The person leading their marketing team came from Lord Hobo, so i beg to differ. Also, the BA framinghammer label says baltic porter, it would make zero sense for the adjuncted beer to be different considering they fill all of the barrels with the same beer.

There is a legal aspect to the labelling based on the ingredients, with those that have ingredients not allowed in beer labeled as a malt beverage. But yes, I would think that this one should be either malt beverage or baltic porter, not ale

I think they need to look into it. Maybe a black pilsner, if that's a thing - add some carafa or midnight wheat in there to darken it up. Roasted or chocolate malk wouldn't work - you don't want that burnt / coffee flavor in that style - but somehting that gives color without much flavor.

Well that and the most basic 101 branding aspect of Jack's Abby is that they're an all lager brewery.

When we submitted the label for approval to the TTB it was initially denied and sent back with the request to add ale to the description. As we did not have time to go through an appeal, my brothers and I made the decision to use the TTB's requested language.

So why was baltic porter ok on BA framinghammer? Doesn't seem to make much sense. Why not use this to address the absurdity of label approvals then, if branding as an all lager brewery is important, why not mention this? Seems weird to just have the label hit the market without addressing it first considering how much emphasis is placed on the brewery being all lager. This could've been an excellent marketing opportunity to show how government incompetence can impact the branding of a small business. Also, any idea why this was an issue this year and not any other year?

It's probably not in the best interests of a craft brewery to try to publicly call out a massive government agency that they constantly need to deal with and have absolutely no leverage to create change with.

You mean like when Dogfish Head made Golden Showers and got all kinds of free marketing? There is a history of breweries challenging the TTB and the label issue as a whole, im not suggesting anything novel or crazy.

Yeah not like Jack's Abby has never done anything similar before on the local level.....Have you tried their latest limited release, Red Tape Lager?

What you’re holding is a very special collaboration beer with our friend’s at Julios Liquors. We start with a selection of barrel aged beers and then blend them in barrels that were hand selected by Ryan Maloney and the Loch & Key Society. This is truly, a one of a kind lager.

picked one up at Julios yesterday. Will enjoy on thanksgiving.

I really wish the specialty beers had wider distribution. I can find their core beers at my local beer retailers but I have yet to see any of the specialty beers (so far).

    Cheers!

use their beer finder, should be able to tell which accounts get core/seasonal, and which get specialty

Funny you should 'say' that. I did indeed check out the Jack's Abby beer finder right after I made my post. I can obtain core beers at my local beer retailer(s) but the specialty beers are a different matter.

My guess is that specialty beers are 'reserved' for Massachusetts distribution only?

    Cheers!
