I would like to start a thread on Pelican. THese guys have always been up "there" since I arrived in Oregon back in 1999.. But they had a strange habit of expanding then deflating etc. I just wanted to start a thread because recently they have been putting out some really nice stuff. Their IPAs are getting better and their special releases are really interesting , weird and good at the same time. Got fresh Updrift in the fridge..2 weeks old and i bought more bottles of their happoshu ( really you got to try this). Anyway Pelican keep doing more weird stuff!
Used to have a friend in the early 2000’s whose favorite ipa was the “India pelican ale” from them. Perfect Storm/mother of all storms was always a classic as well.
It was really, really good back then. But then they decided to "imperialize" it, and it was never the same. Just so they could justify a price increase. Really stupid marketing ploy IMHO. Outside of Perfect Storm, their stuff was pretty mediocre fo quite a while. However, of late there's been a noticeable uptick in the quality of their beers across the board. Their ba stouts are quite good, and as @Reidrover pointed out, some of their special release beers have been very impressive. Not only is fresh Updrift really, really good, it's affordable and readily available here in pdx. You can find uber fresh Updrift at most grocery stores.
