Of the 4 local new-to-me beers I have to choose from in my refrigerator, I decided to make this an all-Waldmann NBW .

Waldmann Brewery & Wurstery - Dunkel
    ABV: 5.4%
    IBU: NA

Relatively subdued but rich aroma. Toasted bread. Chocolate. Nutty.

Deep, dark, ruby body. Clear with ample carbonation. 1 inch chocolate shake colored head, think with very fine bubbles and good retention.

Very good flavor. Repeated from the aroma is the toasted bread, in fact, a little roasty or even smoky. Underneath the roastiness are dark fruits (raisins), chocolate. The hops brighten it up a bit to offset the mild sweetness of the malts. Some spice. As with the taste, the flavor is rich, satisfying, and complex. A slight bitterness builds in the mouth as you drink.

Mouth feel is smooth and creamy.

Overall, another well-done beer from Waldmann in a German style. Rich, flavorful, roasty and toasty.

    L: 4.0 | S: 3.75 | T: 4.25 | F: 4.0 | O: 4.0 | Rating: 4.04

Since it's on tap at the brewery, I'd say it is not retired.

Earlier today we got in blueberry picking round two, our total this year...19 lbs. Were stocked for the weekend and we'll have frozen berries for parfaits, baking, smoothies, etc. all year long. On to the beer, for sure the last new beer of the weekend.

Schilling - Foeder Lagered Feldberg a 4.4% foeder lagered schwarzbier

This is a very pretty looking beer, I added to pictures to highlight the beautiful color when held up to light. On top of that it has great clarity, when held to light, and a nice dense initial head. It settles into big separate layers of chunky but very airy sustaining head which then dissipates a couple sips later. I've noticed all schilling beers I've had (4) share this characteristic, airy not super dense or long lasting heads. I wonder if this is consistent with the rest of their beers.

Initial smell is unsmoked tobacco, followed by licorice, cocoa, and subtle roast aromas. As it warmed up I got the smallest hint of oak, but I'm not entirely sure this isn't power of the label.

The taste is very similar if not identical to the nose. Its weird usually I feel like at least one new thing pops in or one of the aroma notes isn't there in the taste but not this one. Taste is very similar to the smell.

The one thing that is new that I didn't smell is a slight twang to it (I could be perceiving a strong initial drying sensation to it is sort of hard for me to nail down) when this beer first hits the tongue. It almost leaves that same sensation after the sip goes down. Very light bodied, expected at 4.4%, goes down very easy, a nice low bitterness that goes well with the roasty notes.

Overall a very solid beer IMO, good enough that I'd buy again if I ever came across it. The only thing that I'll say is I do not get anything that directly says this saw foeder. Maybe that is whats contributing the unique initial mouthfeel that I mentioned?? The only direct foeder indication is that minor aroma that again may just be power of suggestion from the label. I've been happy with every schilling beer I've tried, now send some more to NJ please!

Well I said no new beers....but of course that doesnt include cellar selections. So I decided to break out a beauty in honor of the BA @scream since this was his favorite brew. Its a banger...
Pelican Brewing Mother of All Storms
    Vintage 2018. ( gifted by @lingebrau)
Pours a very dark cola color, lighter around the edge. The head is fairly large and milk chocolate but obviously recedes quickly to a single ring.
Aroma is lots of coffee, dark chocolate, oak/wood, bourbon, fig/date.
Taste follows with bakers chocolate, creme caramel, raisin/dried dark fruits, black cherry, coffee, bourbon, brown sugar, vanillin from oak. Dark roasted malt- well done. Theres also a mildly present underlying bitterness that wraps a bow around the complexity. Massive,... and it just lingers...
The feel is medium/heavy but not too thick, bourbon burn is present at 14% but mostly in the throat and down the pipes. Almost flat after a few minutes but boy does this go down too easy.
A complex sipper that is worthy of all the praise. The cellar just made this better. Many of you know Im an IPA guy but the truth is I love all styles and appreciate the work that goes into crafting any brew. What a phenomenal brew and dare I say the best Ive had so far this year....and thats saying something. I hope @scream is reading this....somewhere.. Cheers![IMG]

This sounds like a rendering of the style that I love. I was drinking these dark lagers as a 20 year old in '71/'72. These were not tourist places, but often in very rural and isolated areas. (Germany, Austria, Slovenia) and further south in the then Yugoslavia (Croatia, Bosnia/Herzigovina ,Serbia) on towards Montenegro and the impossible Albania. These beers were loved and went very well with the wonderful rustic food in the infrequent inns and meeting places. They are the best dark lagers that I have ever had.

