Crystal Springs Brewing Co. -- Oktoberfest (German-style ale)

    4.28/5 rDev +6.5%
    look: 4 | smell: 4 | taste: 4.5 | feel: 4.25 | overall: 4.25

Beautifully clear, brown body; excellent slow rising carbonation; thick white head, creamy and stick; stringy patches of lacing streak the glass. Very appealing malt nose; earthy sweetness with a suggestion of roasted nuts; caramel. Extremely satisfying taste; rich brown malt note with hazelnut tones; sweet but subdued; moderate hop bitterness balances things out; almost smokey. Medium to heavy mouthfeel; fine residual sugar feel; nice dryness at the finish; lager-like smoothness despite being an ale.

The brewery doesn't provide a lot of information about what kind of ale this is, but it has strong characteristics of a rustic brown ale and a German altbier. Whatever it is and however they brewed it, this is one fine beer. I'd love to see this be a year-round offering, but will be looking for more soon. And being an ale for an Oktoberfest beer is certainly interesting, but it works.

Poured at 47 °F; no canning date info seen on the can.

    ------------

God, this beer tastes so good after knocking out a nearly 46 miles bicycle ride in the Denver metro area. My friend JR and I primarily followed the S. Platte River into downtown Denver and back. We did stop at Breckenridge Brewery for some food, but didn't have a beer (a Jarritos lime soda actually sounded and tasted better). Anyway, back in Colorado Springs, watching the NYJ / DEN game, and enjoying this unique Colorado Oktoberfest beer.

Hawk Moth Brewing & Beer Parlor Not for the Faint Old Ale, 12.0% ABV; 4.24 overall

Aged in Moscatel Barrels for 15 moths, finished with vanilla.

Pours an effervescent & slightly hazed caramel with on finger of fast falling tan head. Zero head retention & lacing

S: Sherry & red grapes, raisins & brown sugar, never smelled any vanilla, my only complaint, leather late

T: Follows the nose, plus barrel dryness, figs & leafy hops up front. Barrel dryness, figs, sweet red grapes & leafy hops along with a little booze on the tongue. Finishes with red grapes, barrel dryness, figs, dark cherry & a little white grape showing up as well

MF: Medium body, near zero carbonation, warming

A good take on the style, especially if you dig red grapes, me not that much. Having said that this was flavorful enough, but thinking I should saved it for the dead of winter. Will buy again I find it ( brewery purchase )

Well for some reason even though every fan, even the ones that have minimal football knowledge know that but management has ignored that for years. The fans booed Mara at halftime ruining the retiring of Mannings # jersey. Im thinking that may be the last straw. We have actual hard games for the next 5 or six weeks- not playing shitty teams. Looks like this could be worse than last year. Hard to believe.

I see about an 8-8 season for us. Could win the division though:stuck_out_tongue: If Washington had a QB, they would be killing it. I know off topic, but 3 pages, come on man!

Single Hill's fresh hop Per Diem Pale.

16oz can served in a snulip. No date on it. Bought it at Ridgewood Bottle and Tap two days ago.

Pours a moderately hazy light yellow with a fairly large head that collapses to a clumpy ring pretty quickly. Smell is herbal, almost minty green, leafy.

Taste is very nice -- this is a good model for a fresh hop pale ale. Pale ale lightness and balance and character is there, I get light grainy/breadiness -- balanced with really clear green fruit skin notes, maybe a bit of melon rind, and a good but not overwhelming dose of resin bitterness.

Mouthfeel is light, almost airy, dry and clean. Single Hill did a good job here.

New Park Expression Three NEIPA. Not much time for this review, the better half is finishing up a cast-iron steak that can't wait (!) This is another specimen from @Roguer's recent ninja box, and the upshot is that I like it better than yesterday's Heather. Appearance is similar, but with a longer-lasting head; taste profile much more complex, slightly more citrusy, more along the lines of Tree House in that regard. Would definitely drink this on the regular if I had the chance. Cheers, Andrew! And congratulations on the big day!

It was a great, comfortable day outside today here except for the hordes of mosquitos. We have had some West Nile cases nearby, so the prospect of getting eaten alive plus a risk of illness put a bit of a damper on things. I swear repellent actually attracts them. So a lot of back and forth outside and in. Fresh haddock for dinner - plain and simple bake with roasted veggies. Tasty...

    What is in the glass:

Burnside - an English style brown ale from Foundation Brewing.

It pours a crystal clear red-brown with a tan bubbly head that lasts a couple minutes and pretty much vanishes. There is a ring of little bubbles and some splotches left on the top, but eventually it looks like a flat cola.

The smell is malt-driven as it should be, with a little of this and that thrown in. Coffee, toffee, maybe some brown sugar, chocolate, nutty like almonds. Nice earthy note. Not a strong aroma and it pretty much hits all at once versus being layered.

The taste follows along pretty well, opening with toasty and biscuit-like malts, slightly sweet nuttiness. Then everyone is in the pool. Light Coffee and chocolate come along, then a caramel or toffee flavor plays nicely with some sweetness but not much. There is a definite hop presence in the earthy and very slightly spicey sense. It does finish sweet with the toffee lingering but I do get a nice spice sensation that keeps things in check.

