Welcome to New Beer Weekend #63, and tomorrow wherever you are New Beer Sunday #867. Still awake vs. just getting up, and a new beer is calling. We welcome new participants, across the globe. Any new to you beer, be it a new beer release or one around for decades you are (hopefully) enjoying for the first time. Please share your experience, what you see, smell, taste, feel, and an overall impression. A picture if you can manage. Conversations about other posts are also welcome.

I have two Three Floyd beers this weekend. Haven't picked their beers up much since they permanently closed their brewpub last March. Heard about their fresh hop beer so I picked that up and in addition, this one released a month earlier.

    Bottle Notes:
12 oz, bottled 8/16/21, purchased the single bottle at room temperature $3.90 plus tax from Bottles and Cans Too on Thursday, refrigerated since. 7.5% ABV. A single-hopped IPA brewed with Strata hops. He Dwells on a Great Mountain, What use to call on him? Little he cares if men live or die. Better be silent than to call his attention to you; He will send you dooms, not fortune.

Appearance: Golden hazy pour into a nonic pint glass, floaters seen in the bottom of the bottle and through the haze, creamy rich head leaves generous lacing and cover over the base. 3.75

    Aroma:
Bursts with aroma upon opening the bottle. Dank grapefruit and tropical fruit, getting pineapple most of all among the medley. Nice piney dankness provides balance, does not smell overly sweet. 4.25

    Taste:
Tastes like it smells but much bolder, if that is even possible. The stickiest of the sticky dank pine leads this one, proudly and with authority. Pushing their way to my taste buds is the sweet fruit, pineapple and grapefruit mostly, however more reserved than the aroma and complementing well. Also getting strawberry and a nice black ground pepper backing. A cornucopia a flavors, and I am enjoying this immensely. 4.5

    Mouthfeel:
Light to medium body, balanced with dank bitterness balanced with sweet fruit looking to escape. Lightly dry. ABV felt midway in, thoroughly enjoying, not overpowering. Light dank sticky aftertaste. 4.25

    Overall:
Very glad I picked this up. I believe this is my first Strata hop standalone beer, and I am really enjoying this. Balanced and excellent. Think I'm grabbing more this week, and definitely next time I see. 4.5

Wishing you an equally enjoyable beer to kick off your weekend!

Musical accompaniment, the Bangles cover of Hazy Shade of Winter, first featured on the Less Than Zero soundtrack, this version live from ten years ago.

    The end of Festing!?!

Tomorrow (Oct. 3rd) would have been the official end date for the Munich Oktoberfest if it had occurred this year. Does this mean the ‘end’ of Oktoberfest beer drinking? Well not for me. This past week we had the first days were there was just a slight cool nip in the air, my preferred time to drink Oktoberfest beers.

Today’s beer is a ‘new’ beer from Bitburger; first brewed last year. Below is a press release description:

“Bitburger Festbier, a full-bodied yet a delicately malty and clear amber beer, will conjure up Oktoberfest memories for those who have experienced the festivities and will allow first timers to experience the season in the comfort of their home. A very special malt composition, including Pilsner Malt, Mu¨nchner Malt and light Caramel Malt, accounts for its fine color and smooth body. Additionally, the beer is refined with Bitburger’s proprietary and unique hop blend called ‘Siegelhopfen’ (seal hops), which is sourced from a farm just a few minutes from the brewery. This drinkable 6.2% ABV full-bodied beer is the perfect marriage of hops and malt with a slightly sweet backbone, while finishing dry. It’s perfect to pair with traditional Oktoberfest fare such as sausages, pretzels, and cheese.”

    https://www.brewbound.com/news/bitburger-brewery-releases-festbier

I was unable to find this beer last year but luckily I was able to purchase it this year.

One aspect I would like to highlight in the above quote verbiage: “amber beer”. So despite Bitburger branding this beer as “Festbier” this appears to be an Amber Oktoberfest beer.

It seems to be popular on BA to conduct an annual ‘debate’ on the topic of Amber Oktoberfest (or sometimes called Märzen) vs. Pale Oktoberfest (or sometimes called Festbier). You can read more about this topic and other Oktoberfest topics here:

    https://www.morebeer.com/articles/Oktoberfest_Beer

I am quite intrigued to see what a Bitburger Amber Oktoberfest beer tastes like especially considering they use a proprietary blend of hops to brew this beer.

Served in my Polish Pilsner glass:

    Appearance:

Copper colored with a 3 finger white head.

    Aroma:

The aroma is mostly a combination of bready and biscuity but in the background there is some herbal hop aroma.

