My first new beer is Blonde de Chambly from Unibroue. A really nice saison. Obtained in a variety pack and poured from fridge temp. Pours a nice golden yellow/light orange with an abundance of white head. Eventually simmers down. Nose is unmistakably a saison. Barnyard funk right away - then comes wet leather, yeast, mango, a hint of lemon peel, and a bit of apple. Nice and fruity. The taste is nice and smooth. Nothing tugging it one way. A nice balance of yeast, hops, and fruitiness. Citrus for sure, but also some other tropical fruit notes come through. Papaya and mango come to mind. Wet grass, old wood, and a candy sweetness. This is really nice and super easy to drink on a summer night. I will definitely try to get more. Cheers!

Insane storm just rolled through, wind wasn’t bad but house was shaking from thunder. Power flickered several times went off twice and came back. Fingers crossed it stays, I don’t mind losing power but I feel for our two kids. Round two comes later tonight according to weather app. Anyway onto the beer.

    Hill Farmstead Nelson Pale Ale

A very vibrant pale beer, hazy yes but signs of clarity on the edges. Great head and retention with some very nice lacing. Hill Farmstead has consistently some of the best lacing beers I’ve had.

Aroma is best described as vibrant fruity to me. I’m not the best with fruit descriptors but I would say there’s something like a citrus type berry aroma, subtle white grape and subtle frankness as well.

The flavor shows the same citrus berry thing and the white grape too.

The mouthfeel is so soft and clean. It has a nice medium bitterness and finishes dry.

This beer is such a perfect pale ale, it’s drinkable, clean, complex yet simple at the same time. It’s a beautiful looking beer and it’s mouthfeel is really really pleasant. I’m very glad I get to try HF beers once a year and bring some home.

Pours a dark brown small khaki head that fades quickly, moderate lacing.
Coffee, leather, toffee, chocolate maybe some ash. Taste matches the aroma on this one. This is a bit thin for the style, carbonation is moderate. Easy drinking, at 13.5%, that makes this dangerous. My first beer from them, damn good!

Alesmith Speedway Stout - Mostra Coffee and Coconut

Not to lard up this thread with personal matters but this is my first beer in a month after open heart surgery and a subsequent problem that, even though I was in no danger, required me to be attached to an IV for almost four weeks. I'm far along on the road to recovery and am feeling much better than pre surgery when, frankly, I was feeling ancient. I'm on blood thinners which means limited beer consumption but that will increase over time. It's good to be back

This was a disappointment related to the high expectations in everything but look. Coffee was fine in smell and taste but coconut is awol. Alcohol is very well hidden. Feel was very smooth but lacking in imperial stout heft. I really expected more.

[edit]As it warmed (more than I thought was necessary in the summer) the coffee and even coconut began making their presence felt so the taste and feel ratings were upgraded.

New Province Brewing Co.'s Dreaming in Tangerine IPA, 6.2%; 4.22 overall local superstar

Pours an effervescent & not quite bright honey color with a pinky of fast falling beige head. Zero head retention & lacing

    S: Loads of oranges

T: Sweet oranges, a touch of lime & grassyness up front. More sour tangerine notes as this warms along with dryness, plus a little sweet orange slice to offset the bitterness. Finishes with citrus sweetness & a little bit of grassyness/dryness

MF: Medium body, subdued carbonation, lovely balance

Great drinkability, delivers on flavor & juicyness without being too cute

Lacing is interesting. Does it likely presage a finely made beer or does it fit our eye for its aesthetic value? Duvel and La Chouffe always amazed me and they are both great beers. But it was the English ales that first caught my eye; in England when I was young and later when I sold Young's ales out of good old London. Their London Special Ale was a hoppy ale (Kentish hops) that was stark, ahead of its time, and pitched a frothing rocky head with lacing that ran out of room at the bottom of the glass. I can still smell that beer!

[IMG] This one from Modist Brewing is really impressive with Citra & Sultana. Poured into a 13 oz Nordic pint glass canned 6/21/21. Pours a dark hazy yellow with a finger sticky white head that leaves a thin wall of lace, with excellent retention. 4.5

Aroma ripe melon, passionfruit, Dank marijuana, apricot, and some white grapefruit rind. 4.25

Taste follows cantaloupe, passionfruit, apricot, marijuana, and a little hint of grapefruit bitterness. 4.25

Mouthfeel is above medium, a tad sticky not dry, soft gentle carbonation, and at 7.1% ABV it is big on flavor, but easy going down. 4.5

Overall this is really impressive, I am glad I grabbed this one when I left Minnesota. 4.25

Good afternoon for me / evening for you (morning in Europe, I suppose), Weekenders! I actually will be chiming in at least a little bit this weekend.

I finally got out and had a beer in public; a pretty rare occasion, given my work hours (including today). But I had this new offering from Brew Lab HI:

Colloportus is a "Hazy Session IPA." Brew Lab has, so far, really quite good. This is my fourth beer from them. Hops are Citra and Mosaic, and the ABV is 5.1%.

5.1 is actually a little high for a "session" beer (ask the Brits), but it's quite low for an IPA, and it predictably suffers as a consequence. It's not quite as bad as 4-4.5% hoppy seltzer water SIPAs (as I call it), but it's still thin and watery.

The aroma and flavor, however, are quite nice. It actually tastes really good. I just wish it had enough of a presence to make any kind of memorable impact.

