Nearly a decade ago, it became clear that this forum could use an "I'm visiting Portland, where should I go?" thread. While that may not be the case as much these days, it can't hurt to have a catch-all thread. This OP will probably not as robust of a resource as it used to be, but it's a start. There are obviously tons of other great beer options in Portland that are not included in this OP, so this can be a spot for that discussion as well.

Some of the more well-regarded Portland breweries & brew pubs you might consider visiting:
    Baerlic Brewing
    Breakside Brewery
    Cascade Brewing Barrel House
    Great Notion Brewing
    Ex Novo Brewing
    Hair of the Dog Brewing
    Little Beast Brewing
    Ruse Brewing
    Upright Brewing
    Wayfinder Beer

Some highly recommended beer bars & bottle shops:
    APEX
    The Beermongers
    Belmont Station
    Bridgetown Beerhouse
    Horse Brass Pub
    Imperial Bottle Shop
    John's Marketplace
    Loyal Legion
    Roscoe's
    Saraveza

    ---------------------------------------------------
    (A Few) Beer-centric Restaurants*
    Grain & Gristle
    Higgins Restaurant
    Interurban
    Lardo
    Ranch Southeast
    Stammtisch
    White Owl Social Club

    * Just about any decent restaurant in PDX has a good/very good beer list. This might be the most debatable section of this thread. Eater PDX is a great food resource.
    ----------------------------------------------------

Need shippers for all the beer you bought?
    Portland Wine Storage
Rose City Wine Vaults & Storage

    Portland Airport
PDX is a great bar that just happens to be an airport. If you have time to kill, there is a Deschutes Brewpub (concourse D), a Hopworks brewpub (concourse E), a Henry's Tavern outpost, and several other restaurants with good tap lists. Deschutes, Hopworks, Henry's, and Country Cat are all past security and all fill growlers, so you can get a fill and carry it on. There are also Made in Oregon stores and a Timberline Lodge gift store past security with good bottle selections.

** Disclaimer: This post is not intended to be a catch-all for Portland beer establishments. There are literally hundreds of well-regarded beer institutions throughout the greater Portland area -- many of which are not listed in this post.

I'd link to all the old threads like I used to, but there's just too much outdated info in those to even bother now. If you're interested in the old (and much more in-depth) thread, search "Visiting Portland."

Thanks for putting this together again.

Just one question though... Too early to add Chuckanut to the list?

Are you excluding Chuckanut because they're a Washington-based brewery, and including ForeLand because they brew in Oregon?

I vote Chuckanut, ForeLand and Steeplejack to be included. I guess I agreed with a double-negative ha

Hey gang, I'm moving to Portland this month! This has been a help, since there's a lot of beer opinions as to where to go, but information can become out of date real quickly!

I've created a map of all the names mentioned in this thread: https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/edit?mid=17yrW8tVaXinh-W6p3fciqi5Na2NiBxQ7&usp=sharing

Let me know if anything is wrong; for places with multiple destinations, I included the one with the most ratings. Looks like I'll ultimately be living between Gresham and Portland (somewhere around Wilkes East, Centennial, Hazelwood... in that rough triangle)... if anyone has any favorite bottle shops or bars in that area, that would be a big help!

    Welcome to Portland!

Although they aren't on the list above, there are a few breweries in outer-Portland. You're likely to be close to Von Ebert (the Glendoveer location), Level Beer and Migration. Breakside is building a new location which is a little further out but will still probably be closer to you than their NE location. The only bottle shop out there in Gresham I know of is called Cheap Charlies. They have a solid selection and you can find things there long after they've disappeared from shelves in Portland.

I think Von Ebert used to be on the list to visit, but maybe I'm remembering wrong. Also, I'd give a +1 to Chuckanut (their Baltic Porter was fantastic) and a -1 to Steeplejack who chose a nice (if loud) location, but I don't feel have the beer to match it yet.

No, not at all! They certainly deserve mention, as do several others that aren't listed in the OP. I could have easily included (IMO) Chuckanut, Modern Times, Away Days, Zoiglhaus, Oakshire, etc., etc.

I honestly debated even creating the new post, just because the beer landscape in Portland has changed so much in the last 2 years, who really knows what the consensus is anymore? But since I did do it, I figured the whole thing needed something of a reset, and it would probably be best, at least for now, to stick with the places that are well-established and have some (I think) general consensus. Listing 10 of those well-established, well-regarded breweries seemed like a nice round number to start with. I realize not even those will be agreed upon, but I figured I'd at least get the conversation started.

Maybe a fourth grouping of "breweries of note from out of town with spots here"? Modern Times, ForeLand, Chuckanut, Deschutes, Backwoods, Double Mountain, Oakshire...I'm probably missing some.

I'm a wee bit surprised that Pfriem hasn't opened a PDX tasting room by now.

Following up on this, I wanted to point out that my recommendation to search "Visiting Portland" for the old threads doesn't work. I guess they limit how far back you can go?

But if anyone's interested, here's the last thread I made: https://www.beeradvocate.com/community/threads/visiting-portland-fall-winter-2018-19-update.593180/
That thread also links to all the prior threads (going back to 2013) if anyone wants to take a trip down memory lane. There are also some not-outdated resources in those threads that people may find useful, as I pared this one down quite a bit & got rid of a lot of bloat.

Interesting (and sad, in many cases) to see how the Portland beer landscape has changed since late 2018. I don't know if I'll ever get over Bailey's closing. RIP.

Brewery/beer bar hopping is how I learned my way around Portland when I moved out here almost 12(!) years ago. It's also probably the most fun way to do it.

If you end up living in/around the Hazelwood area, you'll be close(ish) to a lot of good stuff... Roscoe's, Threshold Brewing & Blending, Zoiglhaus, and Motavilla Brew Works, to name a few. I also hear the new(ish) CORE food cart pod is really good, but I haven't been there yet to independently verify. Breakside still has their restored, tap-outfitted Winnebago, The Breaksider, parked there as well.

    Have fun!

Von Ebert really needs to be added to this list considering how many "Best Of's" it's been on, it produces probably the most decorated IPA in the country, and how good they are across all beer styles. Also they have a bunch of locations so it's fairly easy to visit.

No criticism of @guajolote intended, but it should tell you something about Portland that a brewery wins Gold in American IPA at GABF (among much other acclaim) and the local beer guide on BA is still wait-and-see.

Latest episode of the podcast The Brewery Travels highlights PDX with some impressive guests: Jeff Alworth (Beervana / The Beer Bible) and Lisa Morrison (Co-owner of Belmont Station). Amongst other things, they discuss outside beer fans visiting Portland. Good listen.