    Taste:

The flavor follows the nose bready/biscuity flavor but there is some caramel-like flavor as well. The hop aspect is a tad more notable with flavors of herbal/spicy. There is a low-moderate bitterness.

    Mouthfeel:

A medium body with an off-dry finish.

    Overall:

I enjoyed drinking this beer. It is malt forward which is appropriate for the style but I did enjoy the hops which provided some balance to the beer.

    Cheers!

Good morning BAs, and specifically you NBW participants and lurkers. Today I have a Crowler of beer I bought from my local bottle shop had on tap. We sat down for a couple beers and some food from this shop for the first time in over a year and a half, and it was a very nice afternoon./early evening.

On our way out, I tasted a few beers and City-State Brewing (had a style I don't see too often, especially distributed - a dark wheat ale. It tasted pretty good in the sampler cup, so I purchased 32oz for consumption and then returned home to look up some info about City-State Brewing, a "brand new" DC brewery.

Short notes, they opened in June of this year, and claim to be a "a craft brewery, taproom, arts venue and event space." They have 8 beers listed, and 3 are pale ales, 2 variations on a Kölsch, a Pilsner, and a pub ale besides the dark wheat shown here. Although we will be in the city today, I don't think we'll have time to stop by - but we most likely will at some point.

Anyhow, we didn't delve into Equal Marriage that evening, but the benefit is that it slipped into the weekend so I can share it here. Let's give it a look-see...
(improper glassware alert: should be sunrise wheat)

Keeping in mind it is a three-day old Crowler pour**
The head seemed to be struggling even as the dark liquid glugged into the glass over the high lip of the Crowler top. The lightly tanned bubbles hung on for the better part of a minute before giving into the thin ring that surrounds the surface. I vaguely recall a little better performance straight from the tap, but wouldn't stake anything on it.

The liquid allows light to shine through in points, showing a dark liquid that I will sip before smelling. Quick impressions - pumpernickel, weak coffee, banana, a little orange rind; nearing medium feel, and carbonation level is a little light**

Back to the nose, there's a sort of spiced coffee impression that hits me first. Digging in, a little of the pumpernickel comes through morphing into a dry banana bread aroma. Sipping again, there's a light sweetness, and I'm having trouble placing what counters that to balance things, but I think it might be the roasted grain notes that I am getting at the edges.

I am recognizing the qualities from what I was getting earlier this week, which I can say with some confidence because this is the only dark wheat beer I've had this week. It's not impressing me as much in this pour, but I think circumstances may be altering things a tad.

At the very least, this experience is not dissuading me from finding some time to visit the brewery. The GF says it tastes pretty good to her. Cheers, new beer sippers!

** of note, sometimes I open a Crowler and the beer is gushing out from an overfull pour. The store does purge cans before filling, but this can had a bit of head space when I opened it.

Saw that beer at the store as well, but we still have a bunch of IPAs from our trip up north, I reluctantly skipped it. Now I sorta wished I had just grabbed one four pack (we had cans on the shelf).

I'm with you, here, Jack. I just purchased a handful of local Oktoberfests packaged no earlier than mid-August for consumption. I don't think I'll get to them all for the tasting thread, but that won't stop my enjoyment (hopefully) of the beers well beyond "official" celebration end.

Good morning, fellow Weekenders, and a big thanks to @ChicagoJ for once again getting us off to a fantastic start!

I've got plenty of new beer for a change, some of which I saved for this weekend, and some of which I just picked up yesterday. I will be packing up some boxes today for the related NBS BIF, and my partner and I will be enjoying a lazy day of sharing beers (well, except the IPAs; those are mine, thankfully :stuck_out_tongue: ). And housework, which isn't so lazy, but needs to be done.

First up: Tree House Quadruple Shot - Vanilla Cold Brew.

I love coffee, and I like coffee in beer, but this is an intimidating label. "Quadruple shot;" "cold brew;" just how much coffee are we talking???

On the nose: lots. I get the rich earthy and even berry tones I get from fantastic African coffees (Sumatra, Ethiopian, et al). And yes, there's definitely vanilla on the nose. There's a bit of overlap on the earthy and sweet notes between coffee and vanilla, even though they approach that overlap from opposite directions.

On the palate, this is more of a dessert stout. It's not as sweet as some birthday cupcake pastry stout, but it is sweeter than "just" a coffee stout. That sweetness comes from the malt base and vanilla, primarily. There's still plenty of coffee, and it's got staying power, lasting with you through the finish, which is primarily where the berry notes from the nose finally reemerge.

There's a ton going on if you're trying to describe the tasting notes: caramel, coffee, toffee, honeycomb, molasses, vanilla, chocolate, chewy toast; bark and leather on the finish, along with coffee and berries. Moderate bitterness from char and coffee; no noticeable hop presence.

