I’ve recently noticed that there has been an uptake in the popularity of heavy AAL beers, like Coors Banquet and Bud Heavy. I especially noticed that more people in my social circle have expressed a preference for the heavy variants of American lagers, while popular TV shows like Yellowstone feature significant product placement of beers like Bud heavy in the first season, and significantly Coors Banquet in the subsequent seasons (even coining the term “Yellow-Jacket” for a can of Banquet which two wranglers order at a bar), rather than their light counterparts. This surprised me considering how Bud Light has unseated Budweiser as America’s top beer over the recent few years.

Are we experiencing a revival in the heavy AAL? Has the craft beer scene driven even the common beer drinker to seek a more flavorful alternative to light beers?

Was never a fan of light beers to begin with. Gimme a heavy any time.

Could the embrace of lager by "craft" (hate the term) breweries be spurring renewed interest in Bud Heavy and the like? It's a good thing that two segments of the beer industry can compliment each other imho.

When I was a student at Utah State in the far north of that fair state, the players would drive across the Idaho border to some tiny town where they could get "high point" industrial beer instead of the "three-two" sold in the Utah supermarkets.

Personally, I've seen the opposite. Slow decrease of the 'heavies' over the last decade, but especially over the last 6 years or so. I've never really known anyone that drank light, though. It just went from Bud Heavy to...craft. The only people that I have ever met that drink the light versions are (1) people on medication, (2) people with gout, and (3) true alcoholics that drink seemingly 'round-the-clock.

People still drink tons of light beers even here in Oregon. Especially out hunting and camping..judging by what the nasty b++yards leave behind.
Never saw the sense in drinking lite beers even now with diabetes. Just find something that doesn't make my levels go crazy..and often it's not light beers

Sure, the 3 former "regular" flagships are still around, just much diminished.

    1980
    Budweiser #1 w/21.5 % market share
    Miller High Life #2 w/12.3%
    Coors Banquet #4 w/5.5%
    Total 39.3% Market Share

    2018
Budweiser #4 w/5.5% market share (since dropped to #5)
    Miller High Life #13 w/1.7%
    Coors Banquet #22 w/0.8%
    Total 8% Market Share

Feel like most people who were into the “lights” have given up beer all together in favor of seltzers

Unrelated to product placement, I personally am never really a picky person I can find something I like about anything. For me the AAL taste good, are clean, cold and very convenient because I live in eastern camden county where finding anything special beer related is not easy to begin with but I don’t mind because I’ll take a $7 six pack over a $15 four pack any day.

also I’ve been into a lot of bud heavy ( I like what rice does to beer) and yesterday I’ve discovered that I like PBR way more than bud heavy. I’ve been spouting last few years about how Budweiser is actually a great beer for what it’s worth but no in comparison to PBR. This is BA I’m sure everyone has had both beers but side by side PBR is straight up better than bud heavy (also better than genessee cream ale too which I like a lot too) in terms of flavor, carbonation, texture.

realistically besides Guinness it’s been 9 out of ten lagers around here choice wise. There’s things like benediktiner and okocim in the mix but a lot of bud heavy, modelo and PBR

Yep. Was gonna say my head hurts just thinking about it. Just like my college weekends.

FWIW -- I may have to bring back my old mantra: "Life's too short to drink bad beer."

I’m almost 30 and had too many Budweiser last nigh coincidentally. Headache most definitely but what’s worse is the stomach. Feel bad for the restroom

    With friends like that...

But my real question was, why? As in, why continue when you know the results will be awful?
