    Happy Retirement!

I have also been indulging in much lower ABV beers that come in the 12 oz format, mostly Yuengling stuff.

Have an 18 month old, and while I do not drink while he’s awake, I do find that drinking higher ABV beers makes me a bit more sluggish in the morning.

That's really great to hear you're still going strong at your age. Honestly I think the best beers are the sessionable ones anyway so I think I'll be fine eventually.

Have one at like Thanksgiving or Christmas as a nice holiday treat.

I totally understand not being able to stomach the high abv beers after a while… it’s just overkill, and as I get older, too much on the head and the stomach. Plus the $20 you’d spend on a bottle can get you a 12 pack of something great tasting and manageable at the same time!

I'm 42, my kids are 4 and 10. I don't drink in front of them usually, and usually only drink one night a week. I have no qualms drinking half of a bomber and either capping it, calling a neighbor for a pour, or even dumping what I don't drink. If you're eating a large meal and know you have reached your limit eating, do you force yourself to finish what's left on your plate? Same thing. Beer isn't some magical elixir that can not be wasted. It's a food product and should be treated as such.

Where have you seen Abyss in 12oz? Does it hit retail stores?

Yeah and since they moved to the smaller format, I have not seen them in Casper. :slight_frown:

I've really slowed down on my BBAS intake quite a bit over the last few years, and can't really contribute it to any conscious decision. I just drink a lot less of them now, and generally only when I'm at a brewery that has something really intriguing. I do keep a few aging for the coldest of grey winter days (there's really nothing like a great Impy Stout on a day like that).

As far as calories, I started mountain biking about when I started drinking good beer, so that has helped keep the weight in check.

At this point I tend to save most BBA beers that are larger than 12 oz for days when I can sip for at least 3 hours if not longer or bring them to shares. I do have to say seeing more breweries moving to 12 oz cans or bottles is something I really like.

I find that the older I get the higher my tolerance gets. People that say they can't drink as much as when they were younger is very opposite of me. However the calories in the big (and regular) beers have more affect on my fatness than they did years ago. I've cut down because of that.
I'm more selective on BBAs because so many of them have flavorings in them. I'd even prefer BA over BBA.

Yes, I see and buy them as shelf beers. And, Abyss is a year round beer now. I was buying the 12oz bottles of Black Butte XXXIII for $4.99 before tax. Once again, Deschutes shows why they're an industry leader.

I definitely drink less BBA and other high alcohol beers these days. First reason being that it’s a hot as hell summer and these types of beers definitely don’t fit the bill.
Second reason being that in general I’m becoming less tolerant of high alcohol beers. Too sweet and too boozy.

Damn this thread is a bummer

I hope to NEVER stop drinking BBA beers no matter the age. I have friends at my gym in their 60s that are god damned monsters and in amazing shape

Maybe you just need a Muay Thai gym
How often do you all exercise and what does your daily diet look like?

Also...stout season is a myth..its always stout season

I know age seems to play a factor for some people and, while I'm not that old, it does definitely take its toll on me the next day if I drink other things before or after it, which is a common occurrence.

I'm inclined to share good beer no matter what it is, personally (that I buy, to pour) and professionally (that I recommend to customers to buy themselves) so drinking certain beers all by myself seems selfish and arduous. I save certain things for when I have beer-drinking company over to visit.

Bummer is right, but I get it I suppose. Ideally I'll drink them my whole life but ya never know. And a hard agree on stout season being a myth. I hate the idea of "seasonal" beers. I'll enjoy any beer style any time I'm in the mood for it

Didn't mean for it to be too negative. Just part of life - we all have to make adjustments as we get older.

I exercise everyday - really focusing on core workouts these days. Chops/squats/sit-ups with a 45lb plate plus circuit training/weights twice per week, running/biking on the other days. I really keep a close eye on my weight, blood pressure etc..these big stouts were creating too much of a roadblock in terms of my fitness goals.

I've found as I've gotten older that day drinking (or early evening) is preferred. I can get hydrated before bed and feel great in the morning. Only works for me on weekends though.

I agree 100%. No need for 10%+ beers to be in 16oz cans (or larger format). 12oz bottle/cans are acceptable but I've had a high ABV beer (21st amendment barelywine) in an 8oz can and thought that was ideal for the strength of the beer.
