Well, just so you know that the top-fermented version will have more flavor.

Of course. You don't have to wait to reach the bottom of your glass!

Seems like I recently read that somewhere, but that info is pure bs.

Must be why so many breweries stopped using open fermenters - all the flavor was escaping! (Neighbors were happy, tho'...).

Grandpa swore by the Consumer Reports beer ratings. Though lower on CR's list of "Acceptable" beer, he was a regular Ballantine's lager (and Miller's High Life when he was outside the east coast) drinker. They both had a "pronounced beer flavor" after all, something he looked for in a beer.

Well, I did my best to 'motivate' JK here but needless to say I failed. Which kinda surprised me since this is basically his 'wheel house' but...

Maybe you would be willing to fill in for him here?

    Cheers!

We notice all these errors because we're beer nerds. The sad thing is the vast majority of info on the internet and news is similarly flawed. But most aren't schooled enough in every topic to spot the errors. There is no journalistic integrity anymore.

All other things considered in this article, I was scrolling for the comment about how, in the image below "First, what is a lager?" the faucet is touching the inside of the glass...

You may want to mentally prepare yourself for when you visit the Czech Republic and order a beer:

After thinking more about all of the errors in this article, and considering the "Fact Checking Policy' of mash.com which I linked above and copy here:

    "Fact Checking Policy

    Accuracy in reporting
We take our commitment to facts and accuracy very seriously. We take great pains to make sure we trace facts and information back to their original sources as often as possible, and include links to those primary and (if necessary) secondary sources for full transparency. If we can't support an assertion, we don't assert it.
    Read More: https://www.mashed.com/policies/?utm_campaign=clip"

This reporter/writer is merely collecting misinformation that is all over the internet and including it in his article. He easily could provide links to what he's saying (probably including BA if he wanted to search here), and is relying on this info as being scientifically correct regardless of how legitimate the source may seem to be. This just does to show that you shouldn't trust a lot of the stuff that you read online.

    Absolutely!

And unfortunately what you read in print media can often be problematic as well. Back in the day the folks in charge of journalism (e.g., editors) were fastidious that presenting accurate facts was the mode of operation. It is a different world now. :flushed:

We can't pin the entire (or even most of the) blame for the confusion between lager and Pilsener on the article author. Beer marketing professionals have specialized in questionable naming: all German or US Pilseners, Budweiser (Budweis/Budvar), Pabst Andeker (Andechs), Augsburger (Augsburg), and any number of US brewed Bavarian and Bohemian beers. A nod to Mount Carbon and then Yuengling for some adherence to truth, having marketed Bavarian Type Beer and to Blitz Weinhard with the '60s and '70s Bavarian Style Dark. Although those beers flavors didn't really measure up.

It depends. I posted in the SNPA tasting thread that, in the '80s, I preferred Sierra Nevada Porter to the SN Stout.

This 1948 Consumer Reports rating looks to be a lot better than any they've done in the last 20 or 30 years. (caveat: I didn't taste any of these until 20+ years later.) There are quite a few options there, and they give a short description of the flavor that could help a consumer find something that fits his/her taste preferences.

    Ha yeah they definitely do.

I did say they "kind of" got it right. Pretty much the only part that was right is that Pilsner is a subgroup of Lager.

    I do.
I'm not saying the author should be a master brewer or even have brewing experience.
But really, if you are getting paid to provide information about a very specific subject you should, in the very least, be an expert on that particular subject.

I write about beer related things.
    I don't write about:
    1. Chocolate
    2. Hot Dog Eating Contest
    3. Digital Food Orders
    4. Sonic, the fast food
    5. The Kitchen Brigade
    6. Coffee
    7. Flamin Hot Doritos
    8. Gordon Ramsay
    9. Burger King
    10. General Mills
    11. Aldi's
    12. Restaurant tipping
    13. Bobby Flay
    14. Steak n Shake
    15. Delivery App fees
    16. Chipotle
    17. Alton Brown
    18. Salt Bae (?)
    19. Fugu
    20. Airline food
    21. James Cordon
    22. Haagen Dazs
    23. Burger King (again)
    24. KFC
    25. Bourdain
    26. Coca Cola
    27. Ikea
    28. Chopped
    29. Chopped (again)
    30. Costco
    31. Pizza
    32. Chopped (again)
    33. Minnesota dining
    34. Top Chef
    35. Eggs
    36. Vegan Milk
    37. Long John Silvers*
    38. Costco (again)
    39. Waffle House
    40. etc etc etc.
I am not an expert on these subjects. I'll admit it. If I were to be getting paid to write about airline food, I might want to actually speak to someone who knows a lot about airline food.

Anyway, no excuse for this crap article.

I owe an apology to the writer. I previously suggested he stick to the Kardashians. He should stick to junk food.
    Cheers

    * "Why Lent is Big Business for Long John Silvers"

Now, why the hell would lent be big business for Long John Silvers? What could possibly be the reason? For the life of me, I can not see the fucking connection.
