Been really enjoying some better beer lately. Not top shelf but better than the adjuncts I typically purchase. I am in a season of not wanting to spend a lot however. Can you list me some of the better cheaper beers I should look for? I am in driving distance to Walmart. Lol. I know. In a bit of a good beer bind, but really, I just like cold beer. But am quite sick of bud etc. help.

    Thanks friends!

@wadamslll, it would be helpful to know where you live to provide examples of economical lagers that are likely available in your area.

I am a fan of Victory Classic Lager which is all malt. I can purchase a 15-pack of this beer for 20 bucks.

    Cheers!

Bells “Lager of the Lakes”, as long as your not on the west coast, it should be at Walmart. Founders “All Day Vacay” is still everywhere around me, I’m not sure if you can find it local to you. If you want to dip your toes into economical IPA’s, Bells “Lighthearted Ale” is a pretty low cost and low ABV, easy drinking option. And of course, right along those lines as well would be Founders “All Day IPA”.

    Cheers and good luck.

I think we need a better idea of what you like in a beer. If you've only really consumed Bud Light over the years, even a step up in brands might give you palate shock. But some of the newer American lagers may just make you think you're buying expensive Bud Light.

Like @JackHorzempa pointed out, it would help a lot to know roughly where you live so we can give you options that are actually distributed to your area.

Personally I would look to the import section and get yourself something like Bitburger Pilsner, Radeberger Pilsner, or Pilsner Urquell (my local Walmart carries a 12-pack of bottles for $15 + tax).

If you have some other options than Walmart close by you might look for something like Paulaner or Hofbrau. Also, if you have an Aldi nearby, and they carry beer, see if they get Wernesgrüner Pilsner.

Oh hey, @wadamslll are you close to Tucson? There are Trader Joe’s there and they appear to carry beer. The Josephbrau lineup are cheap and pretty solid lagers.

Lagers can be all over the board (something that is oft misunderstood); from soft, malty Helles to hoppy, crisp Pilsners, to strong, heavy Doppelbocks.

I could highly recommend Trumer Pils, but the hop bitterness might scare you off other suggestions.

I second this. Only had it once in a box I got from you actually. Really good stuff. Cheers, Mike.

Paulaner Pils and Oktoberfestbier (festbier). 4 pack 16.9oz cans and 6 pack 11.2oz bottles for $7.99. Founders Solid Gold, not sure if they are distro'd in AZ though.

Unfortunately, the Josephsbrau line is shrinking -- and 1/3 is a Hefeweizen.

While I love that beer as well, it drinks more like an IPA than a "lager". My favorite lagers are from east coast lager breweries like Van Trapp and East Rock in CT, so not much help for someone in AZ. So my official answer will be Bitburger.

That stinks. Do they still do the seasonal ones?

edit: of course they do because you had the winter lager one - right?

Hamm’s. Should be around $15 a thirty pack. Yes, a thirty pack. As @DavetotheB likes to say - Hamm's: the beer that tastes like beer.

A gift to me this very Christmas

Yeah, the Winter seasonal hits shelves, and maybe the Spring? Can't be positive on that -- and it seems every TJ's has a little different stock.

Didn't see Oktoberfest this year, but since they've changed the labels on the Winter beer, maybe they did so on the Okto and I just missed it.

If there is an Aldi store close by - get some of the 4 pk pint cans of the Wernergruner pils - very solid German pils at a great price.....some of their other beers are not bad and priced well also....
Other than that - any of the large format paks as others have suggested, are usually good and cheap options for the budget conscious.....hard to beat 6 pk pounder cans of PBR here for like $5.99 also....cheers!
