doh. Yes.

 

I agree with you on the ugly part (well, excluding the trend of 'fishbowl' glasses), but as I started using one with some regularity, it actually became one of my favorites to drink from. I really like stems, and they have a nice long one, and that top angle fits nicely on the lip, which I find makes it easier to sip, rather than gulp.

But that harsh, angular, severe shape is ugly.

 

What's their stated reason?

 

Such strong feelings for Teku glasses! Who knew it was such polarizing glassware.

Kind of reminds me of the thread about flights/taster trays at breweries -- a subject that I initially thought was benign but garnered some pretty passionate responses on both sides.

I can say I'm fairly clumsy and have only broken 2, and both times were my fault from handling them too roughly in the sink. I've spilled from them a few times from clumsily knocking over my glass, but I'm not sure it wouldn't have happened with any other glass as I've spilled plenty of pint glasses as well.

And after reading on here how vehemently some oppose using a dish washer I'm surprised by all those who are worry of it breaking in the wash. I thought we were all supposed to be hand-washing anyway!

 

If you thought people were passionate about these two topics, you should visit the threads that discuss bottle size. I am firmly on the side of smaller is better, but I recalled many people basically saying, "Stop being a wuss and just drink up yuh P****". In general, 99% of those comments weren't intended to be offensive or attack anyone, but it is clear that they were (are?!) very passionate. More or less the same sentiment as those expressed in the flight/taster thread, except mostly without the added argument that "you need more oz of a beer to get a sense for what that beer really is".

 

I have 1, unbranded. I think for typical IPA's under 7.5-8%, my Spiegelau does a better job. But the Teku gets the nod for DIPAs or TIPAs.

 

Uhhhh...I have 21 and counting at the moment (along with other styles) and collect them from breweries that I have visited (or want to visit! Ha!) I love them and use them for everything from westies to hazies to fruited sours to stouts...

I can't think of a good reason why it would batter if glass was broken or whole. How many things break just from getting dumped, anyway?

 

Well, if they hand sort they might not want broken glass. Ours takes glass, plastic, and cans in the same bin, so it's gotta be sorted anyway.

 

Guess that's valid. I guess from a design viewpoint, this policy is probably in place to simply discourage people from throwing broken glass in, which could be a problem if it gets stuck to everything, rather than them saying they throw away all broken glass. I.E. People can't make good decisions, so if you have a big wine bottle that was cracked in half, that would be fine, but people can't sufficiently distinguish that that would be OK, but a completely shattered set of plates would be an absolute nightmare.

 

I'm curious, do you have any particular reason for deciding the Spiegelau glass is better for lower abv and the teku is better for higher abv? Any IPA that I pour in a glass goes into the Spiegelau for me

 

Our of curiosity, how does everyone pronounce Spiegelau?

I could look up the correct pronunciation, but for whatever reason I always just say "spee-eh-glue" in my head.

 

I never really looked into the correct pronunciation either, but I say "spee-glow". Definitely an oversimplification but oh well

 

I say it speeg-lau. I say it with a hard 'g' but since the word looks like it could be French in its origin, maybe it's a soft 'g'. But I'm probably way off anyhow.
