Given my age/life situation I feel the need to retire from Bourbon Barrel aged stouts and other heavy beers (such as Triple IPAs, though I don't care much for those). I'm very healthy for my age (44) but I find it gets harder to maintain good physical health as I've gotten older. These beers are generally in the 300+ calorie range easy. Also, I don't generally share beers - Covid is partially to blame but I rarely did anyway. Drinking a 16.9oz bottle of Bourbon County was a bit of a chore last weekend (Though I enjoyed). Having 2 kids aged 2 and 7 makes it tough as well, as I don't like to have more than a slight buzz around them.

I would keep drinking these beers if they came in smaller vessels. Too bad. Any other older BAs face this dilemma? As it stands now I'm going to finish drinking my stock (17,18,19, 20 Bourbon County and a 19 CBS) and otherwise that's it unless I have an opportunity to share or have a small sample/pour somewhere.

I was gonna ask how often were you sampling such big BBA beers? Personally, I love BCBS and variants but no way I’m drinking it more than a few times per week (which never happened as it’s rare here), calories wise as you said that’s quite heavy albeit delicious.

Also good on you only allowing yourself a slight buzz around your kids. Way to go but it’s not only for the children - also your own health. Many around me told me that past 40 is the time to slowly but surely have difficulties to lose weight, and maintain great health, for many of us at least.

Any idea on what beers will be your new choices? Pale ales maybe? Generally around 5 to 7% and come in every format starting with 12oz.

Can't disagree too much - I've trended away from the high-test beers myself over the past couple years. |As much as I enjoy a DIPA or BBA stout now and then, it's getting too much - not even the beer itself, but that much alcohol in one shot. I'm much preferring a good Pils or Kolsch now.
Of course, half of my cellar is bombers and 750's of big stouts, barleywines etc. and SWMBO will only drink an ounce or so of them...

    Yeah, when I was 44 I didn't drink Bourbon-barrel aged beers.
    (Because there were none).

i don’t homebrew but I have a capper (or whatever it is called) and it’s been my best friend on those nights when I want something big, but just a small amount.
I don’t have a good solution for keeping cans sealed overnight, but most of the heavy hitters I have are either capped or cork-and-caged.

500ml and up bottles, I stopper them and spread it out over a couple-three days.

There are a bunch of different styles of bottle stoppers. I use this style:
Just don't use the wine bottle stoppers designed to draw a vacuum.

It is a myth that stoppered BA stouts turn into flat soy sauce in 12 hours!

From personal experience, BCBS is just fine the next day. Or two.

I've never been a fan of the BBA beers. I like beer and I like bourbon but I don't like them together.

Sorta on topic - I'm the same age and a fiend for RIS and stouts - I've cut back on them for the same reasons you mentioned. Not the kids tho. Mine's 21 and he's looking to drink with me these days.

Revolution puts them in 12oz cans. Problem solved.

I've always tried to drink a variety of styles - I've been drinking more English Ales lately (Old Speckled Hen as an example) but there isn't much out there at least in my area. I'm always up for a good ESB, which tend to be in the 4-5% range. Otherwise trying to keep it under 7%, so even double IPAs will be avoided for the most part (but that's hard!).

I love pilsners - I can have one or two, doesn't affect me too much - no stomach issues or trouble sleeping.

I only drink BBA Stouts in cold weather. I’m among the oldest posters here but can drink the large bottles by myself over about 3/4 hours watching football.

I've tried this with similar stoppers. I agree, generally, the beer is fine within a 12 hour window. It's hard to have any type of control once the bottle is opened though!

Same here, I only drank it last weekend due to being housebound (thanks to Hurricane Henri). Perfect opportunity to drink a big beer.

More breweries are rediscovering the 12oz format. Deschutes puts the Black Butte Anniversary beers and The Abyss is 12oz bottles now. And the above mentioned Revolution puts their excellent beers in 12 oz cans.

I'm 71 and I love BBA and RBA beers, be they stouts, porters, scotch ales and even an occasional IPA. I buy them when I see them and stash 'em in the crawl space. That being said, when Mr. Covid first appeared I figured I'd drink 'em instead of cellaring them and I ballooned to 277 lbs, the good doctor said whatever you're doing stop, so I did. I quit eating the foods I loved. Now it's a bowl of fruit in the morning, sometimes, salad at lunch and a regular dinner. No snacks in the evening and 12 miles a day on a bike. I'm down to 230 and I still have one every other day.

In my mid '60s and a yearn for those days of my 40's when I could eat like a horse and drink like a fish and have no effect on weight. I dropped from 171 to 152 in a year by walking farther and faster and reducing beer and other sources of carbs but not eliminating anything I eat or drink. I LOVE BBA beers but drink them only as an occasional treat. I can usually get my wife to share a 16 oz or larger beer so I can keep the volume to about 10-12 oz.

I know that feeling. I have two young kids and a 10% + abv beer can knock me out. if I have one, usually late evening after kids are in bed.

Breweries need to start offering these big beers in smaller vessels. Even 12 oz. is too much.

44? Only the beginning. There SHOULD be a downward trend. Taking care of health and regular activity are requirements for a better chance at an enjoyable old age. I'm 74 and now drinking about a six pack a week, usually less than 6%. You could drink half or a third of a strong half liter bottle, stopper it securely, and learn to enjoy the less carbonated remainders (consider it almost-cask).

I definitely agree, but only for some of the reasons. I used to drink a 750ml of Black Tuesday in a night, which was NOT good. I mean, it was good, but not great for the next day. This was not regular, but once in a while. I do still drink 1-2 Barrel-aged stouts or barleywines on a weekend night sometimes, but much less frequently than a few years ago. It's not the calories for me, as I run 100 miles per week. It's for general health - I would like to be around for my kids and I also simply don't feel great after 30 straight days of drinking big beers. It's tough to function physically and mentally early in the morning, which I must do for my running and for my job. A noted by @MNAle , stoppers are your friend. I have stoppered big Bruery stouts for 10-15 days and they still taste amazing.
