

    Crak - Perfect Motueka

New England IPA single-hopped with Motueka hops, from Italy (8%).

Pours a hazy, bright orange coloration with a small, fluffy head. Smells of light biscuity malt and citrus/stone fruit hops, with notes of lime and apricot.

Taste is a great balance of light biscuity malt and fruity, juicy, slightly floral and herbal hops, with citrus and lighter stone fruit and tropical notes of lemon, lime, apricot and papaya, as well as some herbal accents, with a hint of basil. Finishes with a very light bitterness and some lime and apricot lingering in the aftertaste. Soft mouthfeel with a medium body and carbonation.

I really love these single-hopped beers because sometimes they can surprise you or even give you a better understanding of a certain hop variety than in beers where they are mixed up with various other hops. This is certainly such a case and though those typical, zesty lime and lemon notes are certainly coming through distiunctly here, the hop seems a lot more versatile than I had previously thought, with some lighter stone fruit and tropical notes, as well as herbal accents.

Overall, this makes for a very interesting and enjoyable beer with a very nice body and mouthfeel as well.