The result is a lush, moderately sweet, rich, and decadent experience.

Ah, OK. I will be heading to my local Wegman's today or tomorrow. Hopefully they have it.

My local distributors haven't had it, so far. One didn't know that it existed.

Burst IPA from Fox Farm Brewery

Slightly hazy light golden color with white cap and good lacing.

Aroma of bright citrus with herbal hops that have a bit of sharpness. This is a clean scent that has an air of almost Spring like freshness.

Taste is a beautiful balance of citrus juiciness and hop bitterness. Citrus influence is more zest like than fruit juice because the citrus flavors have an edge we would normally associate with hops. The hops are certainly there but sing a complementary converging melody. Clean finish with a pleasant lingering aftertaste.

Medium slightly creamy texture with balancing carbonation.

All in all a Goldilocks beer which is to say not too light, not too strong, just right.

It's a New Tree House Beer Weekend, friends; let's keep it going!

Gggreennn! is the amped-up version of Green, itself an absolutely tremendous IPA. I can't think of a brewer of modern NE IPAs that as consistently delivers and amazes as Tree House, and I'm including Trillium and Tired Hands in that conversation. (Classical music has the "Three Bs;" NE IPAs has the "Three Ts," perhaps.)

Sure enough: this delivers. At 7.5%, it's just a bit lighter and more watery than their IIPAs. It's just as smooth and creamy, but isn't quite as full bodied.

Naturally, it's unbelievably juicy, hopped to high heaven in all phases, yet lacks any of the hop burn or astringency of lesser breweries. It's opaque, pulpy, and hazy, without any floaties; "unfiltered" isn't simply an excuse for them (looking at the aptly named Foreign Objects there :stuck_out_tongue: ). It's beyond juicy, but it has a strong amount of bitterness, reminding you that it's an IPA - or, in this era of 0-IBU juice bombs, reminding you that it's a beer.

Tasting notes include pineapple, tangerine, lemon, mango, and grapefruit peel (particularly on the semi-dry finish).

This is awesome, and I don't consider it near their best.

Last time we'll be at the lake until next spring. It's a chilly, overcast day tailor made for a fire and a few beers. Up first is Wheat Bock, a dry hopped wheat ale from Ever Grain brewing in Camp Hill, PA. I received this from @sulldaddy a few months ago and am finally getting around to giving it a try.

Beer pours a hazy burnt orange with a nice amount of fluffy white head with solid retention and decent lacing. Overall, an attractive beer. Aroma has loads of citrusy hops. If I smelled this blind, I would not pick up that it was a wheat ale at its base. The hops are a little more subdued on the tongue than on the nose. The flavor profile overall is a little weak for an 8% beer. Not bad, just punching a little below its weight. There are some citrus notes with the wheat beer more noticeable on the finish. The wheat base does contribute to a softer feel. Good beer. Thanks, Sully!

Great Raft Rindstone Life, a Wheat IPA with grapefruit, 7.0% ABV; 4.15 overall

Pours a hazed gold with a pinky of beige head. Great lacing & head retention

S: Plenty of grapefruit, the featured ingredient

Grapefruit, green melons, dryness , some lime up front. Sweet pink grapefruit & line, plus dryness as this warms. Finishes dry with plenty of pink grapefruit, both sweet & a little bitter

MF: Medium body, soft carbonation, nice balance

Nice flavor, super easy to drink, ABV is well hidden

A new pumpkin beer from Clown Shoes

    Pumpkin Sombrero
    [IMG]

16oz can stamped 07/19/21 (about 10 weeks old) poured into a nonic pint glass at fridge temp 7% ABV. The beer pours bright medium brown in color with sticky light brown head. The head recedes to a thin cap and leaves rings of lacing around the glass. The aroma is pumpkin, pumpkin spice and pepper. The taste is semisweet roasty malt with pumpkin and sweeter pie spice before the chocolate and pepper heat finish things off. Mild bitterness. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with average carbonation and a mostly dry finish. Overall, good although I prefer the original Chocolate Sombrero.

    Sweetwater Brewing HAZY IPA

Hazy light yellow gold color with solid white cap and lacing.

Nice citrus aroma, I get something like ripe pineapple but could easily add a few more tropical fruit aromas. A more earthy sort of ripe fruit aroma.

Taste on entry is rich, ripe, full citrus. No shrinking violet here, this stuff comes on full blast. That's not to say brash, rather straight forward with no apology. My first thought is full flavor yet I'm also struck by balance of flavors. I've had IPAs that were over citrus or over hoppy but this one goes in a straight line down the middle. Clean finish with pleasant lingering aftertaste.

