Festivus for the rest of us!

Today is a special NBW since it is also the beginning of the BA ‘virtual’ Oktoberfest celebration (online Oktoberfest tasting)! If you have a new to you Oktoberfest related beer today can be a twofer: discuss your new beer here and also in the Oktoberfest thread.

I am uncertain if there are any ‘rules’ about participating in the other thread but you NBW regulars know what is asked of you in this thread:

    · Please describe the new beer you are drinking e.g., in the AATMO format – Appearance, Aroma, Taste, Mouthfeel and Overall

    · A photo of your new beer is most appreciated

    · Any stories or beer related thoughts are greatly appreciated as well.

Which bring me to my new beer today: Tucher Festbier

Below is how this beer is described on BA:

“To many, the festbiers of Bavaria are a liquid voyage to the tents of Oktoberfest. For Tucher, nestled in its home in northern Bavaria and out of reach of the festivals that overtake Munich’s fairgrounds each fall, the focus is on Fruhlingsfest and celebrating the end of the cold winter months. As such, this festbier is brewed as a fuller-bodied helles lager with a slightly louder presence of old world hops instead of a marzen and is available to festivals year-round!”

On the can is the below verbiage:

    “Authentic Bavarian Special Lager

A refined, full bodied, golden Festbier with a naturally balance finish

    Brewed in Germany”

And there is an icon which lists Geschützte Geographische Angabe which is apparently a German Protected Geographical Indication. This is the first time I have noted this on a German beer lable.

Served in my Polish Pilsner glass:

    Appearance:

A bright golden yellow with a BIG rocky white head. This beer has excellent head retention.

    Aroma:

    A prominent bready aroma.

    Taste:

The flavor follows the nose with bready malt flavor front and center but as the beer opens up there is a subtle but noticeable herbal/spicy hop flavor. There is a low/moderate bitterness.

    Mouthfeel:

This beer is medium bodied with a dry finish.

    Overall:

I enjoyed drinking this beer. I think it is a very good beer.

Hopefully you too will have a tasty beer to drink today to bolster your performance in the feats of strength.

    Cheers!

    @rotsaruch @RobH

Good Morning to all of you new beer weekenders!

I am trying to finish off the beers that @WunderLlama sent my way over the last couple months, so I cracked this J.R.E.A.M. from Burley Oak. Its not a style or a beer I would buy myself, so I am glad to have a chance to try one.

Pours a dark burnt orange color. Opaque and viscous but not sludgy like you get with some of these fruited kettle sours. Huge, billowy head forms on the beer but quickly and steadily recedes leaving behind a thin layer of foam on top of the beer. Aroma has notes of tart strawberries, citrus, lemon, and then a sweet marshmallow note. The result is this creamy, sweet ice cream-ish like character. The marshmallow aroma has a rather artificial character to it however as it warms up.

Taste follows the nose with notes of tart strawberry, lemon, giving way to sweet marshmallow, nutmeg, cinnamon, and vanilla. Its pretty tart, moderately sour and very acidic. The spices add a lovely depth to this making it reminiscent of a pie with ice cream. Feel is tart enough to produce a palpable puckering. Medium bodied, moderate carbonation. Rather dry on the finish.

Overall this is a nice fruited kettle sour. Its not a beer I'd be likely to pick up to drink again, but as these beers go, I enjoyed this one more than most.

This weeks travels took me to Wisconsin and I sought out some New Glarus freshies. Purchased at Genoa City Liquors in Genoa City, Wisconsin, right over the Illinois border

Chilled bottle poured into a teku

    New Glarus notes:

"Luscious notes of pear totter between sweet decadence and bright orchard tartness. The perfect balance of five pear varieties traveled from the Pacific Northwest to ferment in our Wild Fruit Cave. American wheat and barley, malted in Wisconsin and Minnesota, politely support this pear perfection. Inspired by Berliner Weisse styles of brewing and the creative genius of our Brewmaster Dan Carey. A rare and unique triumph to celebrate the return of sunny days!"

