Good Sunday afternoon, New Beer Swiggers and commentators. This is one of my favorite times of the year; early autumn, with warm, sunny days but low humidity. I have to get in as much deck drinking as possible before November's grayer, colder days. My first review today is from one of my favorite brewers, District 96 Beer Factory. Enjoy the Snake, a Northeast IPA, was released yesterday so its uber fresh. While most D96 beers are politically-themed, the brewery prides itself on a unique "snake fruit" flavor and has adopted the snake as its "mascot." I haven't researched this, and I may be mistaken, but I don't think D96 has brewed many IPAs with Nelson hops. So I really wanted to try this one.

It pours a turbid, pastel yellow-tan with a full finger of creamy, milky-white head and thick, clinging lacing. A very pretty pour. The nose is fruity and tropical with lemon, lime, tangerine, melon, and a whiff of white wine grape. The taste opens like vintage D96: highly fruity with both tart lemon and grapefruit and sweeter tropical notes. The Motueka (one of my favorite hops) is used well. There is also a subtle hint of berry which I assume comes from the Pacific Sunrise hops. But at mid-sip the Nelson hops take center stage with dry white wine grape. There is also a slightly spicy earthiness that balances the tropical sweetness. At the finish is D96's signature snake fruit taste: which I can best describe as bitter pineapple. It finishes quite clean with minimal hop bitterness and no yeast burn. This ale is moderately thick and creamy with pleasant carbonation, and it's easily drinkable at 6.8% ABV. Overall, Enjoy the Snake is a very solid Northeast IPA. It's not as tropical as many of D96's IPAs but it's not intended to be. Anyone who enjoys Nelson Sauvin hops will really like this ale.

Loved catching up so far, cheers to the weekend. My sister in law got married yesterday, and I was on daddy duty all weekend nonstop since driving to Annapolis Friday night for our ring bearer boys. I don’t know the last time I was this exhausted. Finally my first beer of the weekend. Im gonna try and make up for lost weekend beers and keep it going today.

@TongoRad pointed out that halftime beverage was selling singles of lager fest beers a month back. He mentioned this one, naturally I had to include it in my order, I’m very glad I did…

urban chestnut - stammtisch (june 21 bottling)

Cloudy straw color with shades of yellow, very nice perfectly white head with great retention and very nice lacing. This beer is very nice to look at, especially as I drink it down.

This beer screams German pils, I could smell it the second I poured it. Peppery, earthy, spicey noble hop aromas jump out of this one. I also want to say thin crispy crackers.

Taste much like the nose, hops come out as peppery and grassy and the malt is minor in the form of crackers or water crackers. Meaning very subtle and just enough there to let the hops ride on.

Mouthfeel is great too! Super dry, light bodied beer. Goes down super clean with a really nice bitter bite.

Ok this is exactly what I want a German pils to taste like. Hoppy, grassy bitter and super dry. Its perfect for this hot fall weather we have today here in NJ.

    In @TongoRad we trust!

Transient Something Strange Rye IPA, being a huge rye IPA fan, I had high hopes for this one. For me the rye works best in an WC style with high bitterness and hops galore. This beer is NE style and although still enjoyable, didn’t do it for me. Beautiful pour with hugh pillowy head that stays long, aroma is faint, taste is orange, pear, tropical fruit, sweet, overall nothing on stage in the beer and a bit muted. Will be interested to see my targets review of this one. Hint hint

    Apex Brewing - Nuclear Option

New England IPA with Zappa, Belma and Mosaic hops, from Sweden (6.5%).

Pours a hazy, bright orange coloration with a medium, fluffy head. Smells of light biscuity malt and citrus/tropical/berry hops, with notes of grapefruit, passion fruit and blueberry, as well as some distinct herbal and earthy accents.

Taste is a great balance of light biscuity malt and fruity, juicy, herbal, earthy, slightly resinous hops, with citrus and lighter tropical and berry notes of grapefruit, orange, passion fruit, pineapple, blueberry and strawberry as well as a distinct, musty earthiness and hints of mint and pine also coming through. Finishes with a medium bitterness and some grapefruit, passion fruit, mint and earthiness lingering in the aftertaste. Soft mouthfeel with a medium body and carbonation.

The unusual hop varieties used here make for quite a unique flavor profile that's quite earthy and herbal, with some berries coming through as well. It's probably the Zappa hops which are responsible for that herbal, quite earthy, musty, almost woody character here, while Belma and Mosaic bring those berry notes to the table. While this kind of flavor profile is not going to be for everyone, I can quite enjoy it personally and applaud Apex for trying something a bit different.

I also think that it's well-balanced with those more unusual notes being kept in check nicely enough by some more typical, juicy citrus and tropical notes, while the beer finishes with a nice, slightly resinous bitterness. Much better and more interesting than the last beer I had by Apex just yesterday, with a good body and mouthfeel as well.

