I just received an e-mal from a local beer retailer and there is a new beer available from Dogfish Head: Where the Wild Hops Are IPA.

    From the Dogfish Head website:

    ‘Where the Wild Hops Are

An unfiltered, rustic and wild IPA

Celebrating the magic at the intersection of art and ales, our annual Off-Centered Art Series is a chance for our brewers to take a walk on the wild side and with our latest innovation, that’s precisely what they did with ‘Where the Wild Hops Are!’

This unfiltered, rustic IPA is brewed with four wild-derived hop varieties that include Zappa, Amarillo, Comet and Sabro. It’s then blended with a touch of barrel-aged wild ale that’s been aged for four years in French Oak barrels.

The result is a complex blend of citrus meets dank, that’s rounded out by a touch of wild. With each sip, you’ll be greeted by dry, oak-tinged finish.

    Specs

    ABV: 6.5

    IBU: 45

    Style: India Pale Ale

    Experience

Color: Hazy pale gold with a white head

Aroma: Blend of citrus, dank tropical fruit, peach, oak

Flavor: Complex, juicy fruit, slight tart

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a dry, oak-tinged finish”

Well, this does read to be an intriguing beer.

I had it the other day. It was interesting and pretty damn good. I know sour IPA is a thing, but I noted that it felt like much more of a blend of styles rather than the sometimes clashing flavors of sour IPA. Lots of nice white wine funk working with the hops. I recommend picking some up

    In the Dogfish Head description:

"Flavor: Complex, juicy fruit, slight tart"

Do you concur with "slight tart"?

    Cheers!

Good to see dogfish head still doing dogfish headish type things.

I’d smile if HarperCollins threatened with legal action.

I had it last weekend. Just bought a single. I thought it was very solid and had just a bit of funk with the hops. I may get a full six pack.

I really want to try this one.
The hop combo sounds good, even though I'm not a huge fan of Sabro; Amarillo and Comet are solid.
The addition of that French Oak wild ale sounds awesome too.

Has one last night and it’s fantastic. It’s a good IPA and the wild ale blend is spot on with its balance. Highly recommend everyone try it.

I wish DFH would release more things like this and not bother chasing the hazy ipa craze.

This is a new beer I can embrace just based on the description. I’m going out to look for a 6 pack today before playoff games start. And agree, making beers like this is at the core of what DFH is about and more focus on experimentation in brewing (without tossing in fruit or adjuncts into everything). Marketing terms like “rustic” is the new “artisanal” to get away with charging a 10-20% (or more) markup, so I always am a little skeptical until my taste buts prove it’s legit and worthy.

Back home ready for football. It’s a good beer. Was about $3 more per Sixer than 60 or 90 min. Here’s my review

“Nice hazy look with frothy head. Aroma is hoppy but also kinda like a Brut IPA. I hate to use the term but it’s very “complex”. Notice some of the grain, but then some subtle orange flavor, some bittering hop, and touch of Brut dryness as well. Nothing sour/nothing funky really. It’s a like beer and light in body. It’s very drinkable”

Would you buy a second six-pack of this beer?

No, but that isn’t to disrespect the beer, just because I cycle through so many beers and like variety. If they release it a year from now? Maybe 50/50 I repeat buy it.

. Yep, I like both Cincy and Titans so I’m just enjoying the game and good beer (now having a New Albion Ale…see my new posting).