Creamy dense white one finger foam cap , good retention, settles to a thin layer and a few lacings over a translucent amber liquid

Aroma is sweet pears and yeasty

Taste is tart - sweet pears , yeasty

Low sudsing , slight tartness , quaffable , you would almost think that this is a pear soda, low abv which was not stated

A really good beer and worthy of a beer hunt if you like pears. I like pears. Need Glarus is an excellent brewer

We’ve been in Seattle since Wednesday around midnight. We’re here for my wife’s college roommates wedding. First trip away from the kids and perfectly timed with fresh hop season. I’m not a big wedding or “forced travel” fan but damn if this isnt the perfect scenario, couldn’t have worked out better. We’ve had a great time in this beautiful part of the country.

Technically I had this last night but to my east coast brain it was after midnight so here it is.

Bale Breaker - Homegrown beer no. 8

*fresh hop ipa canned the day before I drank it and grown completely by bale breaker!

Crystal clear light/pale gold. Initial head gives way to nice layer of opaque white, splotchy minor lacing.

Hops jump out of the glass and hit you in the face. This beer has a perfume like intenseness when smelled from the can, I could smell this all day and it wouldn’t get old. Its somewhat fruity, maybe strawberry like, but also has sweet floral smells and some citrus rind.

Taste is grapefruit like citrus but with an underlying strawberry note. This beer also has a nice light malt background.

This beer has a huge tingly hop bite that becomes super resiny and coats my whole mouth. It has a medium body that has really nice bitterness and finishes dry.

This beer is amazing, out of the 4 fresh hop beers I’ve had so far this has been my favorite. Can’t wait to drink more of them, got a nice box packed up for checked baggage. With no scale I just have to hope I don’t go over that 50 lb mark :grimacing:

Little nod @champ103 finally had some time to read while away from the responsibilities of home and worn

    Good morning NBW
My mother-in-law purchased a Costco membership recently and my wife tagged along one afternoon this week. She was really proud of herself for the purchase of this mix pack.

I made a deal that I would drink all but the two Oktoberfest beers in the random order of the calendar. Both are new to me and this is the first review of this one from Schloßbrau Rheder. Previously listed here on BA as a Euro Pale Lager with no ratings. Untappd has it as a Helles and the box and a German webstore both call it a Märzen. Confused yet?
    Husarentrunk
    [IMG]

500mL can from the 2021 Costco advent calendar stamped EXP 2023/5 poured into a dimpled mug at just above fridge temp 5.3% ABV. The beer pours bright dark gold in color, just short of light amber. The head is off white and recedes to a pencil thin ring and partial layer of tiny bubbles. The aroma is pale and bready malt with a hint of floral hops. The taste is semisweet pale and bready malt with noticeable grassy and floral flavor before a mineral heavy, mildly bitter finish. The mouthfeel is thin bodied with average carbonation and a mostly dry finish. Cleanly lagered. Overall, very good and repeatable festbier. A bit of a surprise coming from this box.

Cheers all and enjoy the new beer in your glass this weekend!

Good morning, weekenders! As you may have seen over in WBAYDN?, I'm making chili today. I won't repost all of the pics (this thread is about the beer), just the one relevant for New Beer Weekend:

I'm going to cheat a little this weekend while reviewing New Park. Of the three IPAs I picked up at Wednesday's farmers' market (the last of the season, sadly), I have already had two (including this one). I did not review them, and neither my palate (far from clean!) nor the situation warranted giving them a fair review. So this is indeed my first review (or rating) of this beer, but it is not technically the first time I have tasted it.

I hope you can find it in your hearts to forgive me.

Expression: Three is one of a series of NE IPAs from New Park. I suspect each highlights different hop varietals. This one is brewed with flaked wheat, and hopped with Citra and Motueka, according to Untappd.

New Park's IPAs have been stellar so far; really, really darn impressive. Let's see if this one keeps pace.

    In a word: yes.

Nothing about this beer is truly mind blowing; I never had a "Wow!" moment. Yet, every aspect is outstanding. It's that level of beer where you start to really take notice and go, "Yes, this is what this style should taste like!" but not that level where you go, "Holy shit, this is pushing the boundaries of what this style can do. I've got to send some to all my friends!"

(I may still well send some to my friends. :stuck_out_tongue: )

If I have a complaint, it's that the flavor lacks complexity. The pale malt adds a pleasant wheat-like graininess to the flavor, for lack of a better explanation, and the hops present as primarily tropical, with accents of citrus, herbs, and an extremely mild dankness (being an extremely fresh can, this may well change over time). I'm not getting waves upon waves of hop flavors - but I don't need that, either, for this to be a very enjoyable experience.