    Afternoon NBS.
My Giants finally opened up the offense, played a competitive game and won. If you like QB play you have to like Daniel Jones. He had a monster game and is the real deal.
Todays first new beer is a little unusual and I am happy about that.
    Proclamation Ale Pearanormal
Oak aged ale and pear cider blend.
Pouring a clear golden yellow with a bleach white highly effervescent very short lived head.
The smell is quite funky upon opening and sticking my nose in the can. After pouring the nose opens to barnyard funk and hay, spring rose, granny smith apple, oak and some white wine with pear rounding it out.
The taste starts with a tiny hit of citrus/lemon. then some oak with a bit of astringency, funky notes of hay and grass. Then the pear becomes the star of the show with a fruity pear wine like quality. Its momentarily sweet and chunky but dries so quickly. No hint of the 5.5%. The body is medium/light and Its slightly acidic and tart and tangy. And damn tasty!
Liking this one alot. Another Proclo winner! Cheers![IMG]

Next up: Persist, a blended BBA imperial stout from Tree House, including 60% stout aged in maple bourbon barrels for a minimum of 22 months.

Predictably, this beer has a sky-high rating. I'm not willing to go that far, but it is a very, very good beer - in fact, it's excellent! It may not live up to the hype, but it's really darn good.

Standing in between this beer and world-class status is, honestly, so many other damn amazing barrel aged beers, including those from Fremont, Transient, and Cigar City. It's just not quite on that level. Certainly, don't let that discourage you from picking up a bottle, because with those disclaimers out of the way ... wow, this is still really good!

Notes of bourbon, oak, maple, chocolate, coffee, toffee, caramel, brown sugar, vanilla, nuts, and toast. Mouthfeel is a shocking letdown for Tree House; not only is it fizzy, but it's hot and boozy on par with beers like Bourbon County (which itself clocks in at 50% higher ABV).

Next up for me is a beer I purchased yesterday at the brewery: The Drowned Lands' Autumn Terra. All of Drowned Lands' IPAs have an earthy quality from the excellent use of malts. This is no exception. The Chrystal malts gives it a depth of sweetness that compliments the fruit notes from the Mosaic, Wakatu, and Azacca hops. This brewery is making some great beer! And while distribution has reached our area it is sporadic and I like to visit the brewery. It's about an hour away and within easy driving distance of Tin Barn and Rushing Duck. The brewery itself is housed in a former state school and the tasting room is like visiting a spa.

Cans were released on 9/24 so 9 days old when reviewed. It pours an opaque, dirty tangerine color with a luxurious, creamy, egg-white had and thick, elegant lacing. The nose is a bit subdued but I can smell pineapple, tangerine, and melon. The Crystal malt adds an earthy sweetness. The taste opens with lime from the Wakatu hops, ripe melon and berry from the Mosaic, and mango from the Azacca. The Crystal malt adds sweetness and depth. There is little bitterness and just a touch of dryness at the finish. This ale is creamy and moderately viscous with just the right level of carbonation. The 8.2% ABV gives it good substance. Overall, Autumn Terra is delightful to drink. It's flavorful and substantial yet easy to drink. The Drowned Lands is brewing some excellent DIPAs.

    look: 4 | smell: 4 | taste: 3.25 | feel: 3.5 | overall: 3.5

Soft, pale yellow body, semi-cloudy; nice head, white and semi-creamy. Nice citrus note on the nose; lemon; nectarine; bready. Light citrus flavor; a bit watery; minimal hop taste. Medium body; slightly sharp and tart on the palate; watery.

This is a fine looking beer with a nice aroma, but the taste and mouthfeel are weak. Brewed with Phantasm powder and Mosaic hops with lactose, yet there is little hop flavor intensity and the body doesn't suggest any lactose.

Poured at 45 °F; no canning data seen on the can.

    -------------

...it's a mystery to me how a DDH IPA with Phantasm powder and lactose can come across so weak and watery in the taste and mouthfeel departments, but it's happened here...

Pours an effervescent honey color with one finger of beige head. Average head retention & lacing

S: Bready, floral hops, cakey once warm

T: Brown bread, grassyness, dryness a little herbal hop up front. A touch of brown sugar mixes in with dryness and sweet breadyness, plus a little grassyness as this warms. Finishes dry, sweet, grainy & grassy

MF: Medium body, low carbonation, a little gritty

Pours a semi-opaque dirty yellow with a finger of medium density white head. Decent retention. Loads of hoppy aromas wafting out of the glass. Mostly fruity / tropical notes that make for an overall appealing aroma. Taste is interesting. My immediate knee jerk reaction (like the first 1-2 seconds once it hit the tongue) wasn't all that great, but then the taste quickly evolved into something I found much more pleasing. Lots of pineapple and citrus, and an overall taste that somehow reminds me of Hawaiian flavored life savers (but not in a cloying sweet kind of way). Feel is a little thin, but with a nice semi-dry finish. Good beer.

Thanks, Peter. I'm enjoying this one quite a bit!

    FrauGruber - Fruits on Dope

New England IPA with Citra Incognito, Mosaic Incognito/Spectrum, Galaxy, Enigma and Motueka hops, from Germany (8.3%).

Pours a hazy, bright orange coloration with a medium, fluffy head. Smells of light biscuity malt and faint citrus/tropical hops, with notes of lime peel and passion fruit.

