Oh c'mon, everyone knows IPA isn't a "sweater weather" beer.

(everyone note my emoticon -- this is complete sarcasm -- no IPA qualifying statements from fanboys needed )

Putting out a mixed pack called Sweater Weather in early August is wishful thinking. We've got two more months of shorts weather and a month of flannel weather before sweater weather hits.

That said, I'm looking forward to trying this new festbier.

I guess you haven't been following the Fall Beer Sightings 2021 thread?

    Cheers!

P.S. Just to be clear I am 'with you' here in that these beers really shouldn't be released in the middle of the summer.

Oh I'm aware of seasonal creep, that was just a snarky comment on the name Sam Adams chose for this pack, which seems particularly ill suited to its release time.

Based on your review, I think there's more to it than that. I've done biological acidification and differences between it and technical acidification do exist, but it's not a major change. Now in Tombstone we use sour wort purchased from Weyermann with good results.

Weedy, I agree with you here.

My experience in reading stuff from Jim Koch over the years is that at times he can be quite 'circumspect' in his communications. I suppose once you become a marketeer you are forever a marketeer? I wonder if things will improve in the future once Jim decides to retire and Sam Calagione takes over?

    Cheers!

They've renamed the pack given the early August release.

I will be interested in hearing your thoughts about Sam Adams Festbier once you get around to drinking those beers.

    Cheers!

This kind of makes me realize all over again how much I hate their labels.

I wonder if their label designer was the same guy who did Anchor's redesign?

They are certainly similarly generic looking, leaning on a single color per variety for differentiation between them, with other brand imagery being downplayed or absent. It's like watching paint which has already dried, no fun at all.

No mention of the festbier on the SA website, but here's the blurb from the back of the bottle:

The "fest" in festbier means the barley and hops have been gathered and our growers have their first moment to celebrate another successful harvest. What do they reach for? Festbier. A little more malty, a little more hoppy, brewed to relax and enjoy.
    5.8% ABV 22 IBU

I went ahead and entered the beer in the database here as Festbier.

I can't decide if I want to review it soon or wait for NBW...

I’m pretty sure that’s not what “fest” means in Festbier in Germany.

Wonder what barley (or excuse) they use to make (and drink) all the Festbier brewed for Summer festivals?