I have rated New Park's IPAs very highly so far, and yet I'm coming in way below average here. I suspect there is a bit of homerism at play. If their IPAs reach a wider audience, that average score will probably drop - but these beers are good enough that they deserve to reach a wider audience!

Thanks for kicking things off @JackHorzempa ! I’ll catch up on the thread later this weekend, will be doing a second mini brewery crawl today as long as I can survive. I’ll be saving the Oktoberfest home new beer reviews for the dedicated tasting thread, will on post brewery weekend tastings in NBW/NBS.

First up is Little Fall, brewed at the Goose Island Clybourn Brewpub, my OG brewery when I started my BA Beer Journey over 5 1/2 years ago.

Brewery Notes: Bock, 5.4% 16 oz, $6. Strawberries, Mandarina Bavaria Hops & Eternal Gratitude. Slightly Sweet. Rye. Great for Fall Weather.

Appearance: Dark ruby brown pour, creamy tan head dissipates quickly, leaving a ring above the base and nothing else. 3.5

    Aroma:
Nice bread aroma, medium in strength, light rye backing. 3.25

    Taste:
Taste consistent with aroma, but lighter in strength. Light rye bread malt flavor, do get strawberry a bit in which works well together. This is OK. 3.25

Mouthfeel: Light fizzy carbonation, light to medium body, balanced, sweet malt flavor balanced well off the hops. Light easy drinking, clean finish. 3.75

    Overall:
This is a good Bock offering, light fruit giving it a unique twist, but not enough flavor to keep me very interested. 3.25

See you back shortly from a brewery I never visited before.

Had many of their beers before, most good to great, but never hit the “Mousetrap” before.

Came specifically for their Fresh Hop Saison, to determine if I should pick up some to go.

    Off Color Aqua Predator

    Brewery Notes:
$6 13 oz draft into a thin glass. ABV: 6.5%. Gravity: 14 dP IBUs: 30
Malts: Pils, Flaked Wheat, Honey Malt
Hops: Nugget, Sterling, Freshly harvest “wet” hops from Hop Head Farms
Secret Techniques: Adding a shitload of wet hops into a shift hopback.

Our annual wet hopped saison made with our friends at Hop Head Farms over in Michigan. Hops are only harvested once a year and, once picked, they need to be immediately processed and carefully dried or they overheat, wilt, and burn off all the oils that make them so aromatic, distinctive, and intriguing. One day a year though, brewers and hop farmers can celebrate the new harvest by making a beer with the freshly picked hops. Timing is crucial and the beer needs to be made within hours of the hops being pulled from the vine.

Appearance: Hazy white golden base, thin white fine bubble head, loose lacing. 3.5

    Aroma:
Funky yeast, lemongrass, citrus and honey. Sweet and medium in strength. 3.75

    Taste:
Consistent with the aroma, sweeter than expected. Sweet lemon, Belgian yeast takes a back seat. Citrus. Like a mimosa. Don’t get the pepper I typically get with the Apex base. Good. 3.5

    Mouthfeel:
Light, thin, nominal carbonation. Easy drinking, lightly sweet aftertaste. 3.5

    Overall:
Glad I tried, but not getting much with the fresh hop treatment beyond added sweetness and loss of pepper I appreciate in Apex Predator. Like it, but would order an Apex Predator over this in the future. 3.5

Stupid girl the live music here. Back with more, either from here or another new to me brewery soon.

    Cheers!

Surly Fifteen BA Belgian Dark Strong/Grand-cru, 10.5% ABV. Pours clear dark reddish brown, with a one-finger off-white head. Nose is sweet dark fruit, wine, and bourbon. Taste follows, plus toffee, slightly sweet, slightly bitter, faintly tart. Decent mouthfeel, overall outstanding. I'll age up the second one, this could get even better. Nice complexity, improves as it warms, but costs more than BCBS variants.

    Fuerst Wiacek - Brain Drop

New England IPA with Mosaic and Vic Secret hops, from Germany (8%).

Pours a hazy, orange coloration with a medium, fluffy head. Smells of light biscuity malt and tropical/citrus hops, with notes of mango, passion fruit and grapefruit.