Taste is a good balance of light biscuity malt and fruity, juicy, slightly dank and grassy hops, with citrus, tropical and lighter berry notes of orange, lime, passion fruit, papaya and white grape, as well a the merest hint of grassy weed. Finishes with a light bitterness and some lime peel and passion fruit lingering in the aftertaste. Soft mouthfeel with a medium body and carbonation.

While the aroma left me slightly disappointed initially, the taste is a bit better, with some quite varied, although still feeling kinda washed out hop notes of citrus, tropical fruit and berries, with the somewhat zesty citrus notes dominating here, as seems to be typical of Motueka with those distinct lime peel notes.

While those fruits also feel just a tad overripe, with there being just a tad of booziness to this as well, it still drinks easily enough for the ABV. Overall, this makes for a nice New England IPA with a quite varied, although not too vibrant, hop profile and a good body and mouthfeel.

    Another NBS entry:
    Long Live Beerworks
Through These Eyes, DDH DIPA with Galaxy, Citra Lupulin Powder and Rakau
Pouring a milky yellow with a creamy white white head that has excellent retention and leaves lots of sticky rings of lacing.
The smell super ripe tropical - Pineapple, Mango, Passionfruit, tangerine, and dank cannabis and a touch of banana. Wow.
The huge cornucopia of ripe fruits continues with the tropicals and citrus, bubblegum and a little bit of green bud and hop bitterness finishing with a slight oily slickness that dries at the front. Its soft, medium/thick and creamy with little carbonation. Little sign of the 8.2%
Really good brew. If this was a blind tasting I would pick this as something from Treehouse. And I mean upper tier like King Julius. No wonder this little brewery on the West Side of Providence has been getting so much attention. A real winner. Cheers.[IMG]

I remember hating cilantro as a kid because of that @Whyteboar. Mom always made salsa with it and I’d tell her it tasted like dish soap. Weird though cause at some point that change and whenever I make guac put heaps of cilantro in it.

For my next (last?) new beer, I'm going with yet another Tree House offering: Juice Machine, originally brewed for none other than BeerAdvocate's Extreme Beer Fest.

This is what I was hoping for from my previous TH (I)PAs, honestly. I'm not saying it's better, or that you will like it more; in fact, I think the mouthfeel is just a hair shy of perfect (whereas the other two were, well, perfect). But the hop expression is more complex and nuanced. It's juicy, without a doubt, but there's more bitterness, more citrus, and more of a green herbal edge - all this in a beer canned 3 days ago.

This is a beer that is honestly near the top - not quite Heady or Pliny status (for me), but absolutely within the same tier. Full tasting notes in the review below.

    Brouwerij Bosteels - Tripel Karmeliet

Belgian Tripel with Styrian hops, from Belgium (8.4%).

Pours a clear, deep golden coloration with a large, fluffy head and visible carbonation. Smells of doughy, slightly grainy and caramelly malt and citrus zest, with estery hints of green apple and clove as well.

Taste is an excellent balance of doughy, slightly grainy and caramelly malt, hoppy citrus notes and fruity/spicy yeast esters of green apple, banana, clove and peppery spice. finishes with a medium sweetness and some caramel malt, citrus zest and peppery spice lingering in the aftertaste. Effervescent mouthfeel with a medium/rich body and medium/strong carbonation.

This makes for quite a hoppy Tripel with some distinct, zesty citrus notes in addition to those fruity and spice yeast esters, with it being quite well-balanced overall though. There really is an excellent balance of sweet malt, zesty hops and spicy yeast to this, making for a brew that feels rich and refreshing, complex and easy-drinking at the same time, while the ABV is hardly noticeable as well and there really is a fantastic, full and effervescent mouthfeel to this.

Overall, this makes for a great Tripel that is perhaps a bit more hoppy than you would expect from the style, but balanced so well that it really makes for an exceptionally pleasant drinking experience.

A new one for me this weekend. At Southern Yankee Craft House for some lunch. Which I like to call the "tied house" restaurant and bar for said brewery. A really good addition inside the Houston loop.

Hop Rambler, Double/Imperial IPA with Idaho 7 and Mosaic Hops. 9.4% ABV

Pours with a slight haze, that clears up after a few minutes. A two finger white head forms, and recedes quickly; Light lace is left behind.
A big pungent aroma up front and center. A mix of citrus, orange, pineapple, and even tangerine. Kind of a fruit salad aroma but it all works, with an earthy tea like finish.
Taste wise the fruity flavors are up front as well. Orange, citrus, pineapple, tangerine. Earthy tea like hops, and a woody flavor going on. Which I can get with IPA's. Just a touch of toasted malts, and lingering bitterness.
A medium to full body. Crisp carbonation that is smooth and clean at the same time. Finishes dry. An enjoyable IPA to come back to and drink. I like it.

Another good one from Southern Yankee. Plenty of fruity characteristics going on, without being sweet at all really. The bitterness is strong and assertive, but at the same time doesn't get in the way of my enjoyment. Which is a delicate balance of the style, and I appreciate that. Well done.

Overall score is 4.06, which is an A- for me.
