What should we do with r/beeradvocate?

I was able to finally grab r/beeradvocate on Reddit. Someone had been camping it for nearly a decade, but back in July it was released during a mass subreddit purge and I was able to grab it. Annoying AF as we could've been using it for many years.

Anyway. Now that we have it, what should we do with it? People on Discord said we should use it for AMAs (Ask Me Anything) with the industry. This makes a lot of sense as AMA was made popular by Reddit. We've tried to host some here in our forums, but this particular forum platform isn't the best for it. But Reddit is perfect for it.

Open to any and all ideas.

Why Reddit? This site can only reach so many people, so why not go to where others are and expose BeerAdvocate to a whole new audience? Why not be where 52M+ daily active users are? For example: Why Facebook? Because, as of this post, the last post I made on Facebook has already reached over 150,000 people and generated nearly 11,000 replies (most of whom aren't on BA).

Note: There's no need to reply if you've got nothing positive to add. I'm looking for helpful ideas, not Debbie Downers.

On Reddit? Give us a join: https://www.reddit.com/r/beeradvocate/ (you can't post, yet)

    Thanks in advance!

Maybe you could always crosspost on r/beer and r/craftbeer too but I usually just end up here for most of my beer conversations. But it wouldn't hurt to use Reddit to try and get a new audience. Just seems like a lot of the people who are serious about craft beer are here already, but trying different things to get new users here isn't a bad thing at all.

I know several people are really into craft beer who do not visit BA. Heck, I drank increasingly nice beers for almost 40 years before I discovered BA. There is a whole world of people who appreciate craft beer who do not visit BA. I'm in favor of using additional platforms like FB or others.

AMA's for sure, but much of anything else will depend on how the sub will be modded. I don't know how you'd directly monetize a subreddit so I'm figuring the goal is to drive traffic & society members for BA

With a proactive mod you could do a lot of cross population.
    • Reddit posts of current & past reviews from you and some of the really good reviewers with encouragement for redditors to join and post their review on BA
    • Announcements and discussion of fests (virtual & IRL) directing readers to BA for registration
    • Double some of the opening posts for “socially conscious” BA threads on Reddit (they love that stuff) letting readers know they can comment on BA
    • Hype the tasting planning thread, NBW, WBAYDN, etc, and direct to BA to participate
    • Post the new release announcements and direct to BA for further info & discussion (this sort of thing can cross post on other craft subs Hey, I just read on r/beeradvocate that 2021 BCBS has been announced)
    • Sidebar with basic style, glassware info with links to BA for further info
    • Ditto with the Beers of Fame, Top 250 a list with links to BA for info
I don't remember what the poll showed about Reddit users, but a good way to get a decent subscription base quickly might be to offer 3 months of BA Society to any BA subscribing to r/beeradvocate

Genuine question: What makes this forum not the best and the other perfect for it?

Good question: Features like up/down voting, sorting questions, threaded replies, and whatnot make hosting (and following) AMAs on Reddit a hell of a lot easier. Reddit's algorithm also favors trending and suggested posts (based on your interests), which could result in automagically exposing the AMA (and subsequently the BA brand and subreddit) to even more people. Same with being able to crosspost between subreddits.

Not trying to troll here, but I’d suggest this: nothing.

Reddit just seems a bit redundant as a platform versus using the main side. It’s a just place for discussion, same for here. Plus, r/beer is basically the same thing and has been at it (on reddit) for a bit longer. So, in my opinion, it just seems kinda unnecessary to me to even bother from my perspective. To each their own, of course, but count me out.

EDIT: now that I’m thinking more about it, maybe make the Reddit a discussion for things happening on the site? In my opinion a Reddit should be about the subject at hand. So for a BA Reddit the discussion should be about everything BeerAdvocate is doing; so maybe discuss whatever events or news about the brand? Tastings, festivals, etc?

I only recently started using Reddit, and have only made 2 posts, but it seems like if you put a thoughtful effort into a post people will respond in ways I hadn't imagined. I racked up over 1000 karma in one day of finally being active and striking a chord on a topic, and that's all I've done so far, but I could see it going sideways too. Yet it seems like it has developed some pretty neat, organic controls to temper that though. Discussions might get a little deeper while remaining more focused and on topic too, with their voting tools.

As a poster mentioned, Beer Advocate would be open to a lot more craft beer drinkers. We could have a lot more in depth discussions. Lots of topics which get limited discussion on this site: the more recent increased brewing of lagers, the USA may now may be the world leading lager brewer. Glassware and serving temp needs more discussion. Also, storage. I’ll join. Good to hear you grabbed it.

Bill, this is damn near perfect. I feel like it will also promote the cellar reviews, as many Redditors will post old vintages they are drinking. On the flip side, Reddit can easily become toxic. However I feel that beer enthusiasts will likely keep things chill

I actually found Beer Advocate on Reddit... I’m on Reddit frequently writing bourbon reviews for my subreddit group. We recently have over 1k members and have 2 barrel picks coming

I just joined. FYI we are not able to post anything on there...

    cheers

As intended. Didn't want to kick it off with a free-for-all, hence this thread.

Several years ago there was talk of a law holding hosts responsible if they facilitated or encouraged illegal activities on their site, at about the same time there were rumors/accusations that a mass shooter had somehow (details were vague) obtained his gun via a Reddit sub.
Reddit's response was a purge of all the trading subs that dealt with age restricted items (cigars, whiskey, beer, etc), subs dealing with dubious topics (obtaining fake ID's, shoplifting brags & tips, shipping narcotics, accessing dark web, etc), and most all of the firearms related subs.
To the best of my knowledge those bans are still in place.

I think you've already mentioned the biggest reasons to do it. You can reach more people. I think reddit allows for greater, casual participation, quickly. While I've been a BA for a while now, I have not been active in years for various reasons, but mostly due to changes in my life. I think reddit would be a great way to bring outside people in and let some of us that don't frequent the main site as much, still be part of the community.

I tend to lurk online, but I will be part of good conversations (and throw in the occasional pun now and again). Reddit is my one stop shopping place for all internet browsing, so I'm thrilled you'll be there. AMAs would be great, but really I'm looking for a place to just be a part of the community without one extra site to visit.

Congrats on the grab. I say go for it. Start w/ AMA and see where it goes. I've been lurking on Reddit for a good 6 months now, mostly following r/CapitolConsequences and now r/mfdoom a bit too. Pretty much just like this site, I lurked for some months, saw enough to get to a point where I felt compelled to respond to a post, and have never looked back. This will probably get me to finally make an account. Also, I need more reasons to spend more time on the internet like I need a hole in my head or more barrel aged stouts. So there's that.