Medium full texture with balancing carbonation.

Very good example of an NEIPA from a Brewery that routinely hits home runs.

Aroma is citrus, pine, apricot, and grapefruit. 4

Taste follows citrus, apricot, pine, and grapefruit really well balanced, crisp clean, with little bitterness. 4

Mouthfeel is about average, plenty of carbonation, maybe a touch dry, and at 6.5% it goes down very easy and drinks exactly like that. 4

Overall this is really nice, almost drinks like a hoppy lager. Well done, a hot weather crusher. 4 Cheers all.

One box packed, another mostly ready (just awaiting some mystery label creation, and some research to double-check my target's reviews); it's time for another beer.

For New Beer #3, I'm going back to Tree House (I intend to change things up in a bit, but we'll see!): Very Hazy, a definite want of mine, and the #4 rated NE IPA on the site (#11 beer overall) - for whatever that's worth.

Right up front: this doesn't crack my personal top 15. #16 is pretty darn high praise, I'd say. :stuck_out_tongue:

This is simply an incredible juice bomb. As I mentioned in my review, this is what other breweries are trying to emulate when they add fruit, lactose, wheat, and oats to their IIPAs, and Tree House pulls it off without any of those tricks.

Did I say juice bomb? It's a juice bomb. The nose has an incredible balance of tropical and citrus fruit, mild dankness, and a bit of green herbal edge. The palate is sweeter and juicier, and lacks the complexity of the nose; it's not quite one-note, still, and the notes it does deliver are, in the parlance of younger generations, bomb. Relatively mild but still present bitterness.

After a great IPA earlier, this is the mouthfeel for which Tree House is renowned. Quite simply, it's perfect.

As good as this beer is, I'm not finding the hop expression quite as complex and challenging as Heady or Pliny. It's super lush and juicy, without question, and absolutely delicious. (And in the wife test: she didn't like it at all, which means it's definitely still an IPA! :stuck_out_tongue: ) So, if I find it doesn't quite live up to its lofty status, it's less because of any flaws I find in this beer, and more because I respect those beers even more.

    Full review below, as always.

    Good afternoon all!

My first new beer this weekend is more of a "tick" for me than a beer I was particularly looking forward to. This is Wren House - Spellbinder a NE style IPA. I picked this up because I had yet to review an Arizona beer so this was a perfect opportunity. Apparently this also won a GABF medal, so its got to be decent.

The first impression of this one is a beautiful pungent fruity aroma - notes of peach, citrus, mango, tangerine, and some light English yeast notes. There is a light green hop note on the back end, but its very light and works nicely with the fruitiness. In terms of appearance its a pretty standard NE style IPA - bright orange/yellow, completely opaque, a tad on the sludgy side. There is a nice, tight white head on this that is about 2 or 3 fingers when it first forms and actually shows incredible head retention. The top of the beer is always covered by some foam.

Taste has notes of grassy hops, some earthy / woody bark notes, tangerine, mango, and peach. What is striking here is that unlike the pungent, rich aroma, the taste is rather watery and verging into bland. I expected so much more given how bright that aroma was, but the taste just leaves me wanting more. Light bitterness is noted on the finish. Feel is light to medium bodied. Smooth with vibrant carbonation.

Overall its a solid NE style IPA. I would not seek it out, but I also wouldn't turn it down.

    My BA score: 4.5 | 4.5 | 3.5 | 4 | 3.75 = 3.9 (-7.1% rDev)

I had to push Sober October back to Monday, as I wanna get rid of the last of beer in my fridge over the weekend, but hey, those three days are no big deal, right.

    Selfmade Brewery - Jungle Threat

Smoothie Sour with apple, kiwi and calamansi puree, from Russia (5.6%).

Pours an opaque, grass green coloration with a small, fizzy head that quickly fades away. Smells of green apples and lime, with a hint of kiwi coming through as well.

Taste is a great balance of quite fresh and vibrant fruit notes of tart green apple, lime and lighter kiwi. Finishes with a light tartness and some apple and lime lingering in the aftertaste. Thick, chewy mouthfeel with a medium body and low carbonation.

Just like the last ones I had from Selfmade, these are the first proper "Smoothie" or "Slushie" Sours that I have come across in Europe. While this does not have much in common with beer anymore, really being more similar to an alcoholic fruit smoothie in taste and texture, it is rather enjoyable in its own way.

It really does feel quite fresh and natural, with a great balance of quite zesty lime, tart apple and sweet kiwi notes, never seeming overly sweet or artificial. While the texture isn't quite as rich as with the other two, probably because calamansi doesn't have much flesh to it, it's still distinctly thick, giving a very unique mouthfeel to this.
