Quite a beautiful pour and sustained, foamy head for this Oktoberfest. The appearance and flavor profile reminds me of Paulaner's interpretation. The flavor is dominated by tangy and sweet malt, yets never becomes cloying as the hop profile keeps this one refreshing and quaffable. I seem to recall Sierra Nevada's second collaboration tasting somewhat similar to this one. With the lower ABV and simple flavor profile, this one is just right for celebrating the season.

[IMG] Poured into a 13 oz Teku glass not sure when it was brewed, but recent with my source Mr. JZ @jzeilinger . Pours a very light milky yellow with a half finger sticky white head that leaves thin lines of lace with nice retention. 4.5

Aroma is peach, mango, passionfruit, ripe melon, apricot, grapefruit, and a little alcohol is present. 4.25

Taste follows peach, mango, passionfruit, cantaloupe, apricot, grapefruit, and again a little alcohol in the finish. 4.25

Mouthfeel is pretty big, soft gentle carbonation, not sticky or dry, and I am assuming it is 9.6% it might drink even bigger, but I had no problem drinking it. 4.25

Overall this is a really good brew and this is a brewery to keep and eye on, doing some great things. Cheers all and thanks JZ. 4.25

We had our 50th reunion luckily before all hell broke loose. Grimsley Senior High School class of 1969. There are just so many talented and accomplished people that received an outstanding education. As a freshman in college the federal writing program that I had been part of since 1962-63 really gave me lots of advantages in writing papers and organizing thought on paper.

If you do I'd be curious to read your thoughts, always fun to see if we pick up on the same things. My only complaint is I wish the abv was lower. I didn't notice any heat or anything but lightweight that I am I could definitely feel a slight buzz when I finished.

Next up, a California brew: Wolf Among Weeds, an 8% ABV IPA from Golden Road (another brewery first for me.

I have heard of a wolf among reeds, but never weeds - apparently a nod to lupulin's dank family tree. Will this be a modern hazy IPA, or a bitter WC hop bomb?

Kind of ... neither. Although it certainly leans far more toward the latter than the former.

It is indeed bitter, but only moderately so. There's a resinous aspect to it, as well as a mild to moderate dankness. Some pine, but not overmuch. Slightly herbal, but not overly so. Tropical and citrus? Yes, indeed: mango, lemon, lime, and grapefruit - but again, not over the top.

Restraint, then, seems to be the name of the game - except that in the total package, it doesn't seem to be restrained. It's quite nice overall, and I'm glad I got a six pack. I would be very happy with this brew available on tap locally.

With only a 6 oz sample (after splitting with my partner) to go on for this year, I can still say it's a damn good beer. It also anecdotally checks with my memory with the quality of older rye variants of the Old Rasputin anniversary offerings.

In other words: if you see it in any format, it's worth grabbing (assuming you at least like the base Old Rasputin).

Good to see you again, as always, Jon.

[IMG] Poured into 13 oz Teku glass bottled on 7/30/21. Pours a very attractive chestnut brown, with a massive two plus finger head that leaves plenty of thick streaks of lace with excellent retention. 4.5

Aroma is vanilla bean, coffee grounds, cocoa nibs, and toffee I am getting no barrel and that isn’t a complaint, more like wow it is 11% and no alcohol detected. 4.75

Taste follows vanilla, coffee, cocoa, and toffee really tasty. 4.75

Mouthfeel is above average, not dry, the perfect amount of life, and at 11% it goes down really easy. 4.5

Overall this is fantastic, I need to get more for sure. I can see this tasting amazing on a cool evening. Must try at $15 a 4 pack. 4.5

Fruited Kettle Sour with raspberry, blackberry, blackcurrant and pomegranate, from Spain (7%).

Pours an opaque, deep red to purple coloration with a small, fluffy, pink head. Smells of light biscuity malt and vibrant tart berry notes of blackberry and raspberry, as well as a sweeter tropical touch of pomegranate.

Taste follows the nose, with a great balance of tart red berries and lighter sweet tropical accents of raspberry, blackberry, currants and pomegranate, with a very pleasant underlying lactic acidity. Finishes with a medium acidity and some raspberry, blackberry and pomegranate lingering in the aftertaste. Smooth mouthfeel with a medium body and carbonation.

The tart berry notes and lactic acidity really combine to make for quite a mouth-puckering brew that never turns quite too sour thanks to some sweet tropical accents though, with the fruit really standing out rather bright and vibrant here. While it still might be a bit too sour for some, I found it rather enjoyable thanks to it's expressive fruitiness and refreshing acidity.

Overall this makes for quite an acidic, but well-balanced and refreshing Kettle Sour with some very expressive fruit notes.

Devil's Backbone Munchen on Pumpkin Pumpkin Lager - Pours a nice clear copper color, generous head. Smell is pumpkin pie and spices. Taste is pretty good, the Lager yeast and pumpkin are all there but it doesn't lean too far in either direction and is nicely balanced. Nice twist on pumpkin beers and definitely different than a Pumpkin Ale; if you prefer a hint of pumpkin this would be your beer.
I would definitely drink again if handed one but not something I would go out of my way for. Prost!