The body...seems maybe a bit light for the style but that's a nitpick. Nice level of carbonation, a little bitter and the welcome spice bite that counters the lingering sweetness.

Good beer, here, and it ticks the style boxes well enough. Thinking around a 3.8 or so, but it could push a tad higher.

It's Oktoberfest season, so another new-to-me Oktoberfest beer today.

    Weltenburger Kloster Anno 1050
    ABV: 5.5%
    IBU: 24

Mostly clear light amber with sparse fine bubbles. 1 inch off white head, creamy, with decent retention, leaving sheets of lacing.

The aroma is faint. Bread is about all I get.

Nice flavor. Malty and bready, toast at the start. Slight bitterness in the middle, growing a bit into the finish. The back end picks up some spicy herbal hops providing a counterbalance to the bready malts. A bit sweet initially, but drying out toward with finish with a pretty much dry aftertaste. A very nicely put together märzen, if quite a bit less complex than some.

The mouth feel is light and smooth, body on the thin side.

Overall, this is a crisp, easy-drinking, light bodied märzen. It seems to fit in the middle between, say, the Ayinger and the lighter Festbier / Wiesnbier. Regardless of where you "slot" it, this is a good, enjoyable beer.

Hopworks Urban Brewery's Fresh Hop Ace of Spades. Regular Ace of Spades is a beer I've had a couple times, and had mixed results -- sometimes I love it, sometimes I have no idea why I loved it. I think it's because I didn't know at the time that age was important. I think I remember hearing that there was a fresh hop version last year, and this is the first time I've been able to get my hands on a can.

16oz can served in a snulip. Dated 14 sep 2021. Bought it at Ridgewood Bottle & Tap two days ago.

Pours a clear, dark golden color with a moderate head. Smell is light grainy sweetness and deep hoppy bitterness.

Taste is much more interesting than the aroma. I get a lot of honey sweetness, and a delicate floral note. Bitterness is there, lingering in the background at the beginning, deepening as it lingers. Booziness is there if I look for it, which is kind of impressive.

Mouthfeel is medium tending toward heavy, maybe slightly sticky. Overall, this is probably one of the most successful fresh hop imperial IPAs I've had.

Honestly, I'm excited to see fresh hop offerings that aren't from Oregon or Washington! Not that I'm sad to see OR or WA offerings...but it makes me sad that that's all I see.

Here’s some more PNW for us all @Nugganooch even the name of the beer.

When I read the description of this beer it got me very excited specifically this “chock full of all the pine” then something citrus zest and pineapple, but I was hooked at pine. Let’s see just how much…

    Stoup - Northwestiest

Pours an essentially crystal clear light gold, nice white head. Some splotchy lacing and a nice thin layer of creamy white persists.

The smell on this beer is very citrus forward, to me strong orange and then grapefruit. I also get the pineapple, maybe power of suggestion as it’s definitely not as prominent as the citrus for me. Resiny smells that remind me of the evergreen needles we kept snapping to smell on our mountain hike while we were there.

The flavors come out as suspected from the nose. Tastes like bitter orange with some sappy pine tastes as well.

It drinks really well, nice clean drinking beer. Medium body, moderate bitterness and finishes dry. It has a really pleasant and nice carbonation that aids in how clean this beer tastes.

Overall a very tasty and good beer. If this were a little more bitter and piney it would be a perfect ipa.

    Oktoberfest from High Cotton Brewing

Pours a clear, golden amber color with red highlights. Tan cap which quickly goes away with a small amount of lacing.

Aroma is primarily caramel and roasted malt. Hop presence is slight.

Taste is equal parts caramel and roasted malt with a noticeable but small element of roasted bitterness. Almost a coffee like touch in the aftertaste. Hops are only slightly hanging around. With that said the flavors are complementary and work well together.

    Medium texture with balancing carbonation.

My overall impression is of a clean, well made beer that hits the notes on pitch but the song isn't quite to my liking.

Tonight I tried a new beer from Fat Heads: The Dunk Dunkelweizen. A 5.2% dunkelweizen with chocolate, banana, bread, clove and bread notes. Good flavor and hopefully not just a one-off. Nice head as shown below and a good mouthfeel.

Named after Ohio's state fossil fish Dunkleosteus terrelli, a monster of a fish weighing over a ton. Cheers!

    Good evening NBW
A semi local brewery just released their BSDA aged in three different southern Indiana whiskey barrels.

This is BA Rose aged in Westfork Rye whiskey barrels
    [IMG]

16oz canned 9/10/21 (16 days ago) poured into a snifter at just above fridge temp 10.8% ABV. The beer pours dense dark brown with quickly fading khaki head. The head recedes to a few small bubbles around the glass. No lacing. The aroma is mild with dark fruit and oak. The taste is semisweet with spicy rye whiskey up front slowly fading to vanilla, oak and rich malt on the back end. Minimal bitterness or hop presence. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with average carbonation and a somewhat dry finish. Overall, good. These fresh rye barrels really hijacked the Belgian Strong Dark Ale.

This can of rye is definitely not as good as the bourbon aged I had last week. I'll give it some time to get together before sampling the others.

    Cheers all!
