I bought a Dogfish Head Utopias Barrel-aged world wide stout this week. The date code is D 2421 1512 11. I can't figure out what this date format is. Does anyone know? I'm trying to figure out if it's the 2020 one or the 2021 one. Their website has this information but none of those formats match what is on my bottle. The date code might be D 24211512 11. I don't know if there's a space or not in between the 1's.
My initial thought is 242nd day of 2021. Early September give or take. Either way, the date isn't super critical on this 15-18 abv beast... Or is it?!?
I highly doubt you have a 2020 on your hands. I don't believe they distro'd out of Delaware for the 2020's and even then, they disappeared in stores pretty quickly.
I got some 2020’s in a trade, which have normal dating structure. The 2021s found their way here…without any fanfare you GD cicerone’s…that’s a different story, but that whacky stuff is definitely 2021.
Sure that 2421 isn’t really a 2021? That website link seems to indicate it “should” be the year. I’ll check mine later.
The packaged on date is a julian date format DDDY ('2421') as @MistaRyte mentioned. So your bottle was packaged on Aug 30, 2021. I have a bottle dated 2701 so it was about a month later. I think most, if not all, DFH beers have a DDDY packaged on date. I recall their IPAs do anyway.
It was great! Not as booze-forward / boozy as I thought it would be given the other reviews I read, which was nice.
I had the same exact experience. I think all the reviews I had read prepared me for alcohol heat that to my palate ended up being pretty mild for a 17% ABV beer. The sweetness in the finish probably helped mask some of the heat as well. Fantastic beer, though.