Ryeway to Heaven - Revolution Brewing - 15.8% ABV.

This was sent to me in a beer trade, however, I can't remember if @basaywhat or @jkblr sent it to me. Whomever sent it to me, I'm very grateful for this beer.

This beer is damn good, and that fact doesn't surprise me one bit. The one thing that did surprise me is how thick feeling this beer is - it's very thick, almost syrup like. It goes down very smooth, but on the back, it lets you know it's strong with a bit of a burn.

This beer pours a nice dark brown. There was a pretty damn good head here - 2 finger, and it lasted a decent amount of time. There's no lacing on the glass.
The nose has notes, strong notes, of caramel, and toffee. I get some molasses as well.
Taste - This beer is full on caramel and toffee, and molasses. There's a good rye flavor to this beer also.
This is one thick beer. Very syrupy. This beer is also very smooth going down, but it does have a bit of a kick on the backside.
    Damn solid, and tasty beer.

    See you all tomorrow.

Partially cloudy, golden orange body; thick, spongy and dense white head; patchy sheets of foam coast the glass. Richly sweet aroma; caramel and lightly toasted grain. Heavy sweetness in the taste; toasted grain and heavy caramel notes; moderate bitterness; phenolic; some woody and bourbon-like notes but not strongly present. Heavy body; big residual sugar presence; fairly dry overall.

This is a rich, decadently sweet golden ale. Some barrel aging is noted (mostly a green, wooden note). This beer gives you a powerful and earthly sweet beer experience.

Poured at 53 °F; no canning information noted on the can.

750 ml bottle poured into a tulip

A- A hazy golden straw with a two finger white head.

S- Tart, wheat, oak, some red wine, slightly earthy, some brett funk.

T- Tart, lemons, hints of oranges, red wine, oak, wheat, a little earthy, mild funk.

    M- Smooth, soft, light body.

O- This is good, but pretty much has gone into the tart saison territory. Barrel and brett work very well in this.

Founders Velvet Rush - I'm usually on top of their BA releases because I really enjoy them but somehow this one slipped right by me and when I passed it at the store I said well well, don't mind if I do! Pours a nice brown/slightly crimson color. Head is thick but not too much so. Smell, wow! Coffee, chocolate, vanilla, Bourbon...pretty much everything I love all in one beer. Taste is sublime, every single flavor is there in a wonderful mix and the 11.1% is...where exactly?! Dangerously smooth and I have to consciously sip this slowly...this four pack won't last long at all.

    Bottled on 07/30. Prost!

Northern Monk / Lanre Bakare - Patrons Project 30.01: From Bradford To The World

    Foreign/Export Stout from England (8.3%).

Pours a pitch-black coloration with a large, creamy head. Smells of roasted malt, chocolate, berries and lighter coffee and herbal hop notes.

Taste is an excellent balance of roasted, slightly caramelly malt and herbal hops, with strong dark, bitter chocolate and lighter coffee and berry notes of red and black currants, as well as just a hint of tobacco and licorice. Finishes with a medium bitterness and some chocolate, berries and tobacco lingering in the aftertaste. Smooth mouthfeel with a medium body and carbonation.

While I think that this is almost too rich for a Foreign/Export Stout, that can hardly be held against it, while there really is an excellent balance of sweet, roasted, bitter and fruity elements to this, with it retaining a mostly roasted , dry and bitter character that is enhanced by some sweeter caramel malt and slightly tart berry notes, with some tobacco and licorice adding a bit more depth here.

Overall, this just makes for a terrific Stout with an excellent balance and subtle complexity, while I absolutely love the dry and bitter character here.

It's a twofer! My first fresh hop of the season (hopefully the first of many), alongside the non-fresh hop version of it. Eliot, from Ex Novo. I had to order online and pay exorbitant shipping rates...but by golly, I love me some fresh hops. The five days of being out of town in the seven days after I ordered it wrought havoc with delivery, but I received it this morning on UPS' last try. For NBW, I'm focusing on each beer separately. I'll go post a head-to-head comparison in that thread in a little while.
    Eliot:
12oz can served in something in between a wineglass and a teku. Canned on 07/06/21.

Pours a clear brassy golden with a big head that collapses into a high clumpy ring and a low clumpy layer. Smell is muted -- lemon, lemon zest, and light grainy/biscuit aroma.

Taste leans toward bitter and lemony. Moderate grainy sweetness.

Mouthfeel is light, clean, and refreshing. Overall, very good beer.

    Fresh Hop Eliot:
16oz can served in a similar glass. Stamped Goschie Centennial 08/16/21.

Pours a slightly hazy golden yellow with a medium sized head that fades into a set of concentric creamy rings. Smell is hop resin and honeysuckle.

Taste is satisfyingly fresh hops. Green, resinous, floral, some citrus, moderate bitterness, some honey and/or honeysuckle.

Mouthfeel is light, clean, refreshing. Overall...very good.

I'm happy to have more of each of these beers available to me.

    Cheers!
