Thats awesome, my family would vacation in South Carolina every year, starting when I was probably 8. It was Edisto Island we were on, I found so many fossils. Anything from petrified wood, to Meg teeth, and some equestrian/horse bones. Think I have about 1000 fossil shark teeth from there (well my niece and nephews have them now )

OK, back on topic, to whatever this thread is suppose to be ha.

Untapped and badges, I think. I'm lost in memories. But I am having a delicious Sierra Nevada Pale Ale!

Incorrect. Next Glass is the parent company of BeerAdvocate, Untappd, Hop Culture, Oznr, and Ollie Order.

The only reason I haven’t gotten involved thus far is because it seems like there’s way too much involved in the act of enjoying a beer and recording your experience. And you have only reaffirmed my thinking. I love this site because it’s simple and clean…. And there’s no talk of ciders or seltzer’s.

 Hence, my often referring to them (Untappd) as this site's "Sister Site", usually when submitting ChANge/Edit requests.

    I still like this thread's title! :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye::stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes::crazy_face:

Ah, but for me when I started, the only way to keep track was to write a review. WAY too much involved, IMHO. That only ChANged with the advent of Untappd & led to my stepping back on here.

Gamification? Sure. I'll cop to it. BUT, Greg Avola has openly said that he likes the way I roll & only suggested a pic to acCANpony each check-in to quiet the questioners. Easy, peasy, Japanesy.

If love to have seen the BA reaction to this thread before the sale to Untapped. Would have been vicious.

What's Untapped? And when did we sell to them? I never get the memos. :pensive:

Never joined Untappd, but I found BA and became a member back in 2012 when I was looking for a way to log all of the beers I’ve been trying

For me it comes down to total word count.

If I just want to record that I've tried a beer so I know to have (or avoid) it in future, it's Untappd.

If I want to linger over a beer, learn what some new hop variety tastes like or compare Trappist tripels, it's BA.

Basically the same for me. I found Untappd first, then graduated to this site later when the character limit stopped being sufficient. I still use both, Untappd for quick notes/impressions, here for more in-depth reviews.

The badge things seemed fun when I first got on there, but the profusion of them quickly turned it into a feature I barely even pay attention to.

Snarky sarcasm aside - don’t you think that one of the benefits of the new business arrangement with Untappd is that is brings a level of acceptance among what might be considered a more intellectual group of beer aficionados in BAers?

No offence, but what are the last three?

We of course know BA, even Untapped, but who knows Ollie Order? :flushed:

There's no "business arrangement" with Untappd (we're sister companies and coworkers under Next Glass, along with Hop Culture, Oznr, and Ollie Order), but this association has definitely brought some acceptance for both BA and UT users. I've also seen some crossover UT users during our virtual fests. Looking forward to what the future will bring too.

I think Gamification is a great way to get into things. Recently, I have to say, Gamification has played a big role in my getting into riding my Peloton. I'm very much into the Peloton cult now (like the founder of Untappd, Greg).

I do remember being a badge chaser when I first joined Untappd but I can't say I've paid attention to them for several years. I'm glad you're still finding them interesting, It's funny, instead of badges, I've been looking at my BA style stats and trying to figure out which styles of beers I'd like to explore further.

In truth, it's trying to boost my current style favorites (czech and german pilsners, saisons) to catch up with all of the darned IPAs.
