It just sounds like you've been defeated the way it was worded.

Im not in my 40s yet but so far im fine with all the big beers i drink. 300 calories aint shit from a beer. Burns off with a few miles ran or fasting.
I hope to NEVER end up in the situation you're in because of a health concern. We all know the game were in so it's best to play smart.
Workout. Eat better. Fast. Don't drink too much . It will be fine
    .cheers...or not

If you do ever get to NJ I hope you take me up on my offer. From someone who has worked in various forms of health care I did sincerely find what you did as very impressive

Jesus man, chill. I actually don't have any health concerns, am very healthy but have fitness goals. Quite frankly my standard of fitness is higher than most. It's hard to maintain these goals when I'm periodically drinking a beer 300+ calories (in the case of Bourbon County 500+ per bottle).

That's all it is. I'm doing pretty well. Good thing I enjoy lagers/pilsners/ESBs etc. even moreso than the heavy stuff! ANd I really doubt I'm 100% done for good - just not seeking these beers out anymore.

I'm 73 years old. I can't drink as much as I used to (probably a good thing). I still enjoy those big beers, but now I share them with my wife or drink them over a couple days.
Even when I was drinking the big beers, weight was never a problem. I weigh the same as I did in high school. Probably good genetics, but I am convinced a vegan diet makes a difference.

Back in the late 1990s when I got into drinking craft beer, Anchor Brewing used to package their Old Foghorn Barleywine Ale in 7 ounce bottles. That was a perfect size for a high ABV beer.

I remember going to the Green Leafe Cafe in Williamsburg, VA and ordering an Anchor Old Foghorn that was on tap. I thought I'd be getting a small serving size, but the server gave me a full 16 ounce pint of this beer.

Had an uncle die from fasting and drinking. Probably ought to leave the medical advice to the professionals.
    Cheers!

This is a great point. If you consume over a longer period of time in a single night, it's going to be much better for the health and buzz. Three hours for a big beer is great, and you get to try it at slightly different temperatures, which is a fun experiment.

With age comes wisdom and no use beating your head on a brick wall by doing all the dumb shit you did in your youth. The current me, if I could go back in a time machine, would be ragging on my younger me telling myself it all catches up to you down the line. Good on you for your lifestyle changes:wink:

Fasting/schmasting. People that I've seen do it generally aren't active so it's the only way they can lose weight long-term. If you're active and hit the weights, etc. you're going to need to eat and get some protein/carbs.

    To each his own though!

I'm 51 now. A few years ago, I found it increasingly difficult to sustain my alcohol consumption levels of the previous 20 years or so. The kicker for me was when I started having trouble sleeping comfortably if I drank too much.

I cut way back for awhile because that was what my body was telling me to do. Gradually, I have been increasing my intake again. I probably drink more than most peolpe my age, but that's just my sense. I don't think that I drink as much as I did ten years ago and I'm certain that I don't drink as much as I did 20 years ago.

I look at it from the perspective that drinking should be enjoyable. So, only drink as much as you enjoy. It might sound simplistic but I genuinely think that it is that simple.

Hah. I'm only 29 and I rarely buy anything stronger than 8% anymore. It's too much. I like being able to drink about three beers in a session but I don't want to waste the entire next day being hungover.

Getting (very) close to 50 with a nearly 4 year old son. My wife and I started our own business last year so that means we each have two full time jobs (day job+our own company) plus child rearing so basically it’s 7 days a week working nearly year round. I have always been one to gain fat easily and also muscle, and have a background of weight training and power lifting. Slowly getting back into that a bit after a hiatus.

In recent years it’s been noticeably harder to control my weight as I age. Also (negative) effects of alcohol on sleep quality have ramped up significantly. I love big beers, especially barrel aged barleywines and stouts and am happy to drink them all year round in the AC. Lately I’ve limited all beer consumption to one and at the most two nights per week, with another one or two nights drinking top shelf tequila which seems to really agree with me (like Fortaleza, G4 etc). Sometimes I take one or two weeks in a row off from beer and only drink other stuff one night per week. If I stick to that I feel better all around. I’m not super worried about my son seeing me drink a few, but definitely don’t want to be a drunken ass with the family (or otherwise). My wife quit drinking five months ago for her own health reasons and the overall effect of that has been to lower my consumption significantly. There’s no question I love my big beers but also that they have a pretty awful net effect on health and are so caloric and packed with sugar, one reason I think that the high quality distillates (I.e. tequila) are easier on me overall. Still, barleywines. Can’t give em up.

The years affect us all a little differently and it’s funny to find myself at a time of life when I’m okay being sober more than 50% of my nights. I can’t see myself ever giving up beer totally but the nights I end my day not drinking, stretching for 15 minutes quietly and putting my phone out of reach are ones when I sleep soundly and wake up feeling surprisingly well and ready to tackle the day. Also the more nights I don’t drink (big) beers the better they taste when I do and the less palate fatigue I experience!

I have a good friend same age as me, 56, who has a rule: No alcohol is kept in the house. Nothing is stored. There's never anything to reach for. Want a beer? Go out and have one or two. They'll bring home something to drink with dinner but it cannot remain. Finish it. It's not really my lifestyle but I truly respect what they're doing because they are responsible for a lot of people's well being. That said, we do meet up and get sauced every now and again! Cheers!

I pour one glass from the bomber and decant the rest.

Small, sealed 6-8 oz bottles will last for a considerable time in the refrigerator with a minimal loss of carbonation.

Screw working out! Cuts into my beer drinking time.
High ABV beers are my bag, love 'em, any time, any day.
Then again, I'm retired and don't give a shit.

At 55 I've mostly retired from the high abv beers. Mostly. I do experience impulse buys/muscle memory when I see something tempting on the shelf.

I'm just reluctant to put the words "retirement from" and "beer" in the same sentence.