Taxman Brewing Company Bourbon Barrel No Sparge Imperial Golden Ale

12oz CANNED ON 06/07/21 poured into a stemless wine glass at just above fridge temp 12.5% ABV. The beer pours mostly bright, effervescent honey amber in color with sticky light khaki head. The head recedes to a thin cap and leaves plenty of lacing. The aroma is light bourbon and heavy malt with Belgian yeast adding a little spice. The taste is semisweet malt with plenty of fresh bourbon, barrel and oak complimented by yeasty spice. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with average carbonation and a somewhat dry finish. No flaws, not cloying, but the sheer amount of malt here keeps things a little slick. Overall, excellent.

Taxman does great things with bourbon barrels. Glad I have 3 more of these to enjoy or share. Cheers all!

Probably my last new beer for this weekend. Juice Sr. from Great Notion. A triple IPA with honey. Poured from fridge temp. Pours a nice golden yellow with quickly disappearing head. Nose is pine resin, grapefruit peel, honey, mint, damp wood, and a nice floral note. The taste is really smooth. Not overly bitter, but not overly sweet. More tropical notes start to creep in here. Papaya, mango. The grapefruit is there, but now it's the flesh of the fruit rather than the peel. Definitely getting a good dose of honey and pine. The aftertaste is relatively sweet (from the honey), and I'm also getting some brown sugar at this stage. This is a really interesting triple IPA since it's a bit hoppy and sweet at the same time. The ABV (over 10%) is very hidden - dangerously so. Overall, this is a fantastic beer. Cheers!

The big thing about this beer is the overall dull, malty taste. I didn't get much hop presence. It is close to what I would consider a "skunked" beer.

I drank this one straight from the bottle, so I'll have to scare up either a draft pour or another bottle poured into a drinking glass to revisit this one.

Light yellow body; decent carbonation; somewhat thin yet persistent head, creamy and leaving fingers and blobs of foam inside the glass. Light, sweet malt scent infused with floral notes. Exquisitely balanced beer flavors; soft and nuanced malt notes; delicately sweet; moderate hop bitterness that doesn't overpower the malt base; light berry and musk melon notes. Medium body; crisp with a mild overall warmth; soothes the palate.

Yes, indeed! This is a must try German styled pilsner. It is balanced and complex, easy drinking, and so satisfying.

    Served at 59° F; CANNED ON 01/10/21 GRP 110

This seems like a fine beer to end my Sunday with. It truly is an awesome beer, and I wouldn't mind more except 1) I don't have more - that I know of, and 2) I intend to go bicycle riding at o'dark 30 (beer calorie mitigation)...

    Good HI-time afternoon, Weekenders!

Today, I finally broke down and bought a gaming laptop. I've been here for two weeks, and I can't stand posting and browsing BA on my phone - and seeing as I don't have enough free time to enjoy the island after work, and everything on TV is over by 9 pm my time (no live sports at 3 am EST? :stuck_out_tongue: ), I needed something else to do other than a puzzle book. This will come in handy back home, anyway, as I've got an amazing new house, and this will untether me from my desktop computer.

Anyway, enough gab; time for some beer!

(As you can see, I also bought an acrylic wine glass, because I was tired of drinking beer and wine from red solo cups or straight from the bottle. )

Violet Underground is a collaboration between Firestone Walker and the Wild Beer Co. According to the description, it's one of seven collaborations based on the colors of the rainbow; FW/Wild drew violet, and so Violet Underground was born.

It's a wonderful marriage between what each brewer does so well and brings to the table. It's got the very rustic, grainy, almost dirty funk I expect from Wild Beer (not Brett, apparently, but very similar). It's got the oak influence and careful craftsman ship I expect from Firestone.

On the palate, it's extremely balanced between funk, sour, sweetness, fruit, and oak. (Or, as I mentioned in my review: Fruit, Flower, and Funk.) The melange produces a mild-to-moderate level of pucker: not for the complete wild/sour novice, but not unapproachable either.

The raspberries and flower petals aren't overly prominent, but contribute to the overall experience adequately. The mouthfeel is a bit thicker than expected for sub-6% ABV. While that really works for me, others may well prefer a more delicate feel for the style.

One note? That appearance! I took this picture probably 20-30 minutes ago, and it still has at least 1/4 finger of firm off-white foam. This head will not quit! It's very rare that I rate any aspect of a beer a perfect 5.0, but that's exactly what this beer's appearance is: perfect. I challenge anyone to suggest an improvement (other than proper glassware, which isn't the beer's fault  ).