Taste is a great balance of light biscuity malt and fruity, juicy, slightly earthy and resinous hops, with tropical and citrus notes of mango, passion fruit, pineapple and grapefruit, as well as just a hint of pine. Finishes with a light bitterness and some mango and grapefruit lingering in the aftertaste. Soft mouthfeel with a medium body and carbonation.

A fairly typical fruit basket New England IPA that is big on the juicy, tropical and lighter, zesty citrus notes, as well as just a hínt of earthy and resinous accents that makes this just a bit more interesting, although they are quite subtle. While this may not be the most original example of the style I've had recently, it certainly makes up for that with quite a juicy character and vibrant hoppiness, as well as a good, soft mouthfeel, although it's a bit too sweet for my personal taste.

Overall, this makes for an enjoyable New England IPA that ticks all the boxes that you would expect from the style.

Second new beer of the weekend, and it's another New Park hazy IPA: Fragment.

Once again, I'm going to come in well below average - but once again, that's not because the beer is in any way bad.

This one is, if anything, a little less impressive than its cousin. It's more one note: on the palate, it's sweet and juicy, in particular tropical notes (mango, papaya, banana, peach) as well as berries and cream. It could use more of a citrus edge (there's some lovely lemon on the nose, but it doesn't translate well to the palate), and bitterness - ohhh, could these modern hazies use some bitterness!

To New Park's great credit, there is no astringent hop burn; this is a very well crafted and damn tasty beer. For me, however, the difference between these modern NE IPAs and the best NE IPAs (a la Tree House) is that those beers aren't afraid to still be bitter. They're perhaps less approachable to non-beer drinkers, but they're much more balanced.

Still, this is a creamy, smooth, soft, and damn tasty beer. It's flaws are less about the execution, or even design, and more about my personal preference.

    Selfmade Brewery - Emotional Distress

Slushy Sour with strawberry, cherry and apple puree, tonka bean and mint, from Russia (5.8%).

Pours an opaque, cherry red coloration with a small, fizzy head that disappears immediately. Smells of strawberry and cherry juicy, with some mint also coming through.

Taste is a good balance of sweet and slightly tart strawberry, cherry and apple juice, with a distinct mint presence and subtle hints of earthy, herbal tonka bean also coming through. Finishes sweet and slightly tart, with some strawberry, cherry, apple and mint lingering in the aftertaste. Thick, chewy mouthfeel with a medium body and low carbonation.

I'm not usually a huge fan of the boss pour, but it seemed strangely appropriate here. This is certainly something else, the first proper "Slushy Sour" that I've come across from Europe or at all so far. It's very fruity and super thick and chewy, feeling more like a fruit smoothie than a beer, really. The same goes for the taste, this really has nothing in common with beer anymore. There are no malts or hops evident in the taste, just pure fruit juice with a slightly alcoholic tinge. In fact, it reminds me a lot of a Strawberry Daiquiri.

At the same time, it never feels overy sweet or artificial though, with those slightly tart, herbal and earthy accents really balancing this out very nicely. Overall, I'm really torn on this one. While I did enjoy it for what it is and do think that it's very well done for the style, it's just not beer to me. A very enjoyable alcoholic fruit smoothie though, with a really well-balanced and interesting flavor profile.

I'm quite short on new-to-me Oktoberfest beers, so switching it up. Trooper IPA from Robinsons Brewery
    [IMG]

500mL bottle stamped L1082 (about 6 months old now) poured into a nonic pint glass at 55° Fahrenheit 4.3% ABV per label. The beer pours very bright, dark gold in color with bone colored head. The head recedes to a thin cap and leaves a little lacing. The aroma is mild with sweet malt and tea like hops. The taste is moderately bitter throughout with mild pale & toasted malt and floral and tea like hop notes. The mouthfeel is thin bodied & a bit watery with average carbonation and a mostly dry finish. Overall good English IPA.

I'm not a fan of session strength IPAs, but I love English malts and hops. Unfortunately, we see next to no British imports here in southern Indiana. I'll try anything I can get once.

...this is the first beer of the season for me re: Oktoberfest. And a fine one it is. It delivers a fine, mild malt-based lager flavor with an appropriate level of hop bitterness. It has enough gentle warmth to suggest a late summer / early fall character.
