Hey @Todd did you (read: Beeradvocate) hammer something out with total wine? They seem to be using BA descriptions of beers on their website along with ratings etc.

I believe that Total Wine has been using our scores/info for a very long time now. :heavymetal:

Good to know. I wasn't sure if this fell in the same realm tavour using content off the site did. I may be a thorn in your side sometimes but I love this place and don't want to see anyone ripping BA off. :+1:

I view it as a shelftalker (which I believe they also use in-store) that introduces consumers to BA.

I'm pretty sure that most of this content is free.. Having written reviews, adds, and commentary all of these on-line resources can be useful. Footnoting on the internet would be novel but lovely.

And they are advertising that the information comes from BeerAdvocate.

Tavour was advertising that the reviews they were quoting were from. ba, but using intellectual property without permission is a far cry from shelftalkers.

Now we just need total wine to read threads about cold storage for ipas and out of date beers on shelves.

Good luck with that. One of my local ones replaced the front beer aisles with an oddly combined seltzer and cider section that also happens to have beer on just the top shelf, if it's new or in season...if they remember to update it. Other beers are in scattered areas in reverse alphabetical order by brewery, sometimes double listed, except when it's local, seasonal, a "staff pick," or whatever random category they make up. It's a crap shoot if you'll even find a specific brewery in the store without asking an employee.

It kills me that now when I go into their walk in cooler section it’s mostly seltzer’s now....Ugh.

We've discussed that separately re: Tavour quoting reviews. The short answer is: if you post a review on BA, and BA is a public website, then BA - and only BA - is in a position to "complain" about its use - and even then, only if desired.

I say that as the subject of one such review on Tavour. I always assumed that any review I posted to BA was not my IP, as I chose to use their website for my review - and if a 3rd party chose to subsequently copy my review for advertising, it was up to @Todd and BA to determine if that was OK. And the answer so far has been: "As long as they're crediting where they got it from, go for it!" (In other words: it's good publicity for us! Hell yeah we want them sharing our scores/reviews! )

Not to speak for Todd/BA. Just my experience in that one specific case.

I had a discussion with @Todd about it a while back and it seemed like those quotes quickly disappeared. I could be wrong, and likely am, that there was a discussion between tavour and BA, however I simply like to point out to BA when I see someone else using BA material regardless of permission.

Guys, you're allowed to quote material in an educational/informational context.

Sometimes I wonder if anyone has written anything academic or professionally and cited to the source before?

Fair use is quite expansive when linked to educating/teaching the public.

It's not like Total Wine put out a banner that said "Total Wine and Wu-Tang Clan Forever"

Recently visited the Total Wine in Federal Way, WA to load up another mix-six of local beer for my work trip. It's on me for not checking can dates, but three of the six beers I bought were eleven or more months old (Hair of the Dog cans were over a year old).

At least the Beer Advocate descriptions described what the beer should have tasted like, and informed me of what I missed.

That’s a bummer! I listen to a beer podcast and one guy will get beers from TW occasionally and during the lockdown just ordered them for curbside pickup. Seems like half of the beers are always way out of date. It’s a bummer because their selection is good and their prices are the best. But it’s a crapshoot on dates and proper storage.

I can't comment about all Total Wine stores but my 'local' Total Wine (Claymont, DE) demands that the Wholesale Distributors that they purchase their beer from also provide the labor to stock the shelves. To leverage the old saying "there is no such thing as a free lunch" what beers do you think the Wholesale Distributors are placing on the Total Wine shelves? If you answered "the oldest beers they have at their warehouse" then you would be answering correctly. There is little mystery why there are so many old beers at my 'local' Total Wine.

Perhaps this explains old beer and Total Wine at the other stores?

    Cheers!

I listen to that podcast and it’s my favorite beer podcast. But this scenario is from a podcast called 4 brewers. They live in CA and drink a lot of local beer so I probably appreciate it more than others.

That bottom shelf can get very dusty, sorta anti first in first out. Obscure beers at Total can be obtuse and without use...