    3.56 / added to database

One expensive trip to Bev Mart later, and I'm ready for my second beer of the day:

There's actually quite a bit of Modern Times here, including variants of imperial stouts that I normally only get from participants in the NBS BIF. They had five variants of Pharaoh Ascending - Chocolate Cake Edition, four in cans, and one in a bomber; I grabbed one of each of the cans. Being a sucker for vanilla, I'm going with Cocoa and Vanilla right off the bat. :grinning:

Scores for this are below MT's average for their flavored imperial stouts (this entire series, it seems), but reviews and ratings are sparse.

The nose is somewhat subdued, and there's a slightly sharp metallic note - possibly just the booze, but it stands out.

It really delivers on the palate, though. It is boozy and a bit aggressive, and there's something that doesn't quite click, but I can't place my finger on it. I'd prefer the mouthfeel to be chewier, but you can still sip, savor, and chew.

The flavor is the most important aspect of any beer, though, and it doesn't disappoint. The vanilla is prominent (I wonder if they used vanilla extract, which might explain that sharp, metallic booziness), the cocoa tasty, and the base beer complementary throughout.

I'm looking forward to trying the rest in the series.

Real Black Quad Ale, 10.5% ABV, 3.86 overall

Pours an effervescent mahogany with one finger of of tan head. No head retention or lacing

S: Some green banana, some brown sugar

T: Follows the nose, also getting dryness, figs & choke cherry up front, a little bit of mushroom as well. Mushrooms, dryness & brown sugar as this warms. Finishes dry with green bananas, brown sugar & a little cinnamon

MF: Medium body, fairly firm carbonation, warming

Solid quad, just needs more depth of flavor, a sipper to be sure. ABV gets there eventually, a sipper

[IMG] Poured into a 13 oz Nordic pint glass not sure when it was canned. Pours a very attractive yellow orange with a half finger sticky white head that leaves a thick ring of lace, with nice retention. 4.5

Aroma coconut dominates, some pineapple, and did I mention coconut really not getting anything else. If you like coconut you will dig this one. 4.25

Taste follows coconut just over the top, with just a hint of pineapple my god how much coconut did they toss in this? 4

Mouthfeel is above average, not dry or sticky, soft gentle carbonation, and at 7.2% it goes down really easy. 4.25

Overall I do like it, but it might be the most one dimensional NEIPA I have ever tasted. Citra gets lost with all the coconut. 4

A new-to-me IPA before I break out the big guns (well, one big gun).

Modern Times Dungeon Map is a self-described West Coast IPA. I really like WC IPAs. Modern Times makes very good IPAs. Surely, this will be a home run!

....Ehhh, it's a double, but probably an RBI double, or maybe even a bases-clearing double.

In other words: yes, it's good. It's not amazing.

As far as being a WC IPA, it's got a good amount of bitterness, and the flavors lean toward resinous and citrus fruit, with a hint of tropical. Lively body with a hop oil film. So, pretty traditional.

It doesn't really stand out, but that' fine: it's a good WC IPA. I don't regret purchasing a six pack, and I won't mind getting it again, especially on draught.

All of the above - and more? The plasticware isn't clear, so it makes everything appear darker. However, this is a dark coppery-amber beer, and despite being "West Coast," it isn't perfectly clear (this glass does actually show clear through, so you can evaluate transparency).

Pictures make it all look worse. The beer isn't quite ugly, I'd say, but between the hotel lighting and the dark plastic glass (at least I graduated from red solo cups!), I'm unlikely to get a picture that captures its "good" side.

New Beer number three this Weekend!

Nothing quite like a 2016 Eclipse. No, really; there's nothing quite like it.

This was the slowest, oddest gusher I've ever experienced. It was slow enough that I could get it into the glass without any spillage. And then, minutes later, it was coming out of the bottle again - repour, no problem. Minutes later ... AGAIN! What the hell!

Thankfully, after that third pour, the foam didn't get back out of the bottle. I had no more room in my cup. :grinning:

So, as I mentioned, this is a 2016 Eclipse, in this case the cognac barrel aged variant. Is it any good? In the words of your favorite Scandinavian Satanic-pagan church-burning white nationalist fascist murderer* - "Let's find out!"

The biggest thing this beer has going for you can be summarized in one word: smooth. It's unbelievably drinkable. Thick, creamy, almost chewy; you could sip and savor on this one for days. You'd get tired and pass out before the beer became the slightest bit cumbersome.

Ahh, but didn't I say earlier that flavor was the most important aspect? Indeed I did!

This is where judging the beer is difficult. With this much age, the hops have faded (probably a benefit), but so has the cognac (certainly a detriment). The oak remains - and abounds and abides. There's tons of oak, seriously.

The stout base is reminiscent of aged Narwhal, in that you can tell it's super roasty and bitter, and yet that bitterness and char has mellowed and faded, leaving behind almost a memory imprinted into the flavor profile.

It's a damn good beer, even at this age ... but even fresh, I don't think you can really justify the price. Is Eclipse twice as good as Parabola? I'd say it's not even as good, despite the price disparity. So, enjoy Eclipse as an occasional treat, and find which barrel treatment suits you the best. Skip the rest.

First I wish I could have experienced that beer in England you talked about. I’ve always enjoyed good lacing.

I think to answer the question it may be both. I’d love to here other opinions on this too. For me lacing is a sign of attention to detail with usually (not always) translates to a good beer. I also love it just as much for aesthetic, we do drink and taste with our eyes so the prettier that beer is the better it “tastes.”

Anyone else feel the same or otherwise?