    4.21 / -1.6%

The rare case where the overall score is perhaps less than the sum of its parts. In this case, I found the flavor most directly impacted my overall experience (including drinkability). Damn good beer.

I've got a couple more hours to get another new beer or two in before the midnight EST gun, so perhaps I'll be back. I'll definitely check up on the thread now that it's much easier.

    Cheers!

New Beer #2: when you're in the mood for a German beer, there's really no substitute. Well, not for me; @JackHorzempa can turn to a home brew that I'm sure will hit the spot, but I've got to go to the package store. :grinning:

    Schneider & Sonn Helle Weisse

I love and respect the G. Schneider & Sonn brewery. They make some classic German styles, but they're also not afraid to experiment, taking a very "crafty" approach to innovation (in a way usually ascribed to American brewers, not Germans.

The last two I've had from them, however (Helle Weisse and Hopfenweisse) haven't quite hit the mark, however. Neither were bad, but neither lived up to my (biased) expectations.

Hopfenweisse, to summarize, was too hoppy. It reminded me of a dry-hopped saison, but the graininess, rustic character, and most importantly dryness of a saison makes it a natural fit for dry-hopping. A Hefe, on the other hand, turned out to be a poor fit. Good beer, but the heavy handed use of hops just clashed, and didn't improve the experience - it was less of a Hefe than it would have otherwise been.

Helle Weisse (literally Light White) similarly disappoints. Unsurprisingly, given the name and low ABV (4.9%), it's thin and watery - quite crushable. Light, bright, and perhaps perfect for outdoor consumption during the hot Summer months? Probably! What I'm looking for in a Hefe? Not really!

(To clarify: a good Hefe is always a welcome Summer drinking companion. I still want more stickiness or thickness to the mouthfeel than this.)

Consequently, the flavors have no real impact, no lasting effect. They're there, washing over in three quick phases: light citrus up front; doughy, semi-sweet pale malt with clove accents in the long middle; banana on the finish. But they just don't have any staying power. It's like watching a modern comedy with lots of jokes, but no story or soul: sure, you laugh, but will you remember it twenty years from now?

This is a tasty Hefe, and it's by no means bad. It might even be exactly what they were going for: a light, thin, crushable Hefe. For me, though, if I want something that drinks that light, I'll go for an actual Helles - not a Helle Hefe. This is good but not memorable.

Hello BAs! I am checking in with my extremely-late entry for this week's NBW... this is Double Dry Hopped Ponyhawk by Resilience, a project by Schilling Beer Co.

I don't drink as much from Schilling as I probably should, though I will also admit that I am not much for "style-piece" old-world beers these days. I know, I know... but, in the interest of being honest, I thought I'd mention it. I will also say, however, that my few experiences with the Resilience project haven't exactly been amazing, so perhaps this one will finally be the one to convince me to just get more beer from these guys in general.

The pour of this beer is pretty damn nice. It's, of course, a hazy affair; milkshake-like in consistency and opacity, topped off with a voluminous head that lingers for a few minutes until it recedes to a finger-height ring atop the murky depths (which are, by the way, quite light in color, even compared to most other hazebois these days). The foamy collar leaves behind a substantial amount of solid lacing as it fades, painting the inner face of my glass with tiered streaks of suds as I sip and contemplate.

The nose here is striking in that it reminds me much more of a West Coast-type affair than any type of modern juice-bomb, and that is quite a positive surprise, to be sure! I'm getting some juicy dankness and mango overtones, sure, but there is also a chive/onion/earthy depth to this that also carries with it a bit of grassiness and complex citrus mingling with the greenery. I can't help but smile at how aromatic, bold, and superb this smells. Turns out it's hopped with Mosaic, Simcoe, and Galaxy which is quite the stacked hop lineup. I do love my Simcoe-bombs, and this one is really pushing the complexity of all three hops to a wonderful extent. Hell yes.

Flavor profile is dank and sticky with grassy flavors mixing with tangelo fruitiness and hints of tropical fruit in the mid-palate. Resin and powerful funky garlic/onion at the end of each sip, mixing well with the vibrant fruit character that preceded it. Super potent hoppiness and a very drinkable backbone of malt that keeps the whole thing together... both work to really highlight the quality of the product here. Carbonation is mildly-forceful compared to some other stuff in this style, but it also helps push some of the more intense flavors on the tongue. This is some awesome, tasty stuff. I know it's a limited release, but I hope they release some more of it in the future or at least make it into a seasonal thing because... damn, this is good.

    Cheers!
