As of yesterday evening, Binny's in Schaumburg has all three Intrinsic Duality beers on the shelf with no limits. I grabbed a can of Intrinsic Duality #2 because a BW aged 36 months in Weller barrels is worth the $9 a can admission price for 16oz. And also because I too hate lactose in all stouts.

The lactose in this is really not all that noticeable - its not like its some diabeetus pastry stout ...

The problem for me is I am lactose intolerant that causes the biggest problem. Not so much the flavor of lactose.

Yeah, that sucks. Compared to most breweries these days, PW’s use of lactose is minimal. Only adds a touch of sweetness, it’s more for body. But yeah, if you’re intolerant, it doesn’t matter. At least we have confirmation that Abductions will be coming in cans!

Are we talking BA Abductions? Hope so. Really would like to see BA End of Days make a return as well

I am really jonesing for my replacement of the BA Coconut Jones Dog, as that was the last BA release I picked up and one where my first bottle was gold (top 3 Ba coconut stout ever) and two months later the second bottle was… “unintended flavors.”

Please please get that one (or something like it if you are changing the old names) in the rotation @NOTpipeworks ???

Cryo Mosaic is still one of the best beers I've had in the last 2 years. Bring it back please.

Intrinsic Duality #1 out of the fridge, and climbing to room temperature. I have carefully prepared my tastebuds by only consuming neutral item leading to this tasting: BCS blantons, BCS 150, BCS 150 mixed with double barrel, Hop butcher thematic glow, and a handful of za’atar.

Popped a can of Intrinsic Duality #1 tonight...this is a boozy, robust and ultimately rewarding beer. Almost like a Russian Imperial stout in it's harshness and the booze and oak aren't retiring wallflowers, but the lactose / vanilla evens it out enough to be enjoyable.

Not for the faint of heart, but I think it's worth your time. Unless, of course, you are allergic to lactose. Sorry @4DAloveofSTOUT

poured mine into an old Mikerphone smells like a cancelled beer fest glass. Yo La Tengo‘s Sugarcube segueing nicely into Red House Painters’ River.

much, much more muted than #2. But maybe because these notes register much lower to me; not bright. Wet (unspiced) wood and some Werther’s originals in the background… slowly resolving into a vanilla creme. As it warms more… chocolate covered cherry cordial?

I like @GuyFawkes take on the taste - definitely presents big wood and whiskey tones. My first couples of tastes, I was disappointed - the flavors all blurred together, and I got a weird pseudo-oxidized note. For the record, I thought phantom unicorn was the most harsh BA beer from pipeworks I’ve ever had.

Now, that oxi note has vanished, and I get hit with a wall of sound that then gets broken down into cocoa, then vanilla, and then a little sweetness. I’m skeptical of pastry stouts (don’t tell @croush ), and I find flavors are frequently tossed in with a seeming shrug, like cooking and not tasting it as you go; OR, tossed in via wheelbarrow, to take a flavor to its limit. This is not that - it feels like everything that was added was added sparingly until it pulled a particular note out of the beer or the barrel and cast it in a different light.

Still, this isn’t the evolving Christmas fever dream of #2, and I probably blame the lactose for that.

I get… insufficiently baked Ghirardelli’s dark chocolate brownie, slightly stale vanilla-creme-filled Easter bunny chocolates, a bite of Cadbury chocolate 37 seconds after drinking two fingers of rebel yell 10 with one small ice cube melted in it, fleetingly faint and quixotically ephemeral ghost of za’atar, echoes of raiding the bakery pantry at the age of 7 and pouring vanilla extract and Hershey’s syrup together, and reminiscent of eating a homemade (ahem) brownie while taking a pull from a whiskey bottle naked on a moonless night next to a lake while you hear an attractive voice giggle alluringly somewhere nearby. Yeah, it tastes like when the years and the rough edges are showing but you still got swagger and a youthful smile.

    Cheers, fellow advocates

#3 on deck for tonight, post Illumination at the Morton arboretum.

annoyed I missed the hype around citra cryo - picked up double blazed Orange instead, and think I would have enjoyed the cryo more.

sometimes the PW branding is overwhelming to me. Like… drive-thru meatballs was awesome, but boy did I feel confused picking that up.
