Allagash (2021)

6.66%, right in the slot for Black Ale or a Belgian Dark. Triporteur From Hell by BOMBrewery is also rated at 6.66%. I would really like to try that on if it ever comes back around.

 

I'm almost positive it was styled as a Belgian Dark at one time.

 

I've always wondered how they can dial the ABV in with that degree of accuracy, out to the second decimal place.

 

I believe it's a tolerance issue. I know that a restaurant can sell a 12-oz. fillet that is only 11.5-oz and be within the law. I'm guessing the same applies to brewing beer. Haunted House might actually be 6.5%ABV. Cheers.

 

I think it still is, it's not labeled as a Black IPA. The only place that calls it a Black IPA is BeerAdvocate. The can says Hoppy Dark Ale and Untappd labels it as a Dark Ale (which I'm surprised Untappd and Beer Advocate differ since I thought they shared the same base database). Allagash's description is that it's a mix of their House Beer and a Porter. The House Beer is a Belgian Ale so Haunted House should be a Belgian Ale with dark malts. They amp up the ABV vs the House Beer as well. Now I'm not a beer style expert, and I can't spell BJCP, so maybe Black IPA is still an appropriate name for the style but my recollection is that the taste was different than a Black IPA. I haven't had this years version so maybe it leans more towards Black IPA but I am on the look out for the beer to try it.

 

The only Belgian Dark Ale that I have tried is Leffe, it was brown. BDAs are under the Brown Ale category so this fits the style.
Haunted House is almost black, it has coffee and chocolate flavors like Porter however not the bigger feel.
Good call on HH being styled as a BIPA by this site and yes it's hop profile is herbal/floral as apposed to the typical pine/citrus of an IPA.
Looks and feel of a BIPA, I don't think Allagash intended Haunted House to fit any BA style....or the other BA. Cheers.

Haunted House is tasty. Very creamy not too hoppy. I’m reading this thread on the subway and am looking forward to cracking one open after a quick hello to wife and child upon my arrival.

 

That would make for a real nice gift for a veteran…
